Nature: is the source a diary entry, a government report, a cartoon, a photograph? A cartoon is meant to mock, so it exaggerates. Origin: who created it, when and where? A Roman historian writing 200 years after an event relies on older, possibly lost sources. Purpose: why was it made? To persuade, to record officially, to entertain? Propaganda is still useful—it shows what the powerful wanted people to think.

Step 1: select precise detail—population figures from Domesday Book, a quote from a medieval chronicle, a contemporary sketch. Step 2: explain why that detail proves your point, not just describing it. Step 3: form a claim that answers the question directly. If asked about the impact of the Black Death, do not just state ‘wages rose’. Instead: ‘Because the plague killed a large share of labourers, survivors could demand higher pay, which weakened the feudal system.’

The theorem also contains a warning: never leave a quotation to speak for itself. Your job is to unpack it, so the reader sees how you have constructed your argument.

History does not always move at the same speed. Apply the pace-and-pattern index to describe how and why change occurs.
