1. Cell Structure and Microscopy |

Animal and plant cells share a nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria and ribosomes. Plant cells also have a cellulose cell wall, chloroplasts and a permanent vacuole. Bacterial cells have no nucleus but contain circular DNA and plasmids.

The magnification formula is used to compare image size and real size. Always convert lengths to the same unit before calculating.

magnification = image size ÷ actual size

Electron microscopes have a much higher resolution than light microscopes, so they can show subcellular structures such as ribosomes and plasmids.

2. Cell Division and Stem Cells |

Chromosomes are made of DNA and contain genes. In mitosis, one parent cell produces two genetically identical daughter cells for growth, repair and asexual reproduction.

The cell cycle includes DNA replication, chromosome alignment, separation and cytokinesis. Before division, each chromosome copies itself to form two chromatids joined at a centromere.

Embryonic stem cells are pluripotent, meaning they can differentiate into almost any cell type. Adult stem cells are multipotent and can only form a limited range of cells. Stem cell treatments raise ethical issues because embryonic stem cells are obtained from embryos.

3. Transport Across Cell Membranes |

Diffusion is the net movement of particles from a high concentration to a low concentration down a concentration gradient. It is a passive process, so it does not require energy.

Osmosis is the diffusion of water through a partially permeable membrane from a dilute solution to a more concentrated solution. Water moves down its water potential gradient.

Active transport moves substances against a concentration gradient. It requires energy released by respiration and carrier proteins in the cell membrane.

Process Energy needed? Concentration gradient
Diffusion No Down
Osmosis No Down
Active transport Yes Against

4. Organisation: Digestive System and Enzymes |

Enzymes are biological catalysts that speed up chemical reactions without being used up. The lock and key model explains enzyme specificity: the active site has a complementary shape to the substrate.

Amylase breaks down starch into maltose, protease breaks down protein into amino acids, and lipase breaks down lipids into glycerol and fatty acids. Bile emulsifies lipids and neutralises stomach acid in the small intestine.

Enzyme Substrate Products
Amylase Starch Maltose
Protease Protein Amino acids
Lipase Lipids Glycerol and fatty acids

High temperature or extreme pH can denature enzymes by changing the shape of the active site, so the substrate can no longer bind.

5. Organisation: Circulatory System and Plant Transport |

The heart pumps blood through a double circulatory system. Arteries carry blood away from the heart under high pressure; veins return blood to the heart and contain valves; capillaries allow exchange of substances with tissues.

Xylem transports water and mineral ions from the roots to the leaves in the transpiration stream. Phloem transports sucrose and amino acids from sources to sinks by translocation.

Coronary heart disease can be reduced by stents that keep arteries open, statins that lower blood cholesterol, or lifestyle changes such as stopping smoking and doing regular exercise.

6. Infection and Response |

Pathogens include viruses, bacteria, fungi and protists. Bacteria release toxins that damage cells; viruses reproduce inside host cells and cause cell damage.

White blood cells defend the body by phagocytosis, producing antibodies and producing antitoxins. Antibodies bind to specific antigens on pathogens and lead to their destruction.

Vaccination introduces an inactive or weakened pathogen to stimulate memory lymphocytes. If the real pathogen later enters the body, memory cells produce antibodies more rapidly.

Antibiotics kill bacteria but do not affect viruses because viruses live inside host cells and lack their own metabolic pathways.

7. Bioenergetics: Photosynthesis |

Photosynthesis converts light energy into chemical energy stored in glucose. The reaction takes place in chloroplasts using chlorophyll.

6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂

The rate of photosynthesis is limited by light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration and temperature. The limiting factor is the factor nearest its minimum value.

light intensity ∝ 1 ÷ distance²

The inverse square law shows that doubling the distance from a lamp reduces light intensity to one quarter.

8. Bioenergetics: Respiration and Metabolism |

Aerobic respiration uses oxygen to release energy from glucose. It takes place in mitochondria and produces carbon dioxide and water.

C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O

Anaerobic respiration in muscle cells produces lactic acid, which causes muscle fatigue and oxygen debt. In yeast and plant cells, anaerobic respiration produces ethanol and carbon dioxide.

Metabolism is the sum of all chemical reactions in the body, including the synthesis of proteins, lipids and glycogen, and the breakdown of excess proteins into urea.

9. Homeostasis and the Nervous System |

Homeostasis maintains stable internal conditions, such as blood glucose concentration, body temperature and water levels. Negative feedback reverses any movement away from the set point.
