Breathing and Gas Exchange |

📚 Breathing and Gas Exchange |

Breathing is the process of moving air into and out of the lungs. It supplies oxygen for respiration and removes carbon dioxide. In KS3 CIE science, you need to understand the organs involved, how ventilation works, and how gases are exchanged in the alveoli.

1. Why We Breathe |

Every cell in your body needs energy to stay alive, grow and repair itself. This energy is released from nutrients such as glucose during a process called respiration.

Respiration uses oxygen and produces carbon dioxide as a waste product. Breathing brings in the oxygen and removes the carbon dioxide from the body.

If oxygen supply stops for more than a few minutes, cells cannot release enough energy and can be damaged. This is why breathing is essential for life.

2. The Human Breathing System |

The main organs of the human breathing system are the nose, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, lungs and diaphragm.

The trachea splits into two bronchi, one for each lung. Inside the lungs, the bronchi divide into smaller tubes called bronchioles, which end in tiny air sacs called alveoli.

The lungs are protected by the ribcage, and the diaphragm is a sheet of muscle that separates the chest cavity from the abdomen.

3. Pathway of Air |

Air enters through the nose or mouth, where it is warmed, moistened and filtered by hairs and mucus in the nasal passages.

The air then travels down the trachea, through the bronchi and bronchioles, and finally reaches the alveoli in the lungs.

The epiglottis is a flap of tissue that closes over the trachea when you swallow, preventing food and drink from entering the airways.

The trachea and bronchi are supported by rings of cartilage, which keep the airways open during breathing movements.

4. Ventilation: Breathing In | 通气:吸气

Breathing in is called inhalation or inspiration. During quiet breathing, it is an active process that requires muscle contraction.

When you inhale, the diaphragm contracts and flattens. The intercostal muscles between the ribs contract and lift the ribcage up and outwards.

These movements increase the volume of the chest cavity. As the volume increases, the pressure inside the lungs drops below atmospheric pressure, so air rushes in.

The lungs themselves do not have muscles; they expand and contract because of the movements of the diaphragm and ribcage.

5. Ventilation: Breathing Out | 通气:呼气

Breathing out is called exhalation or expiration. At rest it is mostly a passive process, meaning it does not require much muscle contraction.

When you exhale, the diaphragm relaxes and moves back into a dome shape. The intercostal muscles relax, so the ribcage moves down and inwards.

These changes reduce the volume of the chest cavity. The pressure inside the lungs rises above atmospheric pressure, so air is pushed out of the lungs.

During forced breathing, such as during exercise, extra muscles in the abdomen can also help push air out more quickly.

6. Gas Exchange in the Alveoli |

Gas exchange happens in the alveoli. Oxygen moves from the air inside the alveoli into the blood, and carbon dioxide moves from the blood into the alveoli.

Gases move by diffusion, which is the net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration.

Inhaled air has a higher oxygen concentration than the blood arriving at the lungs, so oxygen diffuses into the blood. The blood arriving at the lungs has a higher carbon dioxide concentration than the alveolar air, so carbon dioxide diffuses out.

This exchange happens continuously because breathing keeps bringing fresh air into the alveoli and the blood keeps flowing through the capillaries around them.

7. Adaptations of the Alveoli |

Alveoli are well adapted for efficient gas exchange. They are tiny and very numerous, giving the lungs a huge total surface area.

Each alveolus has a wall that is only one cell thick, so the diffusion distance for gases is very short.

The alveoli are covered with a dense network of capillaries, and their inner surface is moist. These features help oxygen and carbon dioxide dissolve and diffuse rapidly.

A large surface area, a short diffusion distance and a good blood supply all increase the rate of gas exchange.

8. Breathing vs Respiration |

Do not confuse breathing with respiration. Breathing is the movement of air into and out of the lungs. It is a physical process that can be observed.

Respiration is a chemical process that happens inside cells. It releases energy from glucose using oxygen and produces carbon dioxide and water as waste products.

The word equation for aerobic respiration is: glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water (+ energy).

glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water (+ energy)

Breathing brings the oxygen needed for respiration into the body and removes the carbon dioxide produced by it.

9. Gas Transport in the Blood |

Oxygen is carried in the blood by red blood cells. Inside red blood cells, oxygen binds to a substance called haemoglobin, forming oxyhaemoglobin.

Most carbon dioxide is carried in the blood plasma as dissolved carbon dioxide or as hydrogen carbonate ions. A small amount binds to haemoglobin.

Red blood cells are biconcave discs with no nucleus, which gives them more space to carry oxygen. They contain haemoglobin, which can bind oxygen reversibly.

The blood flowing away from the lungs is bright red because it is rich in oxygen. Blood returning to the lungs is darker red because it carries more carbon dioxide and less oxygen.

10. Exercise and Breathing Rate |

During exercise, muscles contract more often and need more energy. This means they carry out more respiration and use more oxygen.

The breathing rate and the depth of each breath increase during exercise. This brings more oxygen into the lungs and removes more carbon dioxide.

The heart rate also increases, so blood flows faster and carries gases more quickly between the lungs and muscles.

After exercise, the breathing rate stays high for a while to repay the oxygen debt and remove extra carbon dioxide produced by the muscles.

11. Lung Health and Smoking |

Smoking damages the breathing system. Cigarette smoke contains tar, nicotine, carbon monoxide and many harmful chemicals.

Tar sticks to the lining of the airways and damages cilia, the tiny hairs that normally remove mucus and trapped dust. This leads to a build-up of mucus and a smoker’s cough.

Carbon monoxide reduces how much oxygen the blood can carry, and smoking increases the risk of lung cancer, COPD and infections.
