1. Understanding the Case Study Requirements |

Before touching a calculator, read the case narrative twice. Highlight the business sector (manufacturing, retail, service), the time periods involved, and the precise deliverables requested—whether it is evaluating profitability, assessing liquidity, or advising on an investment decision. CIE case studies often embed subtle clues in the text, such as a mention of “increased competition” or “new regulations”, which should shape your final commentary.

Create a quick reference sheet as you read: list the key figures (revenue, cost of sales, operating profit, total assets, current liabilities, etc.) and note any unusual items. This saves time and prevents you from repeatedly scanning the original data. Remember, marks are awarded for application, not for regurgitating formulas—always link your calculations back to the case context.

2. Key Accounting Concepts Revision |

Case study answers must be underpinned by core accounting concepts. The accruals (matching) concept requires that expenses be matched with the revenues they generate, which is crucial when adjusting for prepayments and accruals in provided trial balances. The prudence concept demands that profits are not anticipated but losses are recognised as soon as they are foreseen—explain how this might affect inventory valuation or provisions for doubtful debts in the scenario.

Consistency ensures that the same accounting methods are applied year-on-year; if the case shows a change in depreciation method, you must discuss whether it is justified and disclose its impact. Materiality and going concern also feature regularly: ask yourself whether an item is large enough to influence stakeholders’ decisions, and whether the business appears capable of continuing operations for the foreseeable future.

3. Ratio Analysis: Profitability |

Profitability ratios reveal how effectively a company converts revenue into profit. Using the following income statement extract for Vista Ltd, we can calculate and interpret the key margins.

Item 2024 ($’000) 2023 ($’000)
Revenue 800 700
Cost of Sales (500) (420)
Gross Profit 300 280
Operating Expenses (150) (140)
Operating Profit 150 140

The gross profit margin is calculated as (Gross Profit ÷ Revenue) × 100. For 2024, this yields (300 ÷ 800) × 100 = 37.5%, compared to (280 ÷ 700) × 100 = 40.0% in 2023. The decline of 2.5 percentage points may signal a rise in input costs that could not be fully passed on to customers, or a deliberate price-cutting strategy to gain market share—contextual clues in the case will confirm which.

Gross Profit Margin = (GP ÷ Revenue) × 100

The net profit margin after operating expenses is 18.75% in 2024 vs 20.0% in 2023. Although absolute profit rose, the shrinking margin deserves comment: operating expenses grew by 7.1% while revenue grew by 14.3%, suggesting that the expense increase was proportionate, yet the gross margin squeeze dragged down the bottom line.

4. Ratio Analysis: Liquidity & Efficiency |

Liquidity ratios assess the firm’s ability to meet short-term obligations. Using Vista Ltd’s balance sheet snippets (Current assets: $200k; Inventory: $80k; Current liabilities: $120k), the current ratio = 200 ÷ 120 = 1.67:1, and the quick ratio = (200 – 80) ÷ 120 = 1.0:1. Both appear healthy, but trends matter—compare with prior year figures provided in the case.

Current Ratio = Current Assets ÷ Current Liabilities

Quick Ratio = (Current Assets – Inventory) ÷ Current Liabilities

Efficiency ratios show how well resources are managed. Inventory turnover (Cost of Sales ÷ Average Inventory) might be 500 ÷ 80 = 6.25 times, meaning stock is held roughly 58 days (365 ÷ 6.25). If the industry norm is 45 days, this signals overstocking. Similarly, trade receivables turnover (Credit Sales ÷ Average Receivables) and payables turnover shed light on working capital management—always benchmark against sector data provided in the scenario.

5. Cash Flow Statement Insights |

A case study may provide a statement of cash flows or ask you to comment on the liquidity picture from the balance sheet. Focus on the operating cash flow: compare it with operating profit. If profit is $150k but net cash from operations is only $90k, the difference could be due to a large increase in receivables or inventory—signalling aggressive credit sales or slow-moving stock. Such insight cannot be captured by the income statement alone.

When analysing cash flows, also examine investing and financing activities: heavy capital expenditure might indicate expansion, while a new long-term loan could increase financial risk. Calculate the cash-based interest cover (cash from operations + interest paid) ÷ interest paid to assess debt-servicing ability from a cash perspective.

6. Budgeting & Variance Analysis |

Management accounting cases frequently require variance calculation and interpretation. Below is a flexed budget extract for a single product.

Item Budget Actual Variance
Units sold 10,000 11,000 1,000 F
Revenue ($) 200,000 214,500 14,500 F
Direct materials ($) 50,000 55,000 5,000 A
Direct labour ($) 30,000 33,000 3,000 A

The total sales variance is favourable at $14,500, but this masks mixed performance. Since actual volume was higher, we must flex the budget to isolate price and efficiency effects. The sales price variance = (Actual selling price – Standard selling price) × Actual quantity. If the standard price was $20 per unit and actual was $19.50, the price variance is (19.50 – 20) × 11,000 = $5,500 Adverse. The volume variance (favourable) more than compensated, resulting in a net positive sales variance.

For materials and labour, calculate usage and rate variances. An adverse material variance of $5,000 might be split into a price variance (actual price per kg vs standard) and an efficiency variance (actual kg used vs standard for actual output). Always suggest plausible operational reasons: cheaper raw materials causing higher wastage, or unplanned overtime increasing labour rates.

Short-term decision cases often require marginal costing logic. Suppose Vista Ltd expects variable costs of $12 per unit, fixed costs of $60,000, and a selling price of $20. The break-even point in units is Fixed Costs ÷ (Selling price – Variable cost) = 60,000 ÷ (20 – 12) = 7,500 units.

Break-even (units) = Fixed Costs ÷ Contribution per unit

If the business receives a special order for 2,000 units at $15 each, incremental analysis shows: incremental revenue $30,000, incremental variable cost $24,000, hence additional contribution of $6,000. Since fixed costs are unchanged, the order is acceptable on financial grounds, provided it does not disrupt regular sales or set a lower price expectation in the market—a point that should be discussed in your case evaluation.
