The AS WJEC Philosophy course introduces students to fundamental questions about knowledge, morality, and the existence of God. This article summarises the core knowledge points that every student should master, including rationalism vs empiricism, the tripartite definition of knowledge, ethical theories such as utilitarianism, Kantian ethics, virtue ethics, and arguments for and against God’s existence. Each section provides a clear overview to support revision and exam preparation.

1. Rationalism and Empiricism |

Rationalism claims that reason is the primary source of knowledge, and that certain concepts and truths are innate. Empiricism argues that all knowledge comes from sense experience. Key rationalists include Descartes, who used methodological doubt to arrive at ‘I think, therefore I am’, and argued for innate ideas of God and the self. Empiricists like Locke rejected innate ideas, proposing the mind as a tabula rasa at birth, with simple ideas derived from sensation and reflection acquiring complex ideas. Hume further distinguished impressions and ideas, and argued that all meaningful ideas must be traceable to sense experience.

Rationalism relies on a priori reasoning; empiricism relies on a posteriori evidence. This debate is central to epistemology.

2. A Priori and A Posteriori Knowledge |

A priori knowledge is independent of experience, true by reason alone (e.g., mathematical truths like 2+2=4). A posteriori knowledge depends on empirical evidence (e.g., ‘water boils at 100°C’ at sea level). The analytic/synthetic distinction is often linked: analytic truths are true by definition (a priori), while synthetic truths require checking against the world (a posteriori). Kant introduced synthetic a priori judgments, claiming that some knowledge (such as causality) is both informative and independent of experience. Understanding these classifications helps evaluate philosophical arguments.

Philosophers often ask whether moral or religious knowledge can be a priori.

3. The Tripartite Definition and Gettier Cases |

The traditional definition of knowledge is justified true belief (JTB): S knows that P if and only if (1) P is true, (2) S believes that P, and (3) S is justified in believing that P. Edmund Gettier’s famous counterexamples showed that JTB is not sufficient for knowledge. In a classic Gettier-type case, a person forms a justified true belief that is only accidentally true (e.g., based on a misleading clock that just happens to be correct). This sparked debate over what additional condition is needed, such as reliable causation or no false lemmas. For AS exams, you need to explain JTB and at least one Gettier-style counterexample, and discuss responses like the no false lemma condition or reliabilism.

4. Scepticism and Perception |

Philosophical scepticism questions whether we can have any knowledge about the external world. Global scepticism argues that it is possible we are deceived by an evil demon (Descartes) or are brains in vats, so our sensory beliefs could be entirely false. Local scepticism might target specific areas such as induction (Hume). Perceptual theories like direct realism, indirect realism, and idealism offer different responses. Direct realism claims we perceive objects directly; indirect realism says we perceive sense-data caused by objects; idealism denies mind-independent matter. In WJEC, you may also explore the argument from illusion and hallucination. Evaluating whether perceptions provide reliable knowledge is essential.

5. Utilitarianism |

Utilitarianism is a consequentialist ethical theory stating that the right action is the one that maximises overall happiness or ‘utility’. Jeremy Bentham proposed act utilitarianism, focusing on the quantity of pleasure calculated by the hedonic calculus (intensity, duration, certainty, propinquity, fecundity, purity, extent). John Stuart Mill refined the theory, arguing for higher and lower pleasures, asserting ‘it is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied’. Rule utilitarianism (Mill) suggests that we should follow rules that tend to promote the greatest happiness. Strengths include its apparent simplicity and fairness; weaknesses include the problem of measuring happiness, the challenge of justice (e.g., the tyranny of the majority), and the demandingness of impartiality. Understanding how to apply utilitarian reasoning to moral dilemmas is a core skill.

6. Kantian Ethics |

Immanuel Kant’s deontological ethics emphasises duty and the categorical imperative, rather than consequences. The categorical imperative has several formulations. The first formulation: ‘Act only on that maxim through which you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law.’ This universalisability test exposes contradictions in conception (e.g., making a false promise) or in will. The second formulation, the humanity formula: ‘Act so that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in that of another, always as an end and never merely as a means.’ Kantian ethics also stresses autonomy, acting from reason and duty rather than inclination. For AS, you need to explain these principles, apply them to issues like lying or stealing, and evaluate strengths (respect for persons, universal standards) and weaknesses (conflicting duties, rigidity, lack of guidance on imperfect duties).

7. The Teleological Argument |

The teleological (design) argument claims that the order, purpose, and complexity in the universe suggest a designer – God. William Paley’s analogy of the watchmaker: if you find a watch, its intricacy implies a watchmaker; similarly, nature’s design implies a divine designer. The argument uses examples from biology and astronomy. David Hume’s criticisms, formulated before Darwin, question the analogy (world is more like a vegetable than a machine), argue the argument is not a true inference (effect to cause), and highlight the problem of evil – an imperfect world suggests an imperfect designer. Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection offered a naturalistic explanation for apparent design. Contemporary versions, like fine-tuning arguments, are also discussed. For WJEC, compare Paley with Hume and assess the strength of the evidence.

8. The Problem of Evil |

The problem of evil challenges the existence of an omnipotent, omnibenevolent God given the existence of evil and suffering. The logical problem argues that the following statements are inconsistent: God is omnipotent, God is wholly good, and evil exists. The evidential problem focuses on the amount and distribution of suffering that seems unnecessary for any greater good. Theodicies attempt to justify God’s ways. The free will defence (Plantinga) holds that God cannot give free will and simultaneously prevent moral evil, because free will is a greater good. The soul-making theodicy (Irenaeus, developed by Hick) sees suffering as necessary for moral growth. Process theology and belief in a limited God are alternative responses. For AS, you should explain the logical and evidential problems, evaluate at least two major responses, and identify their strengths and weaknesses.
