📚 AS Eduqas Psychology: Summer Preview and Bridging Course | AS Eduqas

Welcome to the start of your AS Psychology journey with Eduqas. This summer bridging guide is designed to introduce you to the structure, key themes and essential skills you will need to succeed. Whether you have studied GCSE Psychology or are completely new to the subject, these pages will help you build confidence and hit the ground running in September.

1. Welcome to AS Eduqas Psychology | 欢迎进入 AS Eduqas 心理学

The Eduqas AS Psychology qualification gives you a fascinating insight into why people think, feel and behave the way they do. You will study two units: ‘Psychology: Past to Present’ and ‘Psychology: Investigating Behaviour’. The course blends classic research, contemporary debates and hands-on research methods training, preparing you for both further study and a scientific understanding of everyday life.

One of the strengths of this specification is its emphasis on how psychological knowledge has evolved over time. You will not only learn key findings but also critically engage with how researchers arrived at those conclusions and what counts as evidence. This summer is the perfect time to start training your brain to think like a psychologist.

2. How Is AS Different from GCSE?

If you are moving up from GCSE Psychology, you will notice a step up in both depth and application. At AS level you are expected to describe, explain and evaluate theories and studies, rather than simply recall information. The emphasis shifts towards analysis, interpretation of data and the ability to construct a balanced argument.

If you have not taken GCSE Psychology, do not worry. AS Eduqas has been designed to be accessible to everyone. The summer bridging work suggested here will give you the foundational knowledge you need. The key difference from GCSE in any essay-based subject is the expectation of independent reading and the use of specialist terminology with precision.

From day one, you should keep a glossary of new terms. Words like ‘validity’, ‘reliability’, ‘reductionism’ and ‘determinism’ will become your everyday vocabulary. Embrace the challenge early and your transition will be smooth.

3. Unit 1: Psychology Past to Present – The Five Approaches |

Component 1 of your AS explores five major psychological approaches that have shaped the discipline. These are the Biological, Psychodynamic, Behaviourist, Cognitive and Positive approaches. For each, you will study its core assumptions, how it explains behaviour and the therapy or treatment it has inspired.

The Biological approach assumes that everything psychological has a physical basis – genes, brain structures and neurotransmitters. The Psychodynamic approach, founded by Freud, emphasises unconscious drives and childhood experiences. Behaviourism focuses on observable behaviour shaped by conditioning and the environment. The Cognitive approach studies internal mental processes like memory and perception, comparing the mind to a computer. Finally, the Positive approach turns the spotlight onto human flourishing, happiness and well-being.

A powerful way to prepare for this unit is to summarise each approach on a single side of A4. Write down the main assumptions, a key figure, and one piece of research that supports it. You will thank yourself when it comes to revision.

4. Classic Research Studies: The Foundation of Evidence |

Alongside the five approaches, Component 1 requires you to know two classic pieces of research in depth. These are landmark studies that have become part of psychology’s history. You will evaluate their methodology, ethics and how they informed the development of the chosen approach.

For example, when studying the Biological approach, you might examine Raine et al. (1997), who used PET scans to compare brain activity in murderers and non-murderers. For the Behaviourist approach, Watson and Rayner’s (1920) Little Albert experiment demonstrates how fear can be conditioned. The Cognitive approach often draws on Loftus and Palmer (1974) and their work on leading questions and memory reconstruction.

When reading these studies, go beyond the headline findings. Ask yourself: Who were the participants? What controls were in place? Was the sample biased? Could there be an alternative explanation? These habits will put you in the top bands of the marking criteria.

5. Unit 2: Investigating Behaviour – Research Methods |

Component 2 is all about how psychologists actually conduct their research. You will learn to design investigations, select appropriate methods and handle the data they generate. This unit underpins everything you do in Psychology and is heavily examined through scenarios and data-response questions.

You will meet four main research methods: experiments (laboratory, field and natural), observations, self-reports (questionnaires and interviews) and correlations. For each, you need to understand the aim, hypothesis, variables, sampling techniques and the concepts of validity and reliability.

Self-reports may feel straightforward, but designing a good questionnaire without leading or ambiguous questions is a skill that takes practice. Similarly, distinguishing a natural experiment from a quasi-experiment is a subtle but crucial point that examiners love to test. A summer task could be to write four research questions and decide which method would be most suitable for each, justifying your choice.

6. Designing and Evaluating Experiments |

Experiments are the cornerstone of psychology. In AS Eduqas, you will differentiate between independent groups, repeated measures and matched pairs designs. Each design has its own strengths and limitations concerning participant variables and order effects, and you need to be able to recommend the best solution for a given situation.

When evaluating an experiment, always consider internal validity – did the independent variable really cause the change in the dependent variable? Then look at external validity – can the results be generalised beyond the laboratory settings? Practice writing short ‘PEE’ (Point, Evidence, Explain) paragraphs about the strengths and weaknesses of different designs.

You should also revisit the concept of research variables. The independent variable (IV) is manipulated, the dependent variable (DV) is measured, and extraneous variables are those you must control to avoid confounding results. Make sure you can operationalise variables clearly; for instance, instead of ‘memory ability’, use ‘number of words correctly recalled from a list of 20’.

7. Ethics in Psychological Research |

Ethics are treated as a central theme across both AS components. The British Psychological Society (BPS) Code of Ethics and Conduct provides a framework of four key principles: respect, competence, responsibility and integrity. In your exams, you will apply these to novel scenarios as well as the classic studies you study.

More concretely, you must know how psychologists deal with informed consent, deception, protection from harm, the right to withdraw and confidentiality. When a study such as Milgram’s obedience experiment is discussed, you should be ready to debate the ethical trade-offs and explore what modern guidelines would demand differently.

A valuable summer activity is to watch a documentary or read a summary of a controversial classic study. Then use a highlighter to mark every ethical issue you spot. Afterwards, write a short proposal suggesting how the study could be redesigned to meet contemporary BPS standards.

8. Handling Data: Descriptive Statistics Made Simple |

You do not need to be a maths genius, but you must feel comfortable with numbers. In Component 2, descriptive statistics help you summarise and present data. The main measures of central tendency are mean, median and mode; measures of dispersion include range and standard deviation.

Formulas will be provided in the exam, but understanding what they mean is what scores marks. Practise calculating these by hand with small data sets this summer. For example, to find the mean, use the formula: Mean (x̄) = Σx / n. The standard deviation is given by SD = √(Σ(x – x̄)² / (n-1)).

You will also be asked to select and create appropriate graphs – bar charts, histograms and scatter diagrams. Histograms represent continuous data with no gaps between bars, while bar charts display discrete categorical data. Learn the difference early and you will avoid a very common mistake.

9. Assessment Objectives and Exam Skills |

The AS exams test three Assessment Objectives (AOs). AO1 is about knowledge and understanding – demonstrating what you know. AO2 is application – using psychology to explain real-life scenarios. AO3 is evaluation and analysis – weighing up strengths, limitations and conflicting evidence.

Many students run into trouble by treating every question as an AO1 memory dump. A typical ‘Describe and evaluate’ question expects roughly one-third AO1 and two-thirds AO3. Your evaluation should include supporting and challenging evidence, methodological commentary and discussions of issues like reductionism or ethics.

You can start practising now. Take a simple statement such as ‘Social media use causes anxiety in teenagers’. Identify the psychological approaches that might explain it, design a study to test it, and then list at least two strengths and two limitations of your design. This exercise builds all three AOs simultaneously.

10. Building Your Psychological Vocabulary |

Psychology has its own language, and using it accurately demonstrates scholarship. Terms such as demand characteristics, social desirability bias, ecological validity, operationalisation, counterbalancing, and inter-rater reliability will become second nature only if you revisit them regularly.

Create a set of flashcards with the term on one side and a concise definition plus an example on the other. Sort them into methodological terms, evaluative terms and approach-specific terms. Test yourself once a week during the summer, and you will enter Year 12 with a head start.

A good habit is to use high-value vocabulary in everyday conversations about psychological topics. Instead of saying ‘the study wasn’t realistic’, try ‘the study’s ecological validity was compromised because the task lacked mundane realism’. It sounds academic, and soon it will feel natural.

11. Summer Reading and Activities |

You do not need to purchase a textbook yet, but you can start exploring. The Eduqas AS specification and sample assessment materials are freely available online; read them to understand exactly what is expected. The BPS website has a student section full of accessible articles and ethical guidelines.

Podcasts such as ‘All in the Mind’ from BBC Radio 4 or ‘The Psych Files’ offer digestible introductions to classic topics. Set a goal of listening to two episodes a week and jotting down one new term each time. Watching TED Talks on topics like memory, resilience or happiness aligns perfectly with the Positive approach and cognitive themes.

BBC Radio 4 的《All in the Mind》或《The Psych Files》等播客,为经典课题提供了非常容易消化的入门内容。

For a more hands-on activity, start a psychology journal. Every time you notice an interesting behaviour – why you procrastinated, a friend’s emotional response – try to explain it using what you have learned. This bridges the gap between textbook theory and real life, which is exactly what the application questions want to see.

12. Setting Yourself Up for Success |

Finally, your mindset matters. AS Psychology is demanding but immensely rewarding. The students who thrive are not necessarily the ones who arrive knowing the most, but the ones who stay curious, ask questions and consistently do the small things well.

Set up a weekly schedule for the summer that mixes reading, note-making and low-stakes self-testing. Even 30 minutes a day can dramatically reduce your cognitive load when school begins. Treat the course not as a memory test, but as an ongoing conversation about what it means to be human. Welcome aboard, and enjoy the journey.
