📚 A-Level CAIE Psychology: Essay Writing Framework and Model Answers | A-Level CAIE

Mastering essay writing is essential for success in CAIE A-Level Psychology. The assessment requires you to demonstrate knowledge, application, and critical evaluation within a structured response. This guide offers a clear framework and worked examples to help you build high-scoring essays for Papers 1–4.

1. Understanding the Assessment Objectives |

CAIE Psychology essays assess three objectives: AO1 (knowledge and understanding), AO2 (application of knowledge), and AO3 (analysis and evaluation). For a typical 12-mark essay, the marks are often split as 4 for AO1, 4 for AO2, and 4 for AO3. Recognising this division lets you allocate your word count and depth accordingly.

CAIE 心理学论文评估三个目标:AO1(知识与理解)、AO2(知识应用)和 AO3(分析与评价)。

Always decode the command term in the question. “Describe and evaluate” requires substantial AO3 plus concise AO1. “Discuss” demands a blend of AO1, AO2, and AO3. “To what extent” pushes you towards a balanced evaluation with a clear conclusion.

2. The PEEL Paragraph Structure | PEEL

Every analytical paragraph in your essay should follow the PEEL model. The table below explains each component.

PEEL Element English Explanation
Point State the argument or idea clearly in one sentence.
Evidence Support the point with a specific study or example, including authors and key findings.
Explanation Explain how the evidence illustrates the point. Link theory to behaviour.
Link Connect back to the question or transition to the next evaluative point.

Point
Link

For example, when evaluating a study, the Point could be “The experiment lacked ecological validity.” The Evidence would name the study and describe the artificial setting. The Explanation clarifies why this matters for real-world behaviour, and the Link may compare it to a field study or the question’s scenario.

AO1 marks reward precise recall of a study’s aim, procedure, sample, results, and conclusion. Avoid vague statements. Always include the researcher name(s) and year, and quantify findings where possible. For instance, “Milgram (1963) found that 65% of participants administered the maximum 450V shock.”

Describe the procedure in logical order and highlight the research method and design. Use terms like “laboratory experiment with independent measures design” or “naturalistic observation with time sampling.” Keep the description concise but complete; save evaluation for AO3 sections.

4. Evaluating Research: The GRAVE Framework | 评价研究:GRAVE 框架

A powerful tool for AO3 paragraphs is the GRAVE acronym, which stands for Generalisability, Reliability, Applicability, Validity, and Ethics. Use these headings to structure your evaluation of any core study.

Generalisability: Is the sample representative? Milgram used only American males, limiting generalisation to women or other cultures. Reliability: Were procedures standardised? Bandura used a standardised script and controlled toys, raising reliability. Applicability: Can findings explain real-world behaviour? High obedience rates help explain blind obedience in hierarchies. Validity: Does the study measure what it claims? A laboratory setting may lack mundane realism, lowering ecological validity. Ethics: Were participants protected from harm? Deception and lack of informed consent in Milgram sparked ethical debate.

Try to link each evaluation point directly to the question. If the question asks about “the biological approach,” weigh generalisability in the context of genetic determinism rather than giving a generic critique.

5. Discussing Issues and Debates |

High-mark essays will engage with wider debates such as nature vs nurture, reductionism vs holism, determinism vs free will, and idiographic vs nomothetic approaches. Use these to deepen your AO3 commentary.

For example, when evaluating Milgram, you might argue that his situational explanation is deterministic because it suggests behaviour is controlled by environmental factors. A contrasting point could highlight that, although 65% obeyed, 35% exercised free will by resisting. This demonstrates the ability to see both sides of a debate.

Also consider cultural and gender biases. Many classic studies used androcentric and ethnocentric samples. Highlighting these limitations shows evaluative sophistication and can earn top AO3 marks.

6. Application to Real Life (AO2) | 实际应用 (AO2)

AO2 marks are earned by applying psychological knowledge to novel situations, case studies, or hypothetical scenarios. The question may present a short vignette and ask you to use a study to explain the behaviour.

When tackling AO2, explicitly link the research to the scenario. For example, “Just as Milgram’s participants felt pressure from an authority figure in a legitimate context, the soldiers at Abu Ghraib may have followed orders due to a perceived hierarchy.” A strong application uses the study’s terminology and acknowledges limitations of the parallel.

7. Model Answer: 10-mark Methods Question |

Question: “Describe the sample and sampling technique used in one study from the social approach. (10)”

Candidate answer:

The study by Milgram (1963) on obedience recruited 40 male participants aged between 20 and 50 years. They were gathered through a newspaper advertisement and direct mail solicitation in the New Haven area. This volunteer (self-selected) sampling technique invited individuals to take part in a study on memory and learning at Yale University. Participants were offered $4.50 for their time, which may have attracted those who were especially interested in science or in need of money. The sample was all male and drawn from a single geographic location, meaning it is not representative of women or individuals from other cultures. Volunteer sampling is also prone to bias because the participants who respond may share particular personality traits, such as being more compliant or authority-oriented. However, this method gave Milgram a group that was willing to engage in a demanding laboratory procedure, and it was convenient and cost-effective for recruiting participants. The sample size of 40 was relatively small, which limits the generalisability of the findings even though the behavioural results were striking. (Marks: AO1 4 marks for sample and technique description, AO2 6 marks for evaluation of the sampling method and implications for the study.)

8. Model Answer: 12-mark Discussion Question |

Question: “Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the study by Bandura et al. (1961) on aggression. (12)”

Candidate answer:

Bandura et al. (1961) conducted a laboratory experiment to investigate whether children would imitate aggressive behaviour modelled by an adult. 72 children aged 3–6 from Stanford University Nursery were divided into three groups: aggressive model, non-aggressive model, and no model. The key finding was that children exposed to the aggressive model showed significantly more imitative physical and verbal aggression than the other groups. (AO1)

One strength of this study is its high internal validity. The laboratory setting enabled strict control of extraneous variables: the toys, room layout, and model’s actions were all standardised. The researchers used a matched-pairs design to control for baseline aggression levels, and inter-rater reliability was checked when observing the children’s behaviour. This precision strengthens the cause-and-effect conclusion that modelling influences aggression. (AO3)

Another strength is the applicability of the findings. The study provided evidence for Social Learning Theory, explaining how children might acquire aggressive behaviours by observing role models around them. This has practical use in designing interventions, such as limiting children’s exposure to media violence. (AO2/AO3)

However, the study suffers from limitations of ecological validity. The aggression was directed towards a Bobo doll, which is designed to be hit and bounces back. Hitting an inanimate object is not the same as real interpersonal aggression, so the behaviour observed may lack mundane realism. Additionally, the children may have been responding to demand characteristics, believing they were expected to imitate the adult. (AO3)

Ethically, the study raises issues because it encouraged aggression in children, and there was no follow-up to check whether the aggressive behaviours persisted. Some children could have experienced distress when observing the adult’s aggressive acts toward the doll. Although parental consent was obtained, the potential long-term effects were not addressed. (AO3)

Overall, Bandura et al.’s study is a well-controlled demonstration of the role of observational learning in aggression, though the artificial setting and ethical concerns must be taken into account when generalising to everyday behaviour.

9. Common Mistakes to Avoid |

Listing studies without evaluation: Many candidates describe a study then move on to the next without any commentary. For top marks, every piece of AO1 should trigger a related AO3 point.

Confusing researcher names and dates: A common error is attributing a study to the wrong psychologist. Double-check your core studies sheet and memorise author–year pairings precisely.

Writing all evaluation in one block: Scatter your evaluation throughout the essay rather than saving it all for the end. This keeps your argument balanced and integrated.
