本综合指南为教授 Pre-U WJEC 英语课程的教师提供实用教学策略和教案范例。本文汲取当前教学研究成果,紧扣 WJEC 考试大纲的具体要求,旨在为教师提供有效方法,以培养学生的批判性阅读、分析性写作和独立学习能力。建议涵盖诗歌、散文、戏剧和陌生文本等关键单元,着重培养原创性解读和考试自信心。
1. Understanding the Pre-U WJEC English Framework | 理解 Pre-U WJEC 英语课程框架
A successful Pre-U English course begins with a deep understanding of the assessment objectives and the syllabus structure. The WJEC Pre-U English qualification is designed to bridge the gap between secondary education and university-level literary study. It encourages independent thought, wider reading, and sophisticated argumentation. Teachers must familiarise themselves with the four components: Poetry and Prose (exam), Drama (exam), Unseen Texts (exam), and the Personal Investigation (coursework). Each component demands a different set of skills, and the weighting of assessment objectives – such as AO1 (articulate informed, personal responses), AO2 (analyse ways in which meanings are shaped), AO3 (demonstrate understanding of context), and AO4 (explore connections and comparisons) – varies across papers.
成功的 Pre-U 英语课程始于对评估目标和课程结构的深刻理解。WJEC Pre-U 英语资格旨在弥合中等教育与大学水平文学研究之间的差距。它鼓励独立思考、广泛阅读和精密的论证。教师必须熟悉四个组成部分:诗歌与散文(考试)、戏剧(考试)、陌生文本(考试)和个人探究(课程作业)。每个组成部分需要不同的技能组合,而评估目标——如 AO1(清晰表达有见地的个人反应)、AO2(分析意义形成的方式)、AO3(展示对语境的理解)和 AO4(探索联系与比较)——在各试卷中的权重各不相同。
Teachers should create a curriculum map that sequences the teaching of texts and skills across the two-year course. Begin with a transition unit that revisits GCSE analytical skills while introducing the higher expectations of Pre-U, such as the need to engage with multiple critical viewpoints and to build sustained arguments. Early diagnostic assessments can help identify students’ strengths and weaknesses in areas like close reading, use of terminology, and essay structure. Regular formative tasks should be designed to gradually increase in complexity, moving from guided analysis to fully independent interpretation.
教师应创建一个课程地图,对两年课程中的文本和技能教学进行排序。从一个过渡单元开始,复习 GCSE 的分析技能,同时引入 Pre-U 更高的要求,如需要接触多种批评观点并构建持续论证。早期诊断性评估有助于识别学生在细读、术语使用和论文结构等方面的优势与不足。应设计定期的形成性任务,逐步增加复杂度,从指导性分析过渡到完全独立的解读。
2. Fostering Critical Reading of Poetry | 培养诗歌的批判性阅读
Poetry in the Pre-U WJEC exam often requires students to compare a named poem from a set anthology with an unseen poem. Start by teaching students to annotate efficiently, focusing on how formal elements – such as metre, rhyme scheme, enjambment, and stanza structure – contribute to meaning. Encourage them to avoid simple ‘feature spotting’ and instead ask “why this form for this content?” Provide a glossary of poetic terms with examples, but emphasise that terminology is only a tool, not an end in itself. Model the process of moving from initial impression to a thesis statement that addresses the poet’s methods and thematic concerns.
A highly effective lesson structure involves a three-stage approach: Stage 1 – ‘First Reading’: students record immediate responses and questions without any prompt, fostering genuine personal engagement (AO1). Stage 2 – ‘Guided Delving’: using targeted questions, the teacher helps students unravel layers of imagery, sound patterning, and structure. Stage 3 – ‘Synthesising’: students draft a concise paragraph that integrates their analysis into a coherent argument. For comparative work, use Venn diagrams initially, then teach students to write integrated paragraphs that move between texts rather than treating them separately.
一种高效的教学结构采用三阶段方法:第一阶段——“初读”:学生记录即时反应和疑问,不受任何提示,培养真实的个人参与(AO1)。第二阶段——“引导深挖”:教师使用针对性的问题帮助学生解构意象、韵律模式和结构的层次。第三阶段——“综合”:学生撰写一个简洁的段落,将分析整合为连贯的论证。对于比较作业,最初使用文氏图,然后教导学生写出融合的段落,在文本之间来回讨论,而非分别论述。
| Stage | Activity | AO Focus |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | First responses – What strikes you? What puzzles you? | AO1 |
| 2 | Analytical questions on voice, sound, imagery | AO2 |
| 3 | Drafting an interpretive argument | AO1, AO2 |
3. Teaching Prose: Depth and Critical Perspectives | 教授散文:深度与批评视角
The prose component typically involves study of a novel or short stories, with an emphasis on narrative methods and contextual influences. Students must move beyond plot summary to explore how narrative voice, structure, time shifts, and focalisation shape reader response. A useful approach is to introduce key narratological concepts early: distinction between story (fabula) and plot (sjuzhet), types of narrator (reliable/unreliable, first-person objective/subjective), and free indirect discourse. Select passages that illustrate these concepts vividly and have students rewrite short extracts from a different narrative perspective to understand how meaning changes.
Contextual study (AO3) should be integrated, not bolted on. For a text like Wuthering Heights, instead of presenting a separate ‘context lesson’ on Victorian society, embed contextual discussion within analysis of the text itself. For example, when studying Heathcliff’s ambiguous social status, discuss contemporary anxieties about race, empire, and class mobility. Use extracts from contemporary reviews, letters, or related non-literary material to enrich understanding. Encourage students to see context not as a fixed background but as a dynamic force that both shapes and is shaped by the text. A comparison with a later reinterpretation or adaptation can also illuminate changing contexts.
4. Engaging with Drama: Performance and Text | 接触戏剧:表演与文本
Drama is literature intended for performance, and the WJEC Pre-U expects students to analyse both the textual evidence and the possibilities of staging. Begin with a series of workshops where students physically explore scenes, experimenting with blocking, gesture, tone, and pace. This embodied learning helps them realise that stage directions, punctuation, and dialogue rhythms carry explicit performative instructions. After each practical exploration, return to the script and write analytical notes on how specific performance choices generate particular interpretations.
戏剧是用于表演的文学,WJEC Pre-U 期望学生既分析文本证据,也分析舞台演出的可能性。从一系列工作坊开始,让学生实地探索场景,尝试舞台调度、手势、语调和节奏。这种具身学习帮助他们认识到舞台指示、标点和对话节奏承载着明确的表演指令。每次实践探索后,回归剧本,就特定的表演选择如何产生特定的解读撰写分析笔记。
When studying Shakespeare, pay close attention to the use of prose, blank verse, and rhyme, as well as variations within the iambic pentameter. Provide students with an edited scene where line breaks are removed, and ask them to re-punctuate and decide where characters pause or interrupt, justifying their choices. This deepens their appreciation of how meaning is constructed at the level of the line. For modern drama, analyse the subtext and the significance of pauses, silences, and non-verbal communication. Encourage students to imagine at least two contrasting directorial interpretations of the same scene and to evaluate their effects.
学习莎士比亚时,密切关注散文、无韵诗和押韵的使用,以及抑扬格五音步内的变异。给学生提供一个删除了换行符的编辑版场景,要求他们重新标点并决定人物在何处停顿或打断,并论证他们的选择。这加深了他们对意义如何在行层面构建的理解。对于现代戏剧,分析潜台词以及停顿、沉默和非语言交流的重要性。鼓励学生设想同一场景至少两种截然不同的导演阐释并评估其效果。
5. Unseen Texts: Building a Repertoire of Skills | 陌生文本:构建技能库
The unseen texts paper is often the most daunting for students because it removes the safety net of prepared material. The key is to build a flexible, transferable toolkit. Teach students a systematic approach: first, identify genre, mode, and broad purpose; second, conduct a stylistic analysis of diction, syntax, figurative language, and tone; third, consider possible contexts of production and reception; and fourth, formulate a central argument about the text’s intended effect or meaning. This process should be practised weekly with short extracts from a wide range of periods and genres – from 17th-century religious poetry to contemporary blog posts – to develop agility.
Model how to write under timed conditions by thinking aloud. Show how you select the most telling details for analysis and how you build a paragraph around a single, clear point. Use comparative unseen exercises regularly: two poems on a similar theme, two narrative openings, or a literary text alongside a non-literary one. This refines students’ ability to perceive subtle differences and to structure a comparative argument. A popular classroom activity is ‘speed dating’ with texts, where students have five minutes to annotate and then pass the extract along, forcing quick initial responses.
通过出声思考示范如何在限时条件下写作。展示你如何选择最具表现力的细节进行分析,以及如何围绕一个清晰的观点构建段落。定期进行比较性陌生文本练习:两首主题相似的诗歌、两个叙事开头,或一篇文学文本与一篇非文学文本并列。这提高了学生察觉细微差别并构建比较性论证的能力。一种受欢迎的课堂活动是文本“快速约会”,学生有五分钟时间注释然后传递摘录,强制进行快速的初始反应。
6. The Personal Investigation: Guiding Independent Research | 个人探究:指导独立研究
The Personal Investigation (coursework) is a distinguishing feature of the Pre-U qualification. Worth 20% of the total marks, it allows students to pursue a topic of their own choice, producing a 3000̵3500-word comparative essay. The teacher’s role is to act as a supervisor: helping students refine a viable research question, directing them to appropriate primary and secondary sources, and providing feedback on plans and drafts within the guidelines. The most successful investigations often stem from a genuine curiosity sparked by a text studied in class, but then extend into uncharted territory. Encourage students to consider less obvious pairings and to focus on a specific, contestable thesis.
Structure the process with interim deadlines: proposal (with three annotated sources), detailed plan, first draft, and final submission. Teach academic research skills explicitly: how to use library databases, how to evaluate the credibility of online sources, and how to integrate criticism smoothly into their own argument. A lesson on ‘entering the academic conversation’ can demonstrate how to position their voice in relation to existing criticism, using phrases like ‘While critic X argues…, I suggest that…’. Emphasise that the investigation is not a report but a substantiated argument, and that the comparison should illuminate both texts in original ways.
Many students arrive with a rigid PEE (Point, Evidence, Explanation) paragraph structure that limits the flow of complex ideas. Pre-U requires a more flexible, argument-driven approach. Teach students to craft argumentative topic sentences that make a claim about the text, then to embed quotations seamlessly within their own syntax, and to develop multiple layers of analysis that connect back to the thesis. Model the difference between a listing paragraph and a developing analysis by showing two versions of the same paragraph and discussing which is more effective and why.
许多学生入学时带着僵化的 PEE(观点、证据、解释)段落结构,限制了复杂思想的流动。Pre-U 要求一种更灵活、以论证驱动的方法。教导学生打造论证性的主题句,对文本提出主张,然后将引文无缝嵌入自己的句法,并展开多层分析,回扣论点。通过展示同一段落的两个版本来示范罗列式段落与发展性分析之间的区别,讨论哪个更有效及其原因。
Introduce academic discourse markers and metadiscourse that help structure a nuanced argument: ‘Furthermore’, ‘Conversely’, ‘It might be argued’, ‘Underlying this is…’. However, warn against overuse. A powerful technique is the ‘Idea – Zoom – Zoom Out’ method: start with a broad idea, zoom in to close textual analysis, then zoom out to explain the larger significance. For comparative writing, teach connective comparative phrases: ‘Whereas text A presents…, text B subverts this by…’. Regular timed writing under exam conditions, followed by peer assessment using a simplified version of the mark scheme, helps students internalise the standards.
8. Building a Critical Vocabulary and Wider Reading | 建立批评词汇与广泛阅读
To access the highest marks, students need a critical vocabulary that extends beyond the basics of simile and metaphor. Introduce terms such as ‘polyphony’, ‘diegetic/mimetic’, ‘deixis’, ‘synecdoche’, and ‘polysemy’ in context, ensuring they understand them as interpretive lenses rather than decorative labels. Create a collaborative digital glossary where students can add new terms with definitions and examples from texts they encounter. Regularly set short reading assignments from literary criticism (e.g., an accessible essay by Terry Eagleton or a chapter from a Cambridge Companion) and ask students to summarise the critic’s argument and respond to it in a short paragraph.
Wider reading is not an optional extra; it is essential for contextual understanding and for developing comparative skills. Compile a list of texts – novels, plays, poetry collections – that resonate thematically with the set texts but are from different periods or traditions. For example, if teaching Hamlet, suggest reading Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead and an essay on revenge tragedy conventions. Students should maintain a reading journal where they record connections, questions, and personal responses. This journal can become a rich resource for revision and for generating ideas for the Personal Investigation.
9. Formative Assessment and Feedback Strategies | 形成性评估与反馈策略
Effective feedback is the engine of improvement in Pre-U English. Instead of simply grading every essay with a mark, adopt a more targeted approach. For each assignment, focus on one or two specific skills (e.g., ’embedding quotations seamlessly’ or ‘using context to illuminate the text’) and provide feedback that addresses these. Use the ‘highlight, prompt, model’ method: highlight the area for improvement, provide a prompt question to guide thinking, and offer a short modelled example. Ensure that students then act on the feedback by redrafting a section, not the whole essay, which makes improvement manageable and visible.
有效的反馈是 Pre-U 英语进步的引擎。与其简单地给每篇论文打分,不如采用更有针对性的方法。对于每项作业,专注于一到两项特定技能(例如,“无缝嵌入引文”或“利用语境阐明文本”),并提供针对这些技能的反馈。使用“高亮、提示、示范”方法:高亮需要改进之处,提供引导思考的提示问题,并给出简短的示范例子。确保学生随后就反馈采取行动,重写一个部分而非整篇论文,这样改进既可控又可见。
Peer assessment, when properly structured, is highly valuable. Train students to use a simplified mark scheme in pairs, requiring them to identify strengths and offer one constructive suggestion. This not only lightens the teacher’s marking load but also develops students’ evaluative judgement. Regular low-stakes testing, such as short quotation identification or terminology quizzes, helps consolidate knowledge. Cumulative ‘learning portfolios’ that include drafts, feedback, and reflections on progress encourage metacognition and allow students to track their own development.
同伴互评,如果适当结构化,是非常有价值的。训练学生成对使用简化的评分方案,要求他们识别优点并提出一条建设性建议。这不仅减轻了教师的批改负担,还发展了学生的评价判断力。定期的低风险测试,如简短的引文识别或术语小考,有助于巩固知识。包含草稿、反馈和进步反思的累积式“学习档案袋”鼓励元认知,并让学生追踪自己的发展。
10. Revision Techniques for Pre-U English | Pre-U 英语复习技巧
Revision should be an active process of reconstruction, not passive reading. Encourage students to create mind maps that connect themes, characters, and motifs across texts. For each set text, they should prepare a condensed one-page summary with key themes, critical quotes, contextual pivots, and potential links to other texts. Use the ‘teach a topic’ method: assign pairs different themes and ask them to prepare and deliver a 10-minute revision lesson to the class, which forces them to organise their knowledge and anticipate questions.
复习应是一个积极的重构过程,而非被动的阅读。鼓励学生创建连接跨文本主题、人物和母题的思维导图。对于每个固定文本,他们应准备一页浓缩的总结,包含关键主题、批评引文、语境转折,以及与其他文本的潜在联系。使用“教授一个专题”的方法:分配每对不同主题,要求他们准备并向全班讲授一节 10 分钟的复习课,这迫使他们组织知识并预测问题。
Timed essay practice is essential, but vary the format. Sometimes, give students the question in advance and ask them to bring in a plan and one opening paragraph; other times, give an unseen question under strict exam conditions. After each practice, hold a ‘post-mortem’ where common errors are discussed anonymously and exemplar student paragraphs are analysed. Use the mark scheme to unpick what distinguishes a Band 4 essay from a Band 2 essay. In the final weeks, shift the focus from covering new material to consolidating existing knowledge and practising the cognitive skills of comparison and evaluation under pressure.
限时论文练习至关重要,但要变化形式。有时提前给出问题,要求学生带来一个计划和开头段落;其他时候则在严格的考试条件下给出陌生问题。每次练习后,进行一次“事后分析”,匿名讨论常见错误并分析学生范文段落。使用评分方案剖析区分第四等级论文与第二等级论文的关键。在最后几周,将重点从覆盖新材料转移到巩固现有知识和练习在压力下进行比较与评价的认知技能。
11. Differentiating Instruction for Mixed-ability Groups | 针对混合能力组的分层教学
Pre-U classes often contain a wide spread of ability, from students who will achieve A* equivalents to those who find the step up challenging. Differentiation does not mean creating different tasks for different students; it means scaffolding the same task so that all can access it at an appropriate depth. Use tiered questioning: for a single passage, pose literal comprehension questions, analytical questions requiring interpretation, and evaluative questions requiring critical engagement with scholarly views. Allow students to choose their starting point or direct them accordingly.
Pre-U 班级通常能力跨度广泛,从将取得 A* 水平的学生,到感到进阶吃力的学生。分层教学并不意味着为不同学生创建不同的任务;它意味着为同一任务提供支架,使所有学生都能在适当的深度上参与。使用分层提问:对于同一段落,提出字面理解问题、需要解读的分析性问题,以及需要批判性参与学术观点的评价性问题。允许学生选择他们的起点,或相应地引导他们。
Provide writing frames for students who struggle with essay structure, but gradually remove the supports. The frame might include sentence starters for topic sentences and linking phrases, which over time are replaced by a simple checklist. Challenge the most able by asking them to engage with a critical essay and to incorporate a counterargument from that critic into their own writing. Pair up students of different abilities for focused peer discussion: the more proficient student can articulate complex ideas, while the other can ask clarifying questions, benefiting both.
为论文结构有困难的学生提供写作框架,但逐渐移除支持。框架可包括主题句和连接短语的开头句,随着时间的推移,替换为一份简单的清单。挑战最有能力的学生,要求他们阅读一篇批评论文,并将该评论家的反驳论点融入自己的写作。将不同能力的学生配对进行有针对性的同伴讨论:更熟练的学生可以阐述复杂的观点,而另一位可以提出澄清性问题,双方都受益。
12. Sample Lesson Plan: Comparing Unseen Poems | 教案范例:比较陌生诗歌
Lesson Duration: 60 minutes
Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to annotate two unseen poems focusing on how form shapes meaning, and to draft a comparative thesis statement.
Materials: Copies of two poems (e.g., ‘Ozymandias’ by Shelley and a contemporary poem on a similar theme of transience), A3 paper, coloured pens.
课时:60 分钟
目标:到本课结束时,学生将能够对两首陌生诗歌进行注释,关注形式如何塑造意义,并起草一个比较性论点陈述。
材料:两首诗的复印件(如雪莱的《奥西曼迭斯》和一首关于变迁主题的当代诗歌)、A3 纸、彩色笔。
Starter (5 mins): Display the title ‘Ozymandias’ and ask students to predict what the poem might be about. Discuss predictions. This activates prior knowledge and engages curiosity.
导入(5 分钟):展示标题“奥西曼迭斯”,让学生预测诗歌可能关于什么。讨论预测。这激活了先备知识并引发好奇心。
Main Activity Part 1 – Annotation (15 mins): Hand out Poem 1. Students read silently, then in pairs annotate using the ‘What? How? Why?’ framework: What is the poem saying? How does the poet use form and language? Why might the poet have made these choices? Circulate and prompt with questions about the sonnet form, the framing narrative, and the irony.
主要活动第一部分——注释(15 分钟):分发诗歌 1。学生默读,然后两人一组使用“什么?如何?为何?”框架进行注释:诗歌讲什么?诗人如何运用形式和语言?诗人为何作出这些选择?巡视并用关于十四行诗形式、框架叙述和反讽的问题进行提示。
Main Activity Part 2 – Comparison (20 mins): Distribute Poem 2. On A3 paper, students create a double-bubble map with the poems in the centre. They note similarities (connected bubbles) and differences (outer bubbles). Then they draft a single sentence that captures the most significant comparative insight, e.g., ‘While both poems meditate on the impermanence of power, Shelley uses a distanced, ironic frame to undermine the pharaoh’s boast, whereas [Contemporary Poem] employs a direct lyric voice to mourn personal loss.’
主要活动第二部分——比较(20 分钟):分发诗歌 2。在 A3 纸上,学生创建一个以两首诗为中心的双泡图。他们记录相似之处(连接的气泡)和不同之处(外部气泡)。然后他们起草一个句子,捕捉最有意义的比较性洞见,例如:“虽然两首诗都沉思权力的无常,雪莱使用一个疏离的、反讽的框架来削弱法老的自夸,而 [当代诗歌] 则采用直接的抒情声音哀悼个人的失落。”
Plenary (10 mins): Selected students share their thesis statements. Class feedback using two stars and a wish. Teacher clarifies any misconceptions about the sonnet form or comparative phrasing. Collect the A3 sheets as a formative assessment to inform next lesson’s planning.
总结(10 分钟):选学生分享他们的论点陈述。全班使用“两颗星和一个愿望”进行反馈。教师澄清任何关于十四行诗形式或比较性措辞的误解。收集 A3 纸作为形成性评估,为下一课的计划提供信息。
