1. Enterprise and Business Activity |

Business activity exists to satisfy needs and wants by producing goods and services. It involves adding value, which is the difference between the selling price and the cost of bought-in materials.

The four factors of production are land (natural resources), labour (workforce), capital (man-made aids) and enterprise (risk-taking ability). Entrepreneurs combine these factors to create a business idea, bearing the risk of failure in return for the reward of profit.

Opportunity cost is the next best alternative forgone when a choice is made. Specialisation occurs when individuals, firms or regions concentrate on a narrow range of tasks, boosting efficiency but increasing interdependence.

A business plan is a written document describing objectives, market research, finance needs and projected cash flow. It helps secure loans and guides the startup phase.

2. Business Structure and Forms |

Sole traders have one owner who receives all profits but carries unlimited liability. This means personal assets are at risk if the business fails. The form is easy to set up and offers full control.

Partnerships involve 2-20 partners sharing capital, profits and workload. A deed of partnership outlines terms. Partners also face unlimited liability, though in a limited partnership some partners can limit their liability to their investment.

Private limited companies (Ltd) are separate legal entities offering limited liability. Shares cannot be sold to the public and often require board approval for transfer. Public limited companies (PLC) can sell shares on a stock exchange, raising large capital but facing stricter disclosure rules and a higher risk of takeover.

Franchising, joint ventures and public corporations are other forms. Franchising offers a proven brand in exchange for fees, joint ventures pool resources for a shared project, and public corporations are state-owned entities often focusing on public services.

Share trading 股份交易 Not on stock exchange 不在证券交易所 Listed on stock exchange 在证券交易所上市

3. Size of Business and Growth |

Business size can be measured by number of employees, revenue, capital employed, market share or value of output. Each measure has limitations; for example, a capital-intensive firm may have few employees but high output.

Growth can be internal (organic) or external (integration). Internal growth involves expanding sales through new products, new markets or increased capacity, often slower but less risky. External growth occurs through mergers or takeovers.

Integration types include horizontal (same industry, same stage), vertical forward (towards customers) and vertical backward (towards suppliers). Conglomerate integration links unrelated businesses. Mergers can create synergies, economies of scale and diversification, but may also face culture clashes and regulatory hurdles.

Some businesses remain small because of owner preferences, market size constraints, high costs of expansion or niche positioning. Small firms often survive by offering personalised services or flexible production.

4. Business Objectives and Stakeholders |

Common business objectives include profit maximisation, growth, survival, increasing market share and providing a social or community service. Objectives should be SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound.

Mission statements set out the overall purpose and values of the business, while corporate objectives translate that mission into strategic targets. Departments then set functional objectives to support corporate aims.

Stakeholders are individuals or groups with an interest in the business. Internal stakeholders include owners, managers and employees. External stakeholders include customers, suppliers, government, banks and the local community. Different stakeholder objectives can conflict; for example, employees want higher wages, which may reduce short-term profit.

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) means businesses accept obligations to society beyond legal requirements. Acting socially responsibly can enhance reputation and long-term profitability but may increase costs in the short run.

5. Marketing Management |

The marketing mix (4Ps) consists of Product, Price, Place and Promotion. An effective mix meets customer needs while achieving business goals. A product-oriented business focuses on creating high-quality products and then finding buyers; a market-oriented business first researches customer needs and then designs products accordingly.

Market segmentation divides a market into distinct groups of consumers with similar characteristics, allowing targeted marketing. Segments can be based on demographic, geographic, psychographic or behavioural factors.

Pricing strategies include cost-plus pricing, competitive pricing, penetration pricing, price skimming and psychological pricing. Price elasticity of demand measures how responsive quantity demanded is to a change in price. Elastic demand (PED > 1) means revenue rises when price falls.

Promotion includes advertising, sales promotions, public relations and direct selling. In integrated marketing communications, all promotional tools convey a consistent message. Digital promotion and social media have grown vital in reaching younger audiences.

Place refers to distribution channels. Producers may sell directly to consumers or use intermediaries such as retailers, wholesalers and agents. E-commerce has shortened many distribution chains.

6. Operations and Productivity |

Operations management controls the production of goods and services. Decisions include location, scale of production, methods (job, batch, flow, mass customisation) and stock management.

Productivity measures output per unit of input (labour or capital). Higher productivity reduces unit costs. Ways to raise productivity include training, new technology, improved motivation and lean production techniques like just-in-time (JIT).

Lean production aims to eliminate waste and reduce lead times. Kaizen (continuous improvement) involves workers in suggesting small, ongoing improvements. JIT systems keep stock levels near zero, saving storage costs but requiring reliable suppliers.

Economies of scale are cost advantages as output increases. They include purchasing, technical, financial and marketing economies. Diseconomies of scale occur when firms grow too large, leading to communication breakdowns and coordination problems.

Quality management can be approached through quality control (inspection at the end) and quality assurance (building quality into every stage). Total quality management (TQM) embeds a culture of continuous improvement and ‘right first time’ philosophy.

7. Financial Fundamentals and Break-even Analysis |

Businesses must manage financial resources effectively. Start-up capital and working capital are needed to cover initial costs and day-to-day operations. Sources of finance include retained profits, share capital, bank loans, overdrafts, trade credit, leasing and government grants. Choosing between internal and external finance depends on cost, flexibility and ownership dilution.

Revenue is the income from selling goods or services. Total costs comprise fixed costs (e.g. rent) and variable costs (e.g. raw materials). Profit = Total revenue − Total costs.

Break-even analysis identifies the output level where total revenue equals total costs. Break-even point (units) = Fixed costs / Contribution per unit. Contribution per unit = Selling price − Variable cost per unit.

Break-even quantity = Fixed costs ÷ (Selling price − Variable cost per unit)

Managers use break-even charts to assess target profits and the margin of safety (actual output minus break-even output). This tool helps in making pricing, cost and output decisions but assumes costs and revenues are linear, which may not hold in reality.

Profitability ratios, such as gross profit margin (Gross profit ÷ Revenue × 100) and net profit margin, measure how efficiently a business converts sales into profit.

8. Cash Flow and Working Capital |

Cash flow is the movement of cash into and out of a business. A cash flow forecast predicts future cash inflows and outflows over a period, highlighting potential shortfalls. It differs from profit because profit includes non-cash items like depreciation and credit sales that have not yet been collected.

The cash flow statement records actual cash flows. Negative cash flow can occur even when a firm is profitable if customers delay payments or inventory builds up. Working capital is current assets minus current liabilities, essential for day-to-day solvency.

Ways to improve cash flow include reducing inventory levels, speeding up collection of receivables, extending payables without harming supplier relations, leasing instead of buying assets, and arranging overdraft facilities. A business that runs out of cash may fail, even if profitable.

Cash flow problems are more common in fast-growing businesses because they tie up cash in inventory and give credit to customers before settling own bills.

9. Human Resource Management Basics |

Human resource management involves recruiting, training, motivating and rewarding employees. Effective HRM aims to align the workforce with business objectives and build a productive culture.

Recruitment can be internal (promoting existing staff) or external (advertising outside). A detailed job description and person specification help attract suitable candidates. The selection process may include interviews, tests and assessment centres, with an emphasis on reducing bias.

On-the-job training happens while working; off-the-job training takes place away from the workplace. Training improves skills, confidence and adaptability, benefiting both the employee and the employer, but involves costs and possible downtime.

Employee remuneration includes time-rate pay, piece-rate pay, salary, commission, profit sharing, bonuses and fringe benefits. Non-financial motivators such as job enrichment, empowerment and recognition are highlighted by theories of motivation, including Maslow’s hierarchy and Herzberg’s two-factor theory.

Labour productivity and absenteeism are key HR performance indicators. High labour turnover might signal dissatisfaction or poor management, increasing recruitment and training costs.

10. External Influences on Business Activity |

Businesses operate within a dynamic external environment. PEST analysis examines Political, Economic, Social and Technological factors. Political factors include taxation, regulation and government stability. Economic factors encompass interest rates, exchange rates and the business cycle.

Social changes such as demographic shifts, health awareness and lifestyle trends create new market opportunities and threats. Ethical considerations pressure firms to adopt fair trade, sustainable sourcing and transparent marketing.

Technological change affects production methods, communication and product development. E-commerce, automation and data analytics transform business models and competitive landscapes.

Businesses face legal controls on employment, consumer protection, health and safety, and competition. Multinational companies must also consider trade barriers, tariffs and differing legal systems.

Environmental pressures and sustainability targets push firms towards reducing carbon footprints and waste. Many businesses now publish sustainability reports, responding to stakeholder expectations.

Globalisation opens markets but increases competition. Exchange rate fluctuations affect import costs and export competitiveness. A weak home currency makes exports cheaper but imports dearer, influencing pricing and sourcing decisions.
