1. Uses and Gratifications Theory |

Core Formula: Media Use = f (Individual Needs, Social Environment, Media Options). Audience members actively select and use media to satisfy specific gratifications.

核心公式:媒体使用 = f(个人需求、社会环境、媒体选择)。

Developed by Blumler and Katz, this theory shifts focus from ‘what media do to people’ to ‘what people do with media’. Audiences are not passive; they seek entertainment, information, personal identity and social interaction. A teenager scrolling TikTok for humour and a professional reading news for information both apply the same active choice mechanism.

2. Encoding/Decoding Model |

Stuart Hall’s Model: Meaning = Producer’s Encoding ↪ Text Encoding ↪ Audience Decoding. Misunderstanding occurs when codes are not shared.

Hall argued that media messages are encoded with intended meanings, but audiences decode them through their own cultural frameworks. The same advertisement can be interpreted differently by diverse audiences based on class, gender or ethnicity. This reveals that meaning is not fixed but negotiated.

3. Agenda-Setting Theory |

Theorem: The press may not be successful in telling people what to think, but it is stunningly successful in telling them what to think about. (Bernard Cohen, 1963)

McCombs and Shaw demonstrated that the salience of issues in the news correlates with the public’s perception of importance. If climate change dominates headlines, audiences rank it as a top concern. This agenda-transfer informs the ‘framing’ effect, where media not only select issues but shape how they are understood.

4. Representation and Stereotypes |

Representation Formula: Reality → Mediation (Selection, Omission, Construction) → Mediated Representation → Audience Perception. Stereotypes are simplified, exaggerated representations that reduce complexity.

Stuart Hall calls representation the process by which meaning is produced through language and signs. Stereotypes often reflect power imbalances, as in the portrayal of ethnic minorities or women. Laura Mulvey’s Male Gaze theory extends this by examining how visual media positions women as passive objects of a heterosexual male viewer.

5. Semiotics: Signifier and Signified |

Saussure’s Principle: Sign = Signifier (form) + Signified (concept). Their relationship is arbitrary and governed by cultural codes.

A red traffic light (signifier) signifies ‘stop’ (signified). In media texts, denotation is the literal meaning, while connotation is the associated meaning. Roland Barthes expanded this with myth: a connotation that becomes so widely accepted it appears natural, like a luxury watch connoting success.

6. Narrative Theories: Todorov’s Equilibrium |

Narrative Formula: Equilibrium → Disruption → Recognition → Attempt to Repair → New Equilibrium. Stories move from stability through conflict to resolution.

Tzvetan Todorov’s model is widely applied to film, news and advertising. A charity advert might show a child suffering (disruption), the charity’s intervention (attempt to repair) and a hopeful outcome (new equilibrium). Propp’s character functions—hero, villain, helper—can be mapped onto narratives but Todorov’s structure underpins temporal flow.

7. Media Effects Models: Hypodermic Needle vs Two-Step Flow |

Hypodermic Needle Model (1930s): Media Message → Direct, Uniform Effect on Passive Audience. This early model assumed the media injects ideas directly into the mind.

Two-Step Flow (Lazarsfeld): Media Message → Opinion Leaders → Their Followers. Influence is mediated by personal relationships.

The hypodermic model, although discredited, remains useful for analysing moral panics over violent video games. The two-step flow highlights that audiences are not atomised but embedded in social networks, prefiguring contemporary influencer marketing.

8. Cultivation Theory and Mean World Syndrome |

Gerbner’s Formula: Heavy TV Viewing → Cultivates Perception of Reality Mirrored from TV Content → Fearful ‘Mean World’ Outlook.

Cultivation theory argues that television cultivates a shared worldview over time. Heavy viewers are more likely to overestimate violence, distrust others and adopt the ‘mean world syndrome’. This is not a direct effect but a gradual, cumulative process of symbolic environment absorption.

9. Reception Theory: Preferred, Negotiated, Oppositional Readings |

Hall’s Reading Positions: Preferred Reading (accepts intended meaning) ↔ Negotiated Reading (accepts partly but adapts) ↔ Oppositional Reading (rejects intended meaning entirely).

Building on encoding/decoding, reception theory maps how real audiences interpret texts. A political broadcast’s preferred reading might support the party; a negotiated reading might agree with some policies but question others; an oppositional reading could frame it as propaganda. This model empowers the audience as active meaning-makers.

10. Genre Theory and Hybridity |

Genre Formula: Repetition of Recognisable Elements (Iconography, Narrative Patterns) + Variation (to maintain interest) = Genre Evolution. Hybridity mixes conventions from different genres.

Genre offers audiences a set of expectations and producers a blueprint. Steve Neale argues that genres are instances of ‘repetition and difference’. A romantic comedy reuses meet-cute conventions but varies characters. Hybrid genres like dramedy or sci-fi horror borrow elements to attract broader audiences. Contemporary media are increasingly characterised by genre fluidity.
