📚 Other Contemporary Urban Environmental Issues |

As urbanisation accelerates globally, cities face a multitude of environmental challenges beyond the well-known problems of air and water pollution. These contemporary urban environmental issues, such as the urban heat island effect, light pollution, noise pollution, urban flooding, solid waste generation, electronic waste, urban sprawl, soil degradation, loss of green spaces, traffic congestion, and water scarcity, all threaten the sustainability and liveability of urban areas. This article explores these interconnected issues, their causes, impacts, and possible mitigation strategies, providing a comprehensive overview for A-Level Environmental Science students.

1. Urban Heat Island Effect |

The urban heat island (UHI) effect describes the phenomenon where urban areas experience significantly higher temperatures than their surrounding rural areas. This is primarily due to the high thermal capacity of building materials like concrete and asphalt, which absorb and retain heat during the day and release it slowly at night. Additionally, waste heat from vehicles, air conditioning units, and industrial processes contributes to elevated temperatures. The lack of vegetation reduces evaporative cooling, and the geometry of tall buildings can trap heat, reducing air flow. The temperature difference (Delta;T) can be as high as 10-12 degree;C on calm, clear nights. Consequences include increased energy demand for cooling, elevated emissions of air pollutants and greenhouse gases, heat-related illnesses, and amplification of heatwaves.

Mitigation strategies include increasing urban vegetation through parks, green roofs, and street trees to enhance evapotranspiration and shading. The use of cool pavements and reflective roofing materials with high albedo can reduce heat absorption. Urban planning that promotes building orientation to maximise natural ventilation and the adoption of green infrastructure help lower ambient temperatures and improve resilience.

2. Light Pollution | 光污染

Light pollution results from excessive, misdirected, or intrusive artificial lighting in urban areas. It manifests as sky glow, glare, and light trespass. This disrupts astronomical observations and has severe ecological consequences, such as disorienting nocturnally migrating birds, affecting sea turtle hatchling navigation, and causing declines in insect populations attracted to artificial lights. In humans, artificial light at night suppresses melatonin production, disrupting circadian rhythms and potentially increasing the risk of sleep disorders and certain cancers.

Effective strategies to reduce light pollution include using fully shielded luminaires that direct light downward, lowering illumination levels to the necessary minimum, employing warmer colour temperatures (e.g., <3000 K), and implementing timers or motion sensors to switch off lights when not needed. Many cities are now adopting 'dark sky' policies to preserve the night environment.

3. Noise Pollution |

Noise pollution, often measured in A-weighted decibels (dB(A)), is a pervasive urban issue arising from road traffic, railways, aircraft, construction activities, and industrial operations. Prolonged exposure to levels above 55 dB(A) outdoors can cause annoyance, sleep disturbance, and cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension. High noise levels (>85 dB(A)) can lead to permanent hearing damage. The World Health Organization identifies environmental noise as a significant public health risk. Wildlife is also affected, with noise masking animal communication, impairing predator-prey relationships, and reducing usable habitat.

Common urban noise sources and their typical sound levels are shown below:

Noise Source Sound Level (dB(A)) 噪声源 声级 (dB(A))
Quiet bedroom 30
Normal conversation 60
Heavy traffic 80-85
Motorcycle/lawnmower 90

Mitigation measures for urban noise include acoustic barriers along roads, low-noise road surfaces, building sound insulation, speed limit enforcement, green buffer zones of vegetation, and careful land-use planning to separate noisy activities from sensitive receptors. The EU Environmental Noise Directive requires cities to monitor and develop action plans to reduce noise exposure.

4. Urban Flooding and Impermeable Surfaces |

Urbanisation greatly increases the proportion of impermeable surfaces such as roofs, roads, and pavements, reducing infiltration and increasing surface runoff. The runoff coefficient (C), which indicates the fraction of rainfall that becomes runoff, can rise from 0.1-0.2 in natural vegetated landscapes to over 0.9 in densely built-up districts. This leads to higher peak flows and flash floods, often overwhelming conventional drainage systems. Climate change exacerbates the problem by intensifying short-duration, high-intensity rainfall events. Consequences include property damage, combined sewer overflow (CSO) events that discharge untreated sewage into water bodies, and surface water pollution from road contaminants.

Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) offer a more resilient approach by mimicking natural hydrological processes. SuDS components include:

  • Permeable pavements that allow infiltration
  • Soakaways and infiltration trenches
  • Rain gardens and swales
  • Green roofs that retain rainfall
  • Detention basins and ponds for temporary storage

These features reduce and slow runoff, improve water quality, and provide amenity and biodiversity co-benefits.

5. Urban Solid Waste Management |

Municipal solid waste (MSW) generation is a direct consequence of urban consumption patterns. In many cities, waste is composed of organic matter, paper, plastics, glass, metals, and a growing fraction of composite and hazardous materials. Landfilling, though still common, poses environmental risks through leachate contamination of groundwater and the emission of methane (CH₄), a greenhouse gas 25 times more potent than CO₂ over 100 years. Incineration reduces waste volume but can release dioxins and fly ash if not properly controlled. The waste hierarchy prioritises prevention, followed by reuse, recycling, energy recovery, and finally safe disposal.

  • Prevention: reducing consumption and designing out waste
  • Reuse: repairing and refurbishing items
  • Recycling: converting materials into new products
  • Energy recovery: anaerobic digestion or incineration with energy generation
  • Disposal: landfilling as a last resort

Many municipalities now adopt integrated waste management systems combining source separation, kerbside recycling, composting, and thermal treatment to divert waste from landfills and move toward a circular economy.

6. Electronic Waste: A Contemporary Urban Issue |

Electronic waste (e-waste) is one of the fastest-growing waste streams in the world, fuelled by the short lifespans of consumer electronics and rapid technological advancement. E-waste encompasses discarded devices such as smartphones, computers, televisions, and household appliances. It contains hazardous substances including lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), brominated flame retardants (BFRs), and phthalates, which can leach into soil and water or be released as toxic fumes during informal recycling. In many developing countries, unregulated e-waste processing causes severe environmental contamination and health problems for workers and nearby communities.

Solutions involve extended producer responsibility (EPR) schemes, where manufacturers are held accountable for the entire life cycle of their products, including take-back and recycling. Designing for durability, repairability, and ease of recycling is essential. Formal recycling systems can recover valuable materials such as gold, silver, copper, and rare earth metals, reducing the need for primary mining. The Basel Convention regulates the transboundary movement of hazardous e-waste to prevent illegal dumping in less developed regions.

7. Urban Sprawl and Habitat Loss |

Urban sprawl is the low-density, unplanned outward expansion of urban areas, often characterised by car-dependent suburbs, single-use zoning, and the consumption of agricultural and natural lands. This process fragments ecosystems, reduces biodiversity, and destroys the habitats of numerous species. It also increases vehicle kilometres travelled, thereby raising emissions of greenhouse gases and local air pollutants. Sprawl requires costly extensions of infrastructure such as roads, water supply, and sewage networks, placing a financial burden on communities. The ecological footprint of sprawling cities is disproportionately large compared to compact urban forms.
