1. Introduction to Green Bites | Green Bites

Green Bites is a new business idea developed by two friends, Mia and Lucas. They are passionate about healthy eating and want to produce organic snack bars made from oats, nuts and dried fruit. The bars will be sold online through their own website and also supplied to local health food shops. Mia has a background in nutrition, while Lucas has experience in social media marketing. They have not yet started trading and are in the planning stage. They aim to launch in three months’ time. Their mission is to provide tasty, affordable and healthy snacking options for busy people.

Green Bites

They have conducted some initial research. A survey of 100 local residents showed that 68% are interested in buying healthy snacks if priced below £1.50. They also looked at competitors and found that similar bars sell for between £1.80 and £2.50. This suggests an opportunity to capture customers with a lower price. Mia and Lucas have each saved £500. They estimate they need a total of £2,000 to cover start-up costs such as equipment, ingredients, packaging and website setup. They are considering applying for a bank loan of £1,000 to make up the shortfall.

2. Types of Business Organisation |

When two or more people start a business together with the aim of making a profit, they often form a partnership. Mia and Lucas are setting up Green Bites together, sharing capital, skills and decision-making. This is a classic example of a partnership. In a partnership, each owner is usually responsible for the debts of the business (unlimited liability), unless they form a limited liability partnership. Green Bites, as it is currently described, is an unincorporated partnership, meaning Mia and Lucas are personally liable for any losses.

A partnership allows the owners to combine different strengths. Mia brings nutritional expertise, which adds credibility to the product, while Lucas contributes marketing skills. However, potential disagreements between partners and the burden of unlimited liability are risks they must consider. In the case study, you might be asked to identify the type of business organisation and discuss advantages or disadvantages of this structure for Green Bites.

3. Market Research and Target Market |

Mia and Lucas conducted primary research by surveying 100 local residents. Primary research involves gathering new, first-hand data directly from potential customers. In this case, the survey gave them useful information about the price customers are willing to pay. They also carried out secondary research by looking at competitors’ prices. Secondary research uses data that already exists, such as reports, websites or other published materials. By combining both methods, they can make more informed decisions about their product and pricing strategy.

Based on their research, Green Bites’ target market appears to be health-conscious individuals who want convenient snacks at an affordable price. Specifically, these could be young professionals, students and busy parents who shop at local health stores or online. Defining a clear target market helps a business focus its marketing efforts and design products that truly meet customer needs. When analysing a case study, always look for clues about whom the business is trying to attract.

4. The Marketing Mix (4Ps) | 营销组合 (4Ps)

The marketing mix is a combination of four elements that a business uses to meet customer needs: Product, Price, Place and Promotion. For Green Bites, the product is an organic snack bar made from healthy ingredients. This product appeals to health-conscious consumers who are looking for natural alternatives to sugary snacks. The packaging will also be eco-friendly, reinforcing the healthy and sustainable brand image.

Price is a critical competitive weapon. The survey suggests customers are willing to pay below £1.50, and competitors charge up to £2.50. Green Bites plans to set the price at £1.50 per bar, which undercuts many rivals while remaining profitable. This penetration pricing strategy aims to attract customers quickly and build market share. Place refers to how the product reaches customers. They will sell directly via their website (e-commerce) and through local health food shops (retail). This multi-channel distribution increases convenience for customers. Promotion will be mainly through social media, using Lucas’ expertise. They plan to use Instagram and TikTok to post healthy recipes, behind-the-scenes content and special launch offers to create excitement.

5. Costs, Revenue and Profit |

Understanding costs and revenue is essential for any business. Green Bites expects to sell 1,000 bars per month in the first few months. The variable cost to produce one bar (ingredients, packaging) is £0.80. Variable costs change directly with the number of units produced. Monthly fixed costs, such as website maintenance and insurance, are £200. Fixed costs remain the same regardless of output. We can calculate the total cost per month:

Total Cost = Fixed Cost + (Variable Cost per unit × Quantity) = £200 + (£0.80 × 1,000) = £1,000

If they sell each bar at £1.50, the total revenue for 1,000 bars is:

Total Revenue = Selling Price × Quantity = £1.50 × 1,000 = £1,500

Profit is the difference between total revenue and total costs. Therefore, monthly profit would be £1,500 – £1,000 = £500. This profit can be reinvested in the business or used to repay any loans. Calculating profit helps Mia and Lucas assess whether the business is financially viable. In exam cases, you may need to perform similar calculations and comment on the results.

6. Cash Flow Forecast |

Profit is not the same as cash. A business can be profitable but still run out of cash if money is not available at the right time. A cash flow forecast shows the expected inflows and outflows of cash over a period. Let’s prepare a simple one-month forecast for Green Bites. Inflows include sales revenue of £1,500 and the initial capital of £1,000 from savings. Outflows include start-up equipment £1,200, ingredients £800, fixed costs £200 and packaging £150. Assume all transactions happen in the same month.

Item Cash in (£) Cash out (£)
Owners’ savings 1,000
Sales revenue 1,500
Equipment 1,200
Ingredients 800
Fixed costs 200
Packaging 150
Total 2,500 2,350
Net Cash Flow + £150

Net cash flow is £2,500 – £2,350 = £150. This indicates a small positive cash balance at the end of the month. However, if sales are lower than expected or customers delay payment, the business could face a cash shortage. A case study question might ask you to analyse why cash flow matters and how Green Bites could manage it, for example by delaying payments to suppliers or arranging an overdraft.

7. Sources of Finance |

Start-ups like Green Bites often need external finance to cover initial costs. Mia and Lucas have contributed £1,000 from personal savings (internal finance). They require an additional £1,000. One option is a bank loan, which provides a lump sum that must be repaid with interest over a set period. This is external finance. The advantage is that they retain full ownership, but the disadvantage is the burden of regular repayments and interest cost. Alternatively, they could seek a grant from a small business support scheme or use crowdfunding, where many people contribute small amounts online. In a case study, evaluating the suitability of different finance sources requires weighing up risk, cost and control.

Internal finance is limited to what the owners can provide, while external finance increases financial risk. Green Bites should prepare a strong business plan to improve their chances of securing a loan or investment. Exam questions may ask for recommendations on the best source of finance for a specific business situation, with justification.

8. Stakeholders |

Stakeholders are individuals or groups who have an interest in the activities and success of a business. For Green Bites, internal stakeholders include Mia and Lucas as owners and any future employees. External stakeholders include customers, who want high-quality healthy snacks at a good price; suppliers of organic ingredients, who expect regular orders and prompt payment; the local community, who may benefit from employment or worry about environmental impact; and the bank, if a loan is taken, which will expect repayment with interest. The government is also a stakeholder, collecting taxes and ensuring food safety regulations are met.

Different stakeholders can have conflicting interests. For instance, customers want low prices, but owners need higher prices to generate profit. Employees want higher wages, which may reduce profit. A business must try to balance these interests. In a case study, you might be asked to identify key stakeholders and explain how a business decision could affect them. Always consider the perspective of each group when constructing your analysis.

9. SWOT Analysis | SWOT 分析

SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. It is a tool used to evaluate a business idea. Let’s apply it to Green Bites. Strengths include the founders’ complementary skills (nutrition and marketing), a unique healthy product and a pricing advantage over competitors. Weaknesses could be limited start-up capital, lack of brand recognition and reliance on only two owners, which makes the business vulnerable if one falls ill.

Opportunities are external factors that the business can exploit. Growing demand for healthy snacks, increasing online shopping trends and the possibility of expanding into gyms and cafes are significant opportunities. Threats include established competitors with loyal customers, potential rises in ingredient costs and changes in food labelling regulations. A well-constructed SWOT analysis shows that you can think critically about a case. In answers, link each point directly to evidence from the case, rather than making generic lists.

10. Evaluating Business Success and Recommendations |

Success for Green Bites can be measured in several ways. Financial measures include achieving a target monthly profit of £500 and maintaining a positive cash flow. Non-financial measures might include building a loyal customer base, receiving positive product reviews and achieving a good work–life balance for the founders. In the long term, they might aim to break even quickly and grow the business sustainably. When evaluating a case study, you should always suggest how the business could improve.

Green Bites

For Green Bites, one recommendation is to start small, perhaps selling at local markets first to test demand before scaling up. They should keep detailed financial records and review their cash flow forecast regularly. Another recommendation is to differentiate their product further, for example by offering variety packs or seasonal flavours, to stay ahead of competitors. Finally, considering a limited liability structure in the future could protect their personal assets as the business grows. Always support your recommendations with reasons that relate directly to the case details.
