📚 Core Knowledge Summary for KS3 CIE Psychology | KS3 CIE

Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour. This article summarises the core knowledge points for Key Stage 3 (KS3) students following the Cambridge International (CIE) curriculum. Understanding these fundamentals will help you build a strong foundation for later studies.

1. What is Psychology? |

Psychology is defined as the scientific study of human mind and behaviour. It aims to explain why we think, feel and act the way we do, using evidence gathered through systematic observation and experimentation rather than mere opinion or common sense.

The word ‘psychology’ comes from the Greek words ‘psyche’ (mind/soul) and ‘logos’ (study). Modern psychology covers many areas, such as cognitive psychology (mental processes), social psychology (how we interact with others), developmental psychology (changes across the lifespan) and biological psychology (links between brain and behaviour).

2. The Scientific Approach |

Psychologists use the scientific method. This involves forming a hypothesis (a testable prediction), designing a study to test it, collecting data, analysing the results and drawing conclusions. This systematic process helps ensure that findings are objective, reliable and valid.

Key variables in an experiment include the independent variable (IV), which the researcher manipulates, the dependent variable (DV), which is measured, and extraneous variables that need to be controlled so they do not affect the results. Researchers must also operationalise variables – that means defining them clearly so they can be measured.

3. Types of Research Methods |

Laboratory experiments take place in a highly controlled setting. The researcher manipulates the IV and measures the DV while controlling extraneous variables. They provide high internal validity but may lack ecological validity because the artificial environment differs from everyday life.

Field experiments are conducted in a natural, real-world setting. The IV is still manipulated, but there is less control over extraneous variables. These experiments tend to have higher ecological validity, though it can be harder to establish cause-and-effect relationships with certainty.

Observational studies involve watching and recording behaviour without manipulating variables. They can be participant (the researcher joins in) or non-participant, and overt (participants know they are being watched) or covert. Questionnaires and interviews allow researchers to gather self-report data on attitudes, beliefs and behaviours. Case studies provide in-depth information about a single individual or small group, offering rich detail but limited generalisability.

4. Memory: Encoding, Storage and Retrieval |

Memory relies on three core processes: encoding (converting information into a form the brain can use), storage (maintaining the encoded information over time) and retrieval (accessing the stored information when it is needed). All three must work smoothly for us to remember effectively.

Encoding can take different forms. Visual encoding processes images and pictures, acoustic encoding processes sounds, and semantic encoding processes the meaning of information. Research by Baddeley showed that semantic encoding leads to the best long-term retention, while acoustic encoding is often used in short-term memory tasks.

5. Models of Memory |

The multi-store model of memory, proposed by Atkinson and Shiffrin, describes memory as consisting of three separate stores. Sensory memory has a very large capacity but holds information for only a fraction of a second. If we pay attention to it, information passes into short-term memory (STM).

STM has a limited capacity, famously described by Miller as 7 ± 2 items (or chunks), and a limited duration of about 18–30 seconds without rehearsal. Rehearsal helps transfer information from STM into long-term memory (LTM), which is believed to have a potentially unlimited capacity and can store information for a lifetime. Forgetting from STM often happens due to displacement, when new items push out older ones.

6. Forgetting and Memory Improvement |

Forgetting can be explained by several theories. Decay theory suggests memory traces fade over time if they are not used. Interference theory argues that forgetting happens because other memories disrupt recall; proactive interference occurs when old learning disrupts new information, while retroactive interference happens when new learning disrupts old memories. Retrieval failure occurs when we cannot access information because we lack the right cues.

There are many evidence-based strategies to improve memory. These include regular rehearsal, chunking (grouping individual items into larger units), using mnemonic devices such as acronyms or the method of loci, and elaboration (linking new information to existing knowledge in a meaningful way).

7. Sensation and Perception |

Sensation refers to the process by which our sensory receptors detect physical stimuli from the environment, such as light waves or sound waves. Perception is the active process of selecting, organising and interpreting these sensations, giving them meaning and helping us understand what we see, hear and feel.

In vision, light enters the eye, is focused by the lens onto the retina, and is converted into neural signals that travel to the brain. Despite changes in distance, angle or lighting, we perceive objects as stable thanks to perceptual constancies, such as size constancy, shape constancy and colour constancy. Visual illusions, like the Müller-Lyer illusion, demonstrate that perception can sometimes be tricked by contextual cues.

8. Social Influence: Conformity and Obedience |

Conformity is the tendency to change our behaviour or beliefs to match those of a group. This often happens because of normative social influence (wanting to fit in and be accepted) or informational social influence (believing the group knows better). Asch’s classic line-judgement study showed that many participants conformed to an obviously incorrect majority, demonstrating the power of group pressure.

Obedience involves following direct orders from an authority figure. Milgram’s electric shock experiment revealed that ordinary people are capable of inflicting severe pain on another person simply because they were told to do so by an experimenter in a lab coat. Factors such as proximity of the authority figure and diffusion of responsibility can influence obedience levels.

9. Attachment in Development |

Attachment is a deep and enduring emotional bond that connects an infant to a primary caregiver. John Bowlby argued that attachment has an evolutionary basis – infants are born with an innate drive to seek closeness to a caregiver, which increases their chances of survival. He emphasised the importance of a sensitive period in early childhood for forming a healthy attachment.

Mary Ainsworth developed the ‘Strange Situation’ procedure to assess attachment quality. She identified three main attachment styles: secure attachment (child explores, is upset when caregiver leaves but happy on return), insecure-avoidant (child shows little distress on separation and avoids contact on reunion), and insecure-resistant (child is clingy and very distressed when left, yet resist comfort on return). Deprivation and disruption of attachment can have long-term effects on emotional and social development.

10. Ethics in Psychological Research |

Ethical guidelines exist to protect the wellbeing, dignity and rights of research participants. Key principles include informed consent (participants should know what the study involves and agree to take part), the right to withdraw (participants can leave the study at any time without penalty), confidentiality (personal data must be kept private), protection from harm (participants should not experience physical or psychological distress greater than everyday life), and debriefing (explaining the true purpose of the study afterwards).

When deception is used – for instance, if participants are not told the full aim of a study to avoid demand characteristics – it must be carefully justified and followed by a thorough debriefing. An ethics committee usually reviews research proposals before the study begins to ensure these standards are met.
