1. The Socialisation Equation |

S = P₁ + P₂

Socialisation (S) is the lifelong process through which we learn the culture of our society. It can be broken down into two fundamental parts: primary socialisation (P₁), which happens inside the family during early childhood, and secondary socialisation (P₂), which occurs later through institutions such as schools, peer groups and the mass media. Together they shape our norms, values and identity.

  • Key formula: Primary agents + Secondary agents → Internalised culture

2. Culture = Shared Meaning |

C = {S, L, V, N}

Culture (C) can be defined as the whole way of life of a group of people. It is composed of a set of shared elements: Symbols (S), Language (L), Values (V) and Norms (N). These components work together like a toolkit that allows members of a society to communicate, understand each other and know how to behave in different situations.

  • Theorem: C is stable when V and N are widely accepted.

3. Norms and Values: Rules of Society |

V → N → S → A

Values (V) are general beliefs about what is good and desirable. They give rise to specific Norms (N) – unwritten rules of behaviour. When a norm is broken, a Sanction (S) is applied, which can be positive (reward) or negative (punishment). This feedback leads to Adjustment (A) of behaviour, reinforcing social order. The formula reads: Values produce Norms, Norm violations trigger Sanctions, and Sanctions guide future Actions.

4. The Functionalist View: Society as a System |

Social Stability = Σ (Functions of Institutions)

Functionalism sees society as an organism in which all institutions – such as the family, education, religion and the economy – perform vital functions. The sum (Σ) of these contributions maintains equilibrium. For instance, education transmits knowledge and shared values, while the family provides emotional support and regulates reproduction. If one institution falters, others must adapt to restore balance.

  • Theorem: Every part of society has a manifest or latent function.

5. The Marxist Formula: Base and Superstructure |

B → S → I

In Marxist theory, the economic Base (B) – the means and relations of production – determines the shape of the Superstructure (S), which includes the family, education, law and religion. The superstructure then spreads the ruling-class Ideology (I), justifying inequality and maintaining the capitalist system. This causal chain can be summarised as: Base shapes Superstructure, Superstructure broadcasts Ideology.

6. Feminist Theory: Patriarchy |

Pₚ = M × I × C

Patriarchy (Pₚ) is a system of male domination that is sustained through three multipliers: Male control of resources and decision-making (M), Institutional reinforcement in law, media and education (I), and Cultural assumptions about gender roles (C). The formula underlines that patriarchy is not just about individual attitudes – it is structurally embedded and reproduced daily.

7. Social Stratification: The Glass Ceiling Theorem |

M = f(C, G, E, A)

Social mobility (M) is not a freely chosen path; it is a function of Class (C), Gender (G), Ethnicity (E) and Age (A). The glass ceiling is an invisible barrier that prevents women and ethnic minorities from reaching top positions, regardless of their qualifications. The theorem states that even in apparently meritocratic societies, ascribed characteristics limit achieved status, making M dependent on factors beyond individual effort.

8. The Cycle of Poverty |

LI → PE → LS → LI

Low Income (LI) restricts access to good quality housing, nutrition and educational resources, leading to Poor Educational outcomes (PE). Poor education then results in Low Skills (LS) and limited qualifications, which trap individuals back into Low Income (LI). The cycle repeats across generations, demonstrating how structural inequality reproduces itself unless intervention breaks the link.

9. The Self-Fulfilling Prophecy in Education |

TE → SB → C

A teacher’s expectation (TE) – whether high or low – is communicated to the student through subtle cues such as attention, praise and criticism. This influences the student’s self-image and behaviour (SB), and eventually the student’s performance shifts to Confirm (C) the original expectation. Rosenthal and Jacobson called this the ‘Pygmalion effect’: when teachers expect more, students achieve more.

10. The Hawthorne Effect: Observation Changes Behaviour |

O → ΔB → D’

In sociological research, the very act of observing participants (O) can alter their behaviour (ΔB), leading to Data (D’) that do not reflect the true, natural situation. This was first noticed in the Hawthorne factory studies, where workers’ productivity increased simply because they were being watched. Researchers must therefore consider the impact of their own presence when collecting data.

11. Family Diversity Theorem |

F = {N, E, L, R, S, C}

Contemporary family forms (F) extend far beyond the traditional nuclear family. The set includes Nuclear families (N), Extended families (E), Lone-parent families (L), Reconstituted or step-families (R), Same-sex parent families (S) and Cohabiting couples without children (C). This diversity reflects changing social values, economic pressures and legal reforms, and challenges the idea that there is one ‘normal’ family type.

12. Research Ethics: Informed Consent Formula |

IC = V + I + C

Informed Consent (IC) is a cornerstone of ethical sociological research. It requires three components: Voluntary participation (V) – participants must not be coerced; full Information (I) about the aims, procedures and any potential risks of the study; and the Capacity (C) to understand this information and make a decision. Only when all three are present can participants give valid consent, and they retain the right to withdraw at any time.
