CH02 tests three broad skill areas: use of chemical quantities, explanation of physical processes, and application of organic reaction mechanisms. Questions often link a calculation to a written explanation, so you should practise showing working and using correct significant figures.

The mole is the central unit linking mass, concentration, gas volume and chemical equations. Remember that n = m / M, and for solutions n = c × V, where V must be in dm³.

At room temperature and pressure, one mole of any gas occupies about 24.0 dm³, so n = V(gas) / 24.0. When a reaction involves a gas collected over water, subtract the water vapour pressure before using the ideal gas equation.
