1. The Socialisation Formula |

Primary Socialisation (Family) + Secondary Socialisation (School, Media, Peers) → Self‑Identity

Socialisation is the lifelong process through which individuals learn the norms, values and behaviours appropriate to their society. The formula splits it into two main stages. Primary socialisation, mostly carried out by the family during early childhood, teaches basic language, manners and emotional bonds. Secondary socialisation then builds on this through institutions such as schools, peer groups and the mass media, shaping more complex roles and a broader social identity. Without both components, a coherent sense of self would not develop.

2. The Social Stratification Equation |

Occupation Level + Education + Income + Wealth → Social Class Position

Sociologists use multiple indicators to measure where a person sits in the social hierarchy. Occupation reflects status and skill; education signals cultural knowledge and qualifications; income refers to regular earnings; wealth includes assets such as property and savings. These factors combine to position someone as upper class, middle class, working class or underclass. Change in just one variable – for example, gaining a higher qualification – can shift the overall outcome, illustrating the dynamic nature of stratification.

3. Cultural Transmission Model |

Shared Norms + Values + Beliefs + Language → Culture

Culture is not biologically inherited; it must be transmitted from generation to generation. Norms are the unwritten rules of behaviour (e.g. queuing), values are shared principles about what is good or bad (e.g. respect), beliefs are specific ideas people hold to be true, and language is the symbolic system that allows all of these to be communicated. When these four elements are consistently shared within a group, a distinct culture emerges. Agents of cultural transmission include family, education, religion and the media.

4. Functions of the Family: A Functionalist Theorem |

Sexual Function + Reproduction + Economic Support + Primary Socialisation → Family Stability

The functionalist sociologist George Murdock (1949) argued that the family performs four essential functions in every society. The sexual function regulates adult sexual behaviour within a stable relationship; reproduction ensures the continuation of society; economic support involves providing food, shelter and resources; primary socialisation teaches children the culture’s norms and values. When all four functions are fulfilled, the family contributes to social stability. Critics point out that other institutions can also perform these functions, but the model remains a useful starting point.

5. Educational Achievement Factors |

Material Capital + Cultural Capital + Teacher Expectations × Effort → Educational Attainment

Educational achievement cannot be reduced to a single cause. Material capital includes resources such as a quiet study space, books and private tuition. Cultural capital, a term popularised by Pierre Bourdieu, refers to knowledge, tastes and skills valued by the education system. Teacher expectations can act as a multiplier: high expectations encourage greater effort, while low expectations can create a self‑fulfilling prophecy. The interaction of these factors helps explain why students from different social backgrounds often achieve different outcomes.

Factor Example
Material Capital Own bedroom, computer, private tutor
Cultural Capital Museum visits, classical music, educated parents
Teacher Expectations Streaming, positive labelling, feedback
Effort Homework completion, revision hours

6. Labelling and Deviance Amplification |

Deviant Act + Societal Reaction (Label) → Deviant Career (Amplification)

Howard Becker’s labelling theory suggests that deviance is not a quality of the act itself but a consequence of the social reaction to it. When a person commits a primary deviant act (e.g. breaking a school rule) and is publicly labelled as ‘troublemaker’, that label can stick. Others begin to treat the person according to the label, and the individual may eventually accept it, leading to further (secondary) deviance. This spiral is known as deviance amplification. The theorem highlights the power of social definitions in creating careers of deviance.

7. Power and Authority Equation |

Legitimacy + Consent → Authority
Force + Coercion → Power (without legitimacy)

Max Weber distinguished between power and authority. Power is the ability to make others do what you want, even against their will – it relies on force or the threat of force. Authority, by contrast, is power that people accept as legitimate. It rests on consent and shared belief that the ruler has the right to rule. For example, a teacher has authority in the classroom because students and parents accept the school’s rules, whereas a bully uses raw power. The equation helps students analyse political and social relationships critically.

8. Social Control Mechanisms |

Formal Controls (Law, Police, Courts) + Informal Controls (Family, Peers, Education) → Social Order

Every society needs mechanisms to ensure conformity. Formal social controls are codified rules enforced by official agencies: the police arrest, courts punish, and laws define what is criminal. Informal controls operate through socialisation and everyday interactions: family members praise or scold, friends ridicule or admire, and schools teach discipline. Together, these controls regulate behaviour and maintain social order. When informal controls weaken, formal controls often become more visible and punitive.

9. Gender Role Acquisition |

Canalisation + Manipulation + Verbal Appellation + Activity Differentiation → Gender Identity

Ann Oakley identified four processes through which children learn gender roles. Canalisation involves directing boys and girls towards different toys and interests (e.g. dolls for girls, cars for boys). Manipulation refers to the way adults encourage or discourage certain behaviours (e.g. ‘boys don’t cry’). Verbal appellation uses gendered language (‘good girl’, ‘brave boy’) to reinforce stereotypes. Activity differentiation pushes children into gender‑typical chores and tasks. Together, these processes shape a child’s sense of being masculine or feminine, often without the child being aware.

10. Social Change Drivers |

Technological Innovation + Ideological Shifts + Conflict + Demographic Change → Social Transformation

Societies do not stand still, and sociologists identify several engines of change. Technological innovation (e.g. the internet) reshapes communication, work and leisure. Ideological shifts, such as the rise of environmentalism or feminism, alter shared values. Conflict – whether class struggle, protest movements or revolutions – can overturn existing structures. Demographic change, including migration and ageing populations, restructures communities. When several of these forces combine, rapid and profound social transformation can occur.
