1. What is a Case Study? |

A philosophical case study is a detailed scenario that raises one or more philosophical problems. Unlike a simple story, it is designed to test our intuitions and force us to examine the principles behind our decisions. For KS3 students, a case study often involves an ethical dilemma, a puzzle about knowledge or a question about identity and reality. The goal is not to find the ‘right’ answer immediately, but to explore different perspectives and justify your reasoning.

When you analyse a case study, you typically follow these steps: identify the core philosophical issue, explain at least two contrasting viewpoints, construct an argument with clear premises and a conclusion, consider possible counterarguments, and finally reach a reasoned judgement. This process turns a messy real?world problem into a structured philosophical enquiry.

2. Case Study 1: The Trolley Problem |

Imagine a runaway trolley is speeding towards five people who are tied to the track. You are standing next to a lever. If you pull the lever, the trolley will switch to a side track, but there is one person tied to that side track. You cannot stop the trolley or untie anyone. The question is: should you pull the lever? This famous thought experiment, introduced by Philippa Foot, exposes a deep tension between two major ethical theories.

Utilitarianism, associated with Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill, says that the morally right action is the one that produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number. From this view, pulling the lever is right because it saves five lives at the cost of one. Deontology, associated with Immanuel Kant, focuses on duties and rules, such as ‘do not kill’. A deontologist might argue that intentionally causing one person’s death is always wrong, even if it saves more lives. Both positions can be justified with reasons.

Let’s lay out the core contrast in a table to help you remember the key differences:

Ethical Theory Action in Trolley Problem Reasoning
Utilitarianism
Pull the lever
Maximises overall happiness; five lives saved outweigh one lost.
Deontology
道义论
Do not pull the lever
It is wrong to use a person merely as a means; killing is intrinsically wrong.

When discussing the Trolley Problem, always ask yourself: which principle matters more – the outcome or the action itself? Your answer reveals your underlying ethical framework.

3. Case Study 2: The Lying Doctor |

A doctor has a patient with a serious illness. The truth is that the treatment is unlikely to work, and the patient is extremely anxious. If the doctor tells the truth, the patient’s anxiety may worsen and harm their health. If the doctor lies and says the outlook is good, the patient might be calmer and perhaps even respond better to treatment. Should the doctor lie? This case highlights the clash between honesty and compassion.

Virtue ethics, inspired by Aristotle, would ask: what would a virtuous person do? A virtuous doctor would balance truthfulness with kindness, perhaps being tactful without outright lying. However, Kant’s deontology would forbid lying under any circumstance, because if lying were a universal law, trust would break down. Meanwhile, a utilitarian might ask: which action produces the greatest overall happiness? If the lie leads to less suffering, it could be justified. As you can see, different theories point to different answers.

When working on this case study, try to step into the shoes of the doctor, the patient and a family member. How does the perspective change the moral weight of lying?

4. Case Study 3: The Ship of Theseus |

The ancient Greek writer Plutarch described a ship that was preserved by the people of Athens for centuries. Over time, every single plank, sail and rope was replaced as it decayed. The question is: after all original parts have been replaced, is it still the same Ship of Theseus? This puzzle explores the concept of identity and what makes an object the same thing over time.

Philosophers have offered different solutions. Some say identity depends on the material stuff: if the matter changes, the object is no longer the same. Others say identity depends on the form or structure: as long as the ship retains its shape and function, it is the same ship. A more radical view is that identity is a matter of spatio?temporal continuity – the gradual replacement allows the ship to persist. This case study is central to the branch of philosophy called metaphysics.

Interestingly, a modern version asks: if we replace every cell in your body over seven years, are you still the same person? This links to the philosophical problem of personal identity, which is often explored in KS3.

5. Case Study 4: Plato’s Cave |

Plato asked us to imagine prisoners who have been chained inside a dark cave since birth. They can only see shadows projected on the wall in front of them, cast by objects passing in front of a fire behind them. The prisoners believe the shadows are the only reality. One day, a prisoner escapes, sees the real world and the sun, and realises the shadows were mere illusions. When he returns to tell the others, they reject his story and think he has gone mad. This allegory is a powerful case study about knowledge, reality and education.

The cave represents the realm of ignorance, while the outside world represents the realm of true knowledge (the Forms, in Plato’s philosophy). The escaped prisoner is like a philosopher who seeks truth beyond appearances. From an epistemological standpoint, the case study prompts us to ask: how do we know what is real? Can we trust our senses? This connects directly to the KS3 topic of knowledge and belief.

When analysing this case, think about modern parallels. Could virtual reality or social media be like the shadows on the cave wall? What might a modern ‘escape’ look like?

6. Case Study 5: Animal Rights |

Consider a cosmetics company that tests its new shampoo on rabbits to ensure it is safe for humans. The tests can cause suffering, but without them some products might harm consumers. Is it morally acceptable to use animals in this way? This case study raises questions about the moral status of animals, the limits of human interests, and whether suffering matters regardless of species.

The philosopher Peter Singer argues that all beings capable of suffering deserve equal consideration of interests. From his utilitarian perspective, ignoring animals’ suffering simply because they are not human is a form of ‘speciesism’, similar to racism or sexism. By contrast, some thinkers claim that humans have a unique moral status because of rationality, autonomous choice or the capacity for moral reflection. Others argue from a virtue ethics perspective that cruel treatment of animals damages our own character.

For your analysis, try to construct an argument both for and against animal testing, using clear premises. Then consider whether alternatives, such as computer modelling, weaken the pro?testing case.

7. How to Analyse a Case Study |

No matter which case study you encounter, a clear method will help you produce a high?quality analysis. Begin by reading the scenario carefully and identifying what philosophical branch is involved: is it ethics (right and wrong), epistemology (knowledge), metaphysics (reality) or another area? Then pinpoint the central question – usually a ‘should’ question or a ‘what is’ question. Write it down in your own words.

Next, brainstorm at least two opposing philosophical positions. For each position, note the key reasons or principles that support it. This is where you bring in the theories you have studied, such as utilitarianism, deontology, virtue ethics, empiricism or rationalism. Avoid simply describing what someone would do; instead explain why their reasoning is valid or persuasive.

After laying out the arguments, consider possible counterarguments. Ask yourself: what would someone who disagrees say? What are the weakest points of each argument? Evaluating your own reasoning in this way shows higher?order thinking and impresses examiners. Finally, offer a balanced conclusion that states your own position, supported by the strongest reasons, while acknowledging alternative views.

8. Building an Argument |

A philosophical argument is not a quarrel; it is a structured set of statements where some (premises) provide support for another (the conclusion). For example: Premise 1 – It is always wrong to cause unnecessary suffering. Premise 2 – Animal testing causes unnecessary suffering. Conclusion – Therefore, animal testing is wrong. The argument is valid if the conclusion follows logically from the premises, and it is sound if the premises are also true.

In case study analysis, you should practise constructing arguments in this format. Often, you will need to add a bridging premise that links a general principle to a specific situation. For instance, a bridging premise might be ‘Cosmetic testing is not medically necessary, so the suffering it causes is avoidable.’ This strengthens the argument and shows deeper understanding.

A common mistake at KS3 level is offering only one premise and jumping to a conclusion. Always aim for at least two premises, and make sure your conclusion directly answers the case study question.

9. Considering Counterarguments |

The strongest philosophical analyses do not ignore objections; they actively seek them out. A counterargument is an objection that could weaken or defeat your argument. For example, if you argue that the doctor should not lie because lying is always wrong, a counterargument could be: ‘In emergency situations, lying can prevent greater harm, so the rule against lying may not be absolute.’ You must then respond to this objection.

To handle counterarguments effectively, you can either show that the objection is based on a misunderstanding or weak premise, or you can concede that the objection has some force but explain why your view still holds on balance. This technique, often called ‘rebuttal’ or ‘refutation’, demonstrates that you have thought critically and are not simply asserting a one?sided view.

When you revise, practise writing a paragraph that starts: ‘Some might argue that… However…’ This simple structure ensures you always include a counterargument and a response.

10. Practice Exercise: Your Own Analysis |

Now it is your turn. Consider this case study: In a small town, a teenager named Alex discovers that a new factory will create hundreds of jobs but will also pollute the river, harming local wildlife and the water supply. The town is struggling with high unemployment. Alex must decide whether to support the factory or campaign against it. Use the method you have learned to analyse this dilemma.

Start by identifying the philosophical issue (clash between economic benefit and environmental ethics). Then formulate arguments for both sides, using ethical theories where possible. Consider a utilitarian argument for the factory (greatest happiness for the greatest number) and a deontological or virtue?based argument against it (duty to protect nature; a virtuous person would not sacrifice the environment for profit). Also, think about the rights of future generations and non?human animals. Finally, present your own reasoned conclusion.

Write your analysis in about 300 words, making sure to include premises, a counterargument and a response. Share it with a classmate or teacher to get feedback. With regular practice, analysing case studies will become second nature.
