1. What is Philosophy? |
Philosophy comes from Greek words meaning ‘love of wisdom’. It is the activity of asking fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. Unlike science, which often relies on experiments, philosophy mainly uses logical reasoning and critical thinking to explore these questions.
Philosophy is divided into several major branches. Metaphysics asks ‘what is real?’, epistemology asks ‘how do we know?’, ethics asks ‘how should we live?’, and logic asks ‘how should we reason?’. As a KS3 student, you will be introduced to all these areas.
2. Philosophical vs. Everyday Questions |
Everyday questions like ‘What time is lunch?’ or ‘Where is my book?’ usually have straightforward answers. Philosophical questions, however, are more open-ended and often have no single correct answer. They invite us to reflect on deeper meanings and assumptions.
Examples of philosophical questions include: ‘What is the meaning of life?’, ‘What is justice?’, and ‘Do we have free will?’ These questions are not just for philosophers; they appear in everyday life when we make moral choices or wonder about our place in the universe.
3. Socratic Questioning |
Socrates, who lived in ancient Athens, believed that wisdom begins with recognizing our own ignorance. He developed a method of questioning to help people examine their beliefs and get closer to the truth. This is known as the Socratic method or Socratic questioning.
Typical Socratic questions include: ‘What exactly do you mean by that?’, ‘Can you give me an example?’, and ‘If that is true, what follows from it?’ By challenging assumptions, we can reveal weaknesses in arguments and refine our thinking.
