1. Why a Summer Bridging Course? |

Moving from primary to secondary school brings new expectations: longer lessons, more independent research, and a deeper focus on cause-and-effect thinking. Geography at KS3 is not just about knowing place names–it is about linking physical processes to human activities and exploring real-world issues. A summer bridging course helps you activate prior knowledge, fill any gaps, and learn how to think like a geographer before the term begins.

2. Core Geographical Concepts: Place, Space and Scale |

Three big ideas run through the whole KS3 curriculum: place, space and scale. Place refers to the unique characteristics of a location–its physical landscape, culture and sense of identity. Space looks at how locations are connected and how patterns form across the Earth’s surface. Scale reminds us to examine local, regional and global perspectives. When you hear news about a flood, you are thinking in terms of place; when you track a hurricane on a map, you are using space; when you compare village life with city life, you are working with scale.

3. Map Skills: The Geographer’s Toolkit |

Reading and interpreting maps is a fundamental skill. You will revise grid references (4-figure and 6-figure), compass directions, map symbols and scale lines. Understanding how to measure straight-line and curved distances on an Ordnance Survey map gives you the power to plan routes and analyse landscapes. Height is shown through contour lines and spot heights, and you will learn to describe relief by reading a cross-section.

  • 4-figure grid reference identifies a grid square; 6-figure pinpoints a location within it.
  • Contour lines join points of equal height; closer lines mean steeper slopes. /
  • Always read the north arrow and check the scale. /

4. Weather and Climate: Atmosphere in Action |

Weather is the day-to-day state of the atmosphere, while climate is the average weather over 30 years. You will learn how to measure elements like temperature, precipitation, wind speed and air pressure using simple instruments. Understanding the difference between weather and climate is crucial for studying extreme events and global warming. The water cycle and types of rainfall (relief, convectional and frontal) explain why some places are wetter than others.

Water budget: Precipitation = Runoff + Evapotranspiration + Storage change

Anemometer / 风速计 Wind speed / 风速 km/h or m/s
Barometer / 气压计 Air pressure / 气压 hPa or mb

5. Rivers: Shaping the Land from Source to Mouth |

Rivers are powerful agents of erosion, transportation and deposition. As a river flows from its source to its mouth, its channel changes shape and its valley widens. You will identify features of the upper course (V-shaped valleys, waterfalls, gorges), middle course (meanders, ox-bow lakes) and lower course (floodplains, levees, deltas). The long profile and cross profile help you understand how gradient and energy influence these landforms.

  • Erosion processes: hydraulic action, abrasion, attrition, solution. /
  • Transportation: traction, saltation, suspension, solution. /
  • Deposition occurs when velocity falls, often on the inside of meander bends. /

6. Coasts: Where Land Meets Sea |

Coastlines are dynamic environments shaped by waves, tides and geology. Destructive waves erode the shore, creating cliffs, wave-cut platforms, caves, arches and stacks. Constructive waves build beaches, spits and bars. Longshore drift moves sediment along the coast, influencing beach shape and leading to the formation of features like tombolos. Coastal management techniques, such as groynes and sea walls, help protect settlements from erosion and flooding.

7. Population and Settlement: People on the Move |

Human geography starts with population–how many people live where, and why that matters. Key terms include birth rate, death rate, natural increase, population density and population distribution. The demographic transition model shows how population growth changes as a country develops. Settlement patterns (nucleated, linear, dispersed) and settlement hierarchy (from hamlet to city) explain how services and functions are organised across space.

4: Low stationary / 低位静止 Low / 低 Low / 低 Stable or decline / 稳定或下降

8. Economic Activity: From Primary to Quaternary |

Economic geography examines how people earn a living and how jobs are classified into sectors. Primary sector jobs extract raw materials (farming, mining, fishing). Secondary sector work involves manufacturing and processing. Tertiary sector provides services (retail, transport, education). The quaternary sector focuses on research and information technology. As countries develop, the balance shifts from primary towards tertiary and quaternary employment.

A key case study: the rise of high-tech industries in Cambridge, UK, shows how access to a skilled workforce and research facilities can create a science park economy.

9. Environmental Sustainability: Living Within Our Means |

Sustainability means meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Topics include renewable vs non-renewable resources, carbon footprints, climate change and waste management. The three pillars–social, economic and environmental–must be balanced. Small actions, like reducing food miles or protecting local green spaces, link directly to global goals.

The 3 Rs–Reduce, Reuse, Recycle–are a practical framework. In geography, we also add Rethink and Refuse. / 3R

10. Fieldwork and Enquiry: Learning Beyond the Classroom |

Geography comes alive through fieldwork. A summer bridging activity might involve mapping your local area, measuring river velocity with a float, or conducting a traffic survey. The enquiry process–ask a question, collect data, present findings, draw conclusions and evaluate–mirrors what you will do throughout KS3. This develops analytical thinking and makes abstract concepts tangible.

Example enquiry: ‘How does land use change with distance from the town centre?’ Students can collect primary data through land-use mapping and pedestrian counts.

11. Bridging Activities and Study Tips |

To make the most of your summer, try these bridging challenges: (1) Keep a weather diary for two weeks using simple instruments or apps. (2) Draw a sketch map of your route to school with symbols and a key. (3) Watch a documentary about a distant country and write down five geographical facts. (4) Research a local river or coastal area and create a fact file. Set aside 20 minutes a day for these tasks, and you will arrive in September ahead of the curve.

Learning tips: create flashcards for key vocabulary, draw mind maps for each topic, and practise answering ‘describe, explain and evaluate’ questions aloud. Remember, geography is visual–use photos and satellite images whenever you can. And always ask ‘why’ and ‘what if’ to deepen your understanding.
