1. Cells – The Building Blocks of Life | 细胞——生命的基本单位

All living organisms are made of cells. A cell is the smallest unit that can carry out life processes. Both plant and animal cells have a nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane and mitochondria, but plant cells also have a rigid cell wall, a large permanent vacuole and chloroplasts for photosynthesis.

2. Levels of Organisation | 组织的层次

In multicellular organisms, cells are organised into tissues, tissues into organs, and organs into organ systems. For example, muscle cells form muscle tissue, which makes up the stomach (an organ), and the stomach works with other organs in the digestive system.

3. The Digestive System | 消化系统

The digestive system breaks down large insoluble food molecules into small soluble ones that can be absorbed into the bloodstream. Organs involved include the mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine and liver. Enzymes, such as amylase in the saliva, speed up digestion.

Respiration is the process of releasing energy from glucose. The respiratory system brings oxygen into the body and removes carbon dioxide. Air travels through the trachea, bronchi and bronchioles to reach the alveoli, where gas exchange takes place across the moist, thin walls into the bloodstream.

Read the text above aloud, paying attention to ‘trachea’ (tray-KEE-uh), ‘bronchi’ (BRONG-kye) and ‘alveoli’ (al-VEE-oh-lye). Then cover the text and try to explain the pathway of air without looking. Record yourself and listen back to spot any mistakes.

5. Photosynthesis | 光合作用

Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants make their own food using light energy. The equation can be summarised as: carbon dioxide + water → glucose + oxygen. This reaction takes place in the chloroplasts, and chlorophyll captures light energy. The glucose produced is used for respiration, growth and storage as starch.

To improve speaking fluency, practise saying the equation forwards and backwards. Try explaining the process in your own words to a classmate, using English only. Listen carefully when your partner explains respiration in the next section to compare the two processes.

6. Respiration | 呼吸作用

Aerobic respiration releases energy from glucose in the presence of oxygen. The word equation is: glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water. This process occurs continuously in the mitochondria of cells. The energy released is used for muscle contraction, maintaining body temperature and building new molecules.

Create a dialogue between a plant and an animal cell discussing how they obtain energy. Perform this dialogue with a friend to practise both science and conversation skills.

Characteristics are passed from parents to offspring through genes located on chromosomes in the nucleus. DNA carries the genetic code. Some features are determined by a single gene, while others are influenced by multiple genes and the environment. Dominant alleles mask the effect of recessive alleles.

Producers (green plants) are eaten by primary consumers, which are eaten by secondary consumers. Decomposers break down dead material and recycle nutrients.
