1. The Colour Mixing Formula |

All colours are built from three primaries: red, yellow, and blue. When we mix two primary colours in roughly equal amounts, we create a secondary colour. This is one of the most fundamental formulas in art.

Red + Yellow = Orange

When red and yellow are combined, the vibrant secondary colour orange appears. Think of the warmth of a sunset or the skin of a ripe tangerine.

Blue + Yellow = Green

Blue and yellow mix to form green, evoking grass, leaves, and spring growth. The exact shade shifts depending on the ratio — more yellow gives a lime green, more blue a teal.

Red + Blue = Purple (Violet)

Red and blue create purple, a colour often associated with royalty and creativity. By adjusting the proportions, artists can achieve anything from soft lavender to deep violet.

When a primary and a secondary are mixed, the result is a tertiary colour, such as red-orange or blue-green. The mixing chain can be expressed as a progressive tree of hues.

2. Complementary Colour Theorem |

Colours that sit opposite each other on the colour wheel are called complementary pairs. These pairings create maximum contrast and visual vibration when placed side by side.

Red ⇌ Green, Blue ⇌ Orange, Yellow ⇌ Purple

The three main complementary pairs are red and green, blue and orange, and yellow and purple. Artists use them to make elements pop — for instance, a red apple against a green background appears intensely vivid.

Complement₁ + Complement₂ → Neutral grey or brown

When complementary colours are physically mixed together, they neutralise each other, producing muted browns, greys, or near-blacks. This theorem is vital for creating shadow tones without using black paint straight from the tube.

3. The Rule of Thirds Formula |

The rule of thirds is a compositional guideline that divides the picture plane into nine equal rectangles using two equally spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines.

Key focal points = Intersections of grid lines

Placing the main subject on one of the four intersection points, or along the lines, tends to produce a more dynamic and balanced composition than centring the subject. For example, in a landscape, the horizon often aligns with the top or bottom third rather than exactly in the middle.

Visual weight = ⅓ vs ⅔ balance

This formula helps organise positive and negative space: one third of the frame might hold the main subject, while the remaining two thirds provide breathing room. The asymmetry feels natural to the human eye.

4. Perspective Formula: Vanishing Point and Horizon Line |

Linear perspective is a mathematical system for creating the illusion of depth on a flat surface. It relies on the concept that parallel lines appear to converge as they recede into the distance, meeting at a vanishing point on the horizon line.

One-point perspective: All receding parallel lines → 1 Vanishing Point

When a rectangular object faces the viewer directly, such as a road or railway track seen head-on, all depth lines converge to a single vanishing point on the horizon. This gives a strong sense of depth and is often used for corridors or tunnels.

Two-point perspective: Each set of receding edges → 2 Vanishing Points

When an object is viewed at an angle, such as the corner of a building, two sets of parallel lines recede to two separate vanishing points on the horizon line. This formula captures how we see most three-dimensional forms in everyday life.

Object size ∝ 1/distance from viewer

The perceived size of an object decreases proportionally with its distance from the viewer. This relationship can be applied when drawing rows of trees, lampposts, or figures to maintain realistic scale.

5. Proportion Formula: The Golden Ratio |

The golden ratio, often denoted by the Greek letter φ (phi), describes a proportion that appears in nature, classical architecture, and art. It is valued for its aesthetically pleasing balance.

a / b = (a+b) / a = φ ≈ 1.618

This formula means that the ratio of the larger part to the smaller part is the same as the ratio of the whole to the larger part. In practical art, a golden rectangle with side lengths in a 1:1.618 ratio is often used as a basis for composition, and the Fibonacci spiral derived from this ratio can guide the placement of focal points.

Focal point placement → Golden spiral curve

By drawing a spiral that follows the golden ratio within the frame, artists can lead the viewer’s eye through the composition in a fluid, natural sweep, as seen in works like da Vinci’s ‘Mona Lisa’ or Hokusai’s ‘The Great Wave’.

6. Tonal Value Formula: From Light to Dark |

Tonal value describes how light or dark a colour or shade appears. Mastering value is essential for creating form, depth, and mood in two-dimensional work.

Value scale: 1 (white) → 5 (mid-grey) → 9 (black)

A typical nine-step value scale helps artists calibrate contrasts. Highlights sit near value 2, midtones around value 5, and deep shadows near value 8. The human eye perceives a shape as three-dimensional when there is a smooth transition between these values.

Contrast = |Value₁ − Value₂|

High contrast (a large difference in values) draws attention and suggests drama or strong lighting; low contrast (small difference) gives a soft, subdued atmosphere. Chiaroscuro, the technique of using bold tonal contrasts, relies on this formula.

Shading a sphere: Highlight + Light + Midtone + Core shadow + Reflected light + Cast shadow

These six tonal zones describe the formula for rendering a simple sphere with a strong illusion of volume. Beginners often forget the reflected light, which is the subtle light bouncing back into the shadow side from the surface the object sits on.

7. Colour Harmony Formulas |

Colour harmonies are tried-and-tested combinations derived from the colour wheel that consistently produce visually pleasing results. They act as recipes for selecting a palette.

Analogous harmony: colours that sit next to each other on the wheel, e.g. blue, blue-green, green. Triadic harmony: three colours equally spaced (120° apart), such as red, yellow, and blue. Split-complementary: a base colour plus the two colours adjacent to its complement, e.g. blue with red-orange and yellow-orange.

Harmony type Formula Example
Analogous Adjacent colours on wheel (≈20°–30° apart) Yellow, yellow-green, green
Complementary Opposite colours (180° apart) Red, green
Triadic 3 colours equally spaced (120° apart) Red, yellow, blue
Split-complementary Base + 2 colours adjacent to its complement Blue, red-orange, yellow-orange

Understanding these formulas allows you to break them intentionally; a harmonious base can be disrupted with a small accent of discord for emphasis, a technique often used by contemporary illustrators.

8. Texture and Pattern Creation Rules |

Texture refers to the surface quality of an artwork, real (tactile) or implied (visual). Pattern is the regular repetition of elements. Both can be generated by following simple generative rules.

Repetition + Consistent spacing = Pattern

A pattern emerges when a motif (a dot, a leaf shape, a geometric figure) is repeated at regular intervals. Varying the motif or the spacing introduces rhythm and prevents the design from becoming monotonous.

Random marks × density = Visual texture

To imply the texture of fur, grass, or rocky surfaces, artists use a mass of small, irregular marks. The perceived texture becomes ‘heavier’ as the density of marks increases. Cross-hatching and stippling are classic applications of this formula.

Scale contrast + juxtaposition → Tactile illusion

Placing a rough-textured object next to a smooth one in a still life, or contrasting heavy impasto paint with flat washes, makes the tactile quality more pronounced in the viewer’s mind.

9. Balance and Symmetry Theorem |

Balance governs the distribution of visual weight in a composition. Symmetry is one type of balance, but asymmetry can be equally stable when its elements follow a clear visual formula.

Symmetrical balance: Left side ≈ Right side (mirror image)

If you draw a vertical axis down the centre of the artwork and both halves are visually equal or near-identical, the composition has formal, symmetrical balance. This often conveys calm, order, and tradition, as seen in many portraits and religious paintings.

Asymmetrical balance: Large object × small distance = Small object × large distance from centre

Think of a seesaw: a large shape near the centre can be balanced by a small shape far from the centre. A dark, heavy form on one side can be offset by a cluster of lighter but brightly coloured shapes on the other. This dynamic balance is more common in modern and contemporary art.

Radial balance: Elements radiate from a central point

Radial symmetry occurs in mandalas, rose windows, and spiral shells. All visual paths lead the eye inward or outward from a common centre, creating a hypnotic, unified effect.

10. The Formula for Creating Depth: Aerial Perspective |

Aerial (or atmospheric) perspective is the formula for how distance affects the colour, clarity, and value of objects. It is based on the observation that the atmosphere scatters light and particles, making distant elements appear hazier, bluer, and lighter.

Distance → Lower contrast + Less detail + Bluer hue

As objects recede into the background, their edges soften, colour saturation drops, and they take on the bluish-grey tint of the sky. In landscape painting, distant mountains are painted with muted, cool colours, while the foreground retains sharp detail and warm, saturated colours.

Overlap + Size change + Vertical position = Layers of depth

To build a strong sense of space, artists combine three spatial formulas: overlap (an object covering part of another is perceived as closer), size change (distant objects are smaller), and vertical position (objects higher on the picture plane tend to be seen as farther away).

Depth = f(contrast, colour temperature, detail, scale)

Although art is not pure mathematics, thinking of depth as a function of these four variables helps you diagnose why a background might feel too ‘flat’ — perhaps the contrast is still too strong or the colours too warm compared with the foreground.
