The CCEA Pre-U Philosophy qualification (often delivered as GCE Religious Studies with a philosophy pathway) requires you to study topics such as philosophical arguments about the existence of God, the problem of evil, ethical theories, and applied ethics. The course is designed to develop both your knowledge of key concepts and your ability to evaluate them critically.

Assessment focuses on two Assessment Objectives: AO1 (Knowledge and Understanding) and AO2 (Critical Analysis and Evaluation). You must demonstrate accurate recall of theories and arguments, but equally important is your capacity to weigh competing viewpoints, identify strengths and weaknesses, and reach a justified conclusion. Familiarising yourself with these objectives now will help you structure your revision and exam answers effectively.

评估重点在两个评估目标:AO1(知识与理解)和 AO2(批判性分析与评价)。

2. What Is Philosophy? Core Questions |

Philosophy, literally ‘love of wisdom’, is the rational and critical inquiry into the most fundamental questions that arise from human experience. Unlike the sciences, which often rely on empirical observation and experimentation, philosophy proceeds primarily by conceptual analysis, logical reasoning, and the examination of presuppositions. At its heart lies a commitment to clarity, coherence, and reasoned justification.

You will encounter enduring questions such as: What does it mean to know something? Do we have free will, or is everything determined? How should we live? What makes an action right or wrong? Can we prove that God exists? By engaging with these questions, you will learn not just what past thinkers have said, but also how to think for yourself with precision and depth.

3. Epistemology: What Can We Know?

Epistemology is the branch of philosophy concerned with the nature, sources, and limits of knowledge. The traditional analysis defines knowledge as justified true belief (JTB): you know that P if you believe P, P is true, and you have adequate justification for believing P. However, Edmund Gettier’s famous counterexamples showed that JTB is not sufficient, sparking a vast debate about what additional conditions might be required.

A central divide in epistemology is between rationalism and empiricism. Rationalists, such as Descartes, argue that reason is the primary source of knowledge and that some ideas are innate. Empiricists, like Locke and Hume, insist that all knowledge ultimately derives from sensory experience. This debate connects directly to questions about scepticism: can we ever be certain that the external world exists, or that our inductive reasoning is reliable?

4. Ethics: How Should We Live? |

Ethics, or moral philosophy, examines what makes actions right or wrong and what constitutes a good life. A foundational theory in your course will be utilitarianism, associated with Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill. It holds that the right action is the one that maximises overall happiness or utility, often summarised as ‘the greatest happiness for the greatest number’.

In stark contrast stands deontological ethics, most famously developed by Immanuel Kant. For Kant, the moral worth of an action lies in its being done from duty, not from inclination or consequences. The categorical imperative demands that we act only according to maxims that we could rationally will to become universal laws, and that we always treat humanity, whether in ourselves or others, as an end in itself and never merely as a means. You will also encounter virtue ethics, natural law theory, and applied topics such as euthanasia and abortion.

5. Philosophy of Mind: Consciousness and Identity |

Philosophy of mind investigates the relationship between the mental and the physical. One key question is the mind-body problem: how do our conscious experiences relate to the biological processes of the brain? Substance dualism, defended by Descartes, claims that mind and body are two fundamentally distinct substances – the mind is non-physical and the body is physical. This view, however, faces the difficult ‘interaction problem’ of explaining how an immaterial mind can cause physical changes.

In response, physicalist theories argue that mental states are ultimately identical to, or entirely dependent on, brain states. These include identity theory and functionalism. Another important topic is personal identity: what makes a person at one time the same person as a person at another time? Is it bodily continuity, psychological connectedness, or something else? These debates challenge our deepest assumptions about selfhood.

6. Philosophy of Religion: Arguments for God’s Existence |

In religious philosophy, you will critically examine arguments for and against the existence of God. The ontological argument, first proposed by Anselm, attempts to deduce God’s existence from the very concept of a ‘being than which nothing greater can be conceived’. Descartes offers a version based on the idea that existence is a perfection. Both face significant objections, notably from Gaunilo and Kant.

The cosmological argument, associated with Aquinas, starts from the fact that the universe exists and argues for a first cause or necessary being. The teleological (design) argument points to the apparent order, purpose, and complexity in the natural world as evidence of an intelligent designer. You will also study the problem of evil: if God is all-powerful and all-good, why does evil exist? This challenge has produced theodicies from thinkers such as Augustine and Irenaeus, which you must learn to evaluate.

7. Logic and Critical Thinking |

Logic provides the essential toolkit for all philosophical reasoning. An argument is not a mere dispute but a structured set of statements where premises are offered to support a conclusion. Deductive arguments aim to guarantee the truth of the conclusion if the premises are true; when they succeed, the argument is valid. If it is valid and its premises are actually true, it is sound.

Inductive arguments, by contrast, provide only probable support for their conclusions. In evaluating arguments, you must learn to detect common fallacies – errors in reasoning that undermine the argument’s logical strength. Examples include ad hominem (attacking the person rather than the argument), false dilemma (presenting only two options when more exist), and begging the question (assuming what you are trying to prove). Mastering these concepts will dramatically improve your essay writing.

8. Key Thinkers You Will Meet |

Throughout your Pre-U course, you will be expected to engage directly with seminal texts and thinkers. Plato’s theory of Forms posits a realm of perfect, unchanging archetypes that are more real than the changing physical world. His student Aristotle developed a contrasting focus on empirical observation, categories, and virtue as a mean between extremes.

René Descartes’ method of radical doubt led him to the famous certainty ‘I think, therefore I am’, laying foundations for modern epistemology. David Hume’s rigorous empiricism took him to sceptical conclusions about causation, the self, and miracles. Immanuel Kant sought to rebut Hume and show how synthetic a priori knowledge is possible. In ethics, in addition to Aristotle and Kant, you will study figures such as Aquinas, Bentham, and Mill, each of whom offers a distinctive framework for moral deliberation.
