CIE AS Sociology Syllabus and Exam Points Guide — CIE AS

1. CIE AS 社会学考试结构:Paper 1 与 Paper 2 的考查方式 | CIE AS Sociology Exam Structure: What Paper 1 and Paper 2 Assess

The Cambridge International AS Level Sociology (syllabus code 9699) is a popular humanities subject for students in many international schools across China. The AS qualification is assessed through two papers, each worth 60 marks and lasting 1 hour 30 minutes, with each paper contributing 50% of the AS total.

Paper 1 is officially titled Socialisation, Identity and Methods of Research. It tests students’ understanding of the socialisation process, concepts of culture and identity, and their grasp of sociological research methods. Paper 2 is officially titled The Family. It examines the main theoretical perspectives on the family, family change, and family diversity.

如果继续读完 A Level 的全部课程,学生还需要在 A2 阶段完成另外两张试卷:Paper 3 考查全球化、媒体与宗教(Globalisation, Media and Religion),Paper 4 考查犯罪与越轨(Crime and Deviance)。

Students who continue to the full A Level must complete two further papers at A2: Paper 3 on Globalisation, Media and Religion, and Paper 4 on Crime and Deviance. Together, the four papers make up the complete A Level qualification. This article focuses on the two AS papers, breaking down the syllabus content and examination requirements in detail.

2. Paper 1 核心考点一:社会化 – 初级社会化与次级社会化的机制 | Key Topic 1: Socialisation – Mechanisms of Primary and Secondary Socialisation

Socialisation is the most fundamental concept in sociology and appears in almost every Paper 1. Socialisation refers to the process by which individuals learn the culture, norms and values of the society in which they live, thereby becoming members of that society. It answers a fundamental question: how does a biological human being become a social human being?

Primary socialisation takes place in early childhood and is carried out mainly by the family. Within the family, children learn language, basic manners, gender roles and their earliest moral ideas. Parsons argued that the family acts as a “personality stabiliser”, where children internalise emotional attachments and basic values, forming the foundation for all later social learning.

Secondary socialisation occurs after early childhood and is carried out by institutions including schools, peer groups, the mass media and the workplace. Schools do not only transmit knowledge; through the timetable and daily discipline they also convey the “hidden curriculum”, such as punctuality, obedience to authority and competitiveness. Peer groups influence teenagers’ consumption habits, clothing styles and language.

Students also need to master the “nature versus nurture” debate. Sociologists who favour nurture argue that human behaviour is shaped mainly by the social environment. Famous “feral child” cases, such as Victor of Aveyron in early 19th century France, show that children raised outside human society barely acquire normal language or social skills, providing evidence for the decisive role of socialisation. In examinations, students are often asked to explain the distinct roles of the four main agencies of socialisation: the family, the school, the media and the peer group.

Culture is the sum of the beliefs, customs, arts, language and ways of life shared by members of a society. Culture stands in contrast to biological instinct: animals survive through instinct, whereas humans survive through learned culture. A common distinction in examinations is between material culture (buildings, clothing, tools) and non-material culture (beliefs, language, values).

Norms are rules that guide behaviour in specific situations, such as raising a hand to speak in class or facing the door in a lift. Values are more abstract and enduring beliefs, such as the importance of success, equality or family. Norms are values expressed in concrete situations: because society values education (a value), students must hand in homework on time (a norm).

A role is the set of behavioural expectations attached to a particular status. For example, “teacher” is a status, and the corresponding role includes giving lessons, marking work and maintaining classroom order. Sociologists emphasise role conflict: one person occupies several roles at once, such as “mother”, “employee” and “student”, and the demands of these roles can contradict one another. Status is divided into ascribed status (such as gender or class at birth) and achieved status (such as educational qualifications or occupation).

The culture topic also commonly tests types of culture: dominant culture, subculture (such as youth subcultures or football fan culture), high culture (classical music, opera) and popular culture (pop music, short videos). Candidates should be able to give examples of each type and explain the relationship between subcultures and the dominant culture.

Identity answers the question “who am I?”. Sociologists argue that identity is not innate but is constructed through socialisation and interaction with others. Every person simultaneously holds several identities: gender identity, class identity, ethnic identity, national identity, age identity and more. These identities overlap to form “multiple identities”.

Gender identity is a key exam topic. Sociologists distinguish between sex (biological characteristics) and gender (a social construction reinforced through family upbringing, schooling, media images and peer pressure). For example, boys are encouraged to be brave and tough while girls are encouraged to be gentle and caring; these expectations are passed on through “gender socialisation” from generation to generation.

Class identity is linked to occupation, income and education, shaping a person’s lifestyle, consumption choices and social networks. Ethnic and national identity derives from shared ancestry, language, religion or historical memory. Second-generation migrants often experience the tension of a “dual identity”: maintaining their parents’ ethnic culture while integrating into the mainstream culture of their country of residence.

Tajfel’s social identity theory is a high-frequency topic: people build self-esteem by categorising themselves into an in-group and comparing it with out-groups. This explains nationalism, football fan loyalty and school cliques. In essays, use concrete examples to show how identity shapes behaviour, such as “as a member of the basketball team, he gave up personal statistics for the team’s victory”.

5. Paper 1 核心考点四:研究方法 – 问卷、访谈与观察的优缺点 | Key Topic 4: Methods of Research – Questionnaires, Interviews and Observation

Methods of research carry significant weight in Paper 1, often appearing as “compare the strengths and limitations of two methods” or “choose the most suitable method for a given research question”. The questionnaire is the most common quantitative method: standardised questions are administered to large samples, answers are easy to code and count, reliability is high, and it suits questions about distributions of attitudes or behaviour, that is, questions of “what”.

But questionnaires have clear limitations: closed questions limit the depth of answers, response rates may be low, the researcher cannot probe further, and answers can be superficial or dishonest (for example lies about sensitive topics), so validity suffers. Interviews are divided into structured, semi-structured and unstructured types: the looser the structure, the deeper and more authentic the data, but the smaller the sample and the harder the comparison.

Observation is divided into participant and non-participant forms, and participant observation may be overt or covert. Covert participant observation yields the most authentic “insider” perspective, for example a researcher pretending to join a gang in order to study its internal rules, but it raises ethical problems such as deception and lack of informed consent, and the results are difficult to replicate.

Experiments are rarely used in sociology: laboratory experiments control variables but are artificial and often use student samples, giving low external validity; field experiments run in real settings, such as Rosenthal’s “Pygmalion effect” study, but have weak control and raise ethical concerns. Official statistics (such as divorce rates and crime rates) and documents (diaries, letters, government reports) are also examined frequently: the former are reliable but affected by definitions and recording practices, while the latter have high validity but carry the author’s subjective bias.

Quality Criteria in Research: Reliability, Validity, Representativeness and Generalisability

Sociologists use four core criteria to judge the quality of a research method. Reliability refers to repeatability: if another researcher using the same method reaches the same conclusions, reliability is high. Questionnaires and official statistics are usually highly reliable because they are standardised and replicable.

Validity refers to whether the research actually measures what it claims to measure and reflects real life. In-depth interviews and participant observation usually have high validity because they capture authentic, rich behaviour and meaning. Reliability and validity often pull in opposite directions: pursuing standardisation sacrifices depth, while pursuing authenticity sacrifices replicability. Good answers explicitly explain this trade-off.

Representativeness asks whether the sample stands for the wider population, for example research on “Chinese high school students” cannot rely only on students from one elite school in Shanghai. Generalisability asks whether conclusions drawn from a sample can be extended to a larger population. Sampling methods directly determine representativeness and generalisability: random sampling gives every person in the population an equal chance of selection and is theoretically the most representative, while opportunity sampling (such as surveying one’s own friends) saves time and money but is poorly representative.

Other sampling methods include: systematic sampling (selecting at fixed intervals), stratified sampling (selecting proportionally from each stratum of the population), quota sampling (filling quotas for each type of person) and snowball sampling (respondents introduce further respondents, useful for hidden groups such as drug users or undocumented migrants). Examinations often ask candidates to “choose a sampling method for a specific research question and justify the choice”; answers must tie the method to the research question rather than discuss methods in general.

Sampling and Ethical Issues: From Random Sampling to Informed Consent

Ethics is a compulsory dimension of the methods topic. The ethical guidelines published by the British Sociological Association (BSA) require researchers to follow several core principles: informed consent, meaning participants fully understand the purpose of the research and take part voluntarily; privacy and anonymity, meaning participants’ identities must not be revealed; no harm, covering physical harm, psychological stress and damage to reputation; and the right to withdraw at any time.

Covert observation is the classic ethical dilemma: to obtain authentic data the researcher hides their identity, and participants do not know they are being studied, which directly violates informed consent. Supporters argue that some groups (such as extremist organisations or gangs) could never be studied with consent, making covert observation the only option; opponents argue that no justification can defend deception.

Research on children requires additional ethical protection: parental or guardian consent is mandatory, and researchers must be alert to power imbalances so that children do not answer against their will out of fear. When researching sensitive topics such as domestic violence or youth crime, anonymity is especially important because disclosure could place participants in real danger.

When answering, discuss ethical issues in connection with specific methods. For example, the ethical points of “using a questionnaire to study teenage smoking” are anonymity and encouraging honest answers; the ethical points of “using participant observation to study school bullying” are the observer’s duty to intervene and the conflict with the bully’s privacy. Applying abstract ethical principles to concrete research situations is the key to high marks.

8. Paper 2 核心考点:家庭 – 功能主义、马克思主义与女权主义视角 | Key Topic 5: The Family – Functionalist, Marxist and Feminist Perspectives

Paper 2 centres on the family, and the first major topic is how the three grand theories explain it. Functionalism sees the family as an indispensable “organ” of society. Murdock (1949), after studying 250 societies, argued that the family universally performs four functions: sexual (meeting adults’ sexual needs), reproductive (producing the next generation), economic (joint production and consumption) and educational (socialising children).

Parsons further proposed the “functional fit” theory: the extended family of pre-industrial society matched the agricultural economy and carried out production, education and care for the elderly; industrial society transferred production to factories, and the family shrank to the nuclear family, retaining only two “irreplaceable” functions: the primary socialisation of children and the stabilisation of adult personalities. Parsons also argued that husbands take the instrumental role (breadwinning) while wives take the expressive role (emotional care).

Marxism sharply criticises functionalism. Zaretsky (1976) argued that the family is not a neutral welfare institution but a “cushion” for capitalism: after being exploited in the factory, the worker returns home to “recharge”, and the family absorbs his anger and frustration, preventing revolution. The family is also a “unit of consumption”, whose members keep the capitalist production cycle running through purchasing goods.

Feminism targets gender inequality inside the family. Liberal feminists emphasise that gender-role socialisation assigns women unpaid domestic work; radical feminists see the family as the core institution of patriarchy, from which men profit through women’s unpaid labour; Marxist feminists Delphy and Leonard (1992) argue that the family is an economic system in which women are exploited as their husbands’ labour. Feminists generally criticise functionalism for romanticising women’s subordinate position as a “natural division”.

Family Change and Diversity: Divorce, Cohabitation and Diverse Family Forms

The second major topic of Paper 2 is change in the contemporary family. UK data show that the divorce rate rose sharply from the 1960s; the Divorce Reform Act of 1969 made divorce easier, and the rate kept climbing through the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s before easing in recent years. At the same time, marriage rates fell, first-marriage ages rose, cohabitation became widespread, and lone-parent and single-person households increased.

Sociology offers multiple explanations for the rising divorce rate: legal change (divorce became easier), women’s economic independence (no longer dependent on marriage), secularisation (weakened religious constraints on marriage), rising expectations of marriage (marriage seen as the pursuit of personal happiness, so disappointment comes faster), and the outward shift of family functions (the state now provides pensions and childcare). In answers, link these factors to theoretical perspectives such as functionalism and feminism.

On family diversity, the Rapoports (1982) identified five types: organisational diversity (different structures such as nuclear, lone-parent and reconstituted), cultural diversity (different family patterns across ethnic groups), social class diversity (different practices between working-class and middle-class families), life course diversity (the family changes form across a person’s life stages) and cohort diversity (different generations hold different family values).

Young and Willmott (1973) introduced the concept of the “symmetrical family”: a more equal division of domestic labour, joint decision-making, and a home-centred family life. Functionalists read this as a “march of progress”, while feminists question how widespread the symmetrical family really is, noting that housework and childcare still fall mainly on women and that the “dual burden” persists. Examinations often ask candidates to evaluate whether the family is becoming more equal.

10. 论文题评分要求:AO1 知识理解与 AO2 分析评估 | Essay Assessment: AO1 Knowledge and AO2 Analysis and Evaluation

AO1(知识与理解,Knowledge and Understanding)考查学生对概念、理论与研究的掌握程度:能否准确定义术语、能否正确引用理论家与研究、能否用例子支撑论点。AO2(分析与评估,Analysis and Evaluation)考查学生的批判思维:能否比较不同视角、能否指出理论的优点与局限、能否评价研究证据的强弱。

CIE Sociology is marked against two assessment objectives. AO1 (Knowledge and Understanding) tests how well students master concepts, theories and studies: defining terms accurately, citing theorists and research correctly, and supporting arguments with examples. AO2 (Analysis and Evaluation) tests critical thinking: comparing different perspectives, identifying the strengths and limitations of theories, and judging the strength of research evidence.

Understanding the weighting matters: in essay questions, AO2 usually carries more weight. Simply piling up knowledge without analysis caps the mark at mid-range; only by evaluating theories (for example “functionalism ignores conflict and inequality within the family”) and questioning evidence (for example “the evidence for the symmetrical family comes from a class-specific sample and may not be general”) can candidates reach the top mark band.

High-scoring scripts share common features: an opening that answers the question directly and states a position; body paragraphs following the PEEE structure (Point, Evidence, Explain, Evaluate); at least two contrasting perspectives compared; and a conclusion that restates the position with reasons. Avoid copying long passages from textbooks; examiners reward logic organised in the candidate’s own words.

11. 指令词解析与答题框架:Identify、Explain、Assess 怎么答 | Command Words and Answer Frameworks: How to Answer Identify, Explain and Assess

Every command word in CIE papers carries a different requirement. When reading a question, underline the command word before planning your answer. Identify and State are the lowest demands: write the concept or fact directly, usually worth 1 to 2 marks, with no explanation needed, for example “identify two agencies of socialisation” can be answered with “family and school”.

Outline and Describe require a brief account of features, usually around 4 marks, giving a definition plus two or three points. Explain requires “why” and “how”, usually 6 to 8 marks, and demands developed causal chains, for example explaining “why the divorce rate has risen” means giving several reasons with explanation, not just a list.

Assess(评估)、Evaluate(评价)与 Discuss(讨论)是最难的指令词,分值最高(通常 10 分以上),要求呈现正反两方面的观点并作出判断。例如”Assess the view that the family benefits everyone”(评估’家庭对所有人都有利’这一观点),就要既呈现功能主义的”有利论”,又呈现女权主义与马克思主义的”不利论”,最后给出自己的结论。

Assess, Evaluate and Discuss are the hardest command words, carrying the highest marks (usually over 10), and require presenting both sides of an argument before reaching a judgement. For example, “Assess the view that the family benefits everyone” demands both the functionalist case that it benefits everyone and the feminist and Marxist cases that it does not, followed by a reasoned conclusion.

Time management for essays: spend 3 to 5 minutes planning (position, two contrasting perspectives, key points per paragraph, examples), then write from the plan, and keep 2 minutes at the end to check. Each of Paper 1 and Paper 2 lasts 90 minutes, and each big question is worth around 20 marks; a sensible rhythm is “marks multiplied by 1.5 minutes”, so an 8-mark question gets about 12 minutes and a 10-mark question about 15 minutes.

Revision Planning: From Syllabus Mapping to Past Paper Practice

Revision for CIE AS Sociology can be divided into three stages. Stage one (8 to 12 weeks before the exam) is “syllabus mapping”: check every point against the official syllabus, and organise notes across the four blocks of Paper 1 (socialisation, culture, identity, methods of research) and the two blocks of Paper 2 (family theory, family change). For every point you should be able to state the definition, the relevant theories and studies, and an example.

Stage two (4 to 8 weeks before the exam) is “topic strengthening”: targeted practice on weak areas, such as drills on “compare two research methods” questions, or memorising a comparison table of the functionalist, Marxist and feminist views of the family. This stage is also the time to build a “theorist file”: the views and key works of Murdock, Parsons, Zaretsky, Delphy and Leonard, the Rapoports, and Young and Willmott, so that you can cite them accurately in the exam.

Stage three (1 to 4 weeks before the exam) is “past paper practice”: complete at least five years of past papers under timed conditions, then self-mark against the mark scheme. The point is not how many you get right but how you understand where marks come from: which points hit AO1 and which analysis hits AO2. Topics that recur in past papers (such as agencies of socialisation, comparing questionnaires with interviews, and the functionalist view of the family) are almost certain to appear again.

Finally, two easy-to-overlook details that raise marks. First, write clear English and spell key terms correctly at first use (such as socialisation, validity, representativeness); misspelling core terms damages the impression of both AO1 and AO2. Second, sociology answers need “sociological language”: replace everyday speech with terms such as “social construction”, “gender socialisation” and “functional fit”, and the academic quality of your answers will visibly improve.

Summary |

CIE AS Sociology (9699) consists of two papers: Paper 1 on socialisation, identity and methods of research, and Paper 2 on the sociology of the family. The core of preparation is “knowledge plus analysis”: you must both master the details of concepts, theorists and studies (AO1) and be able to compare perspectives, evaluate evidence and reach conclusions (AO2).

The 12 sections covered here map onto the main body of the syllabus: mechanisms of socialisation, culture and norms, identity, research methods and their quality criteria, sampling and ethics, the three theoretical perspectives on the family, family change and diversity, assessment requirements, command-word strategy and revision planning. We recommend working through the three stages of syllabus mapping, topic strengthening and past paper practice, turning every point into a complete module of “definition plus theory plus example”.

The secret to high marks in sociology is not rote memorisation but “thinking with evidence”: ask what every theory ignores and whether every study can be generalised. Walk into the exam room with that critical eye, and you will perform steadily in both Paper 1 and Paper 2.
