📚 Edexcel Maths Pure Paper 2 Mark Scheme: How Examiners Award Marks |
This guide explains how the Edexcel A Level Mathematics Pure Paper 2 mark scheme (MS) works. It helps you understand what examiners look for, where marks are gained or lost, and how to write solutions that score full marks.
1. Paper 2 at a glance |
Edexcel A Level Mathematics Paper 2 is a pure mathematics paper taken by all candidates. It lasts 2 hours and carries 100 raw marks, which is one third of the total A level Mathematics qualification.
The paper covers pure content only. Typical topics include proof, algebra and functions, coordinate geometry, sequences and series, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, differentiation, integration, numerical methods, and vectors.
Because Paper 2 is pure mathematics, most questions require a clear chain of reasoning. The mark scheme rewards both method and accuracy, so a correct answer without working often earns fewer marks than expected.
- Proof and mathematical argument |
- Algebra and functions |
- Coordinate geometry in the (x,y) plane | (x,y)
- Sequences and series |
- Trigonometry |
- Exponentials and logarithms |
- Differentiation and integration |
- Numerical methods and vectors |
2. How the mark scheme is organised |
An Edexcel mark scheme is a working document for examiners. It breaks each question into individual marks labelled M, A, B, or sometimes dM, depM, ft, and dA.
The main mark types are:
- M1: method mark for attempting a valid method | M1:
- A1: accuracy mark for a correct answer or statement | A1:
- B1: independent mark for a correct fact, definition, or statement | B1:
- dM1: dependent method mark, only available after a previous method mark | dM1:依赖方法分,只有在前一个方法分获得后才能得到
- dA1: dependent accuracy mark, available only after a previous accuracy mark | dA1:依赖准确分,只有在前一个准确分获得后才能得到
- ft: follow-through mark for using an earlier incorrect value correctly | ft:后续分,指正确使用前面的错误值得分
Each question in the mark scheme shows how these marks are allocated step by step. It also gives notes on alternative methods, acceptable forms, and common errors.
3. Method marks (M1) | 方法分 M1
A method mark is awarded for using a correct mathematical process, even if the final answer is wrong. The process must be relevant to the question and must go beyond simply copying the given information.
For example, in a differentiation question, M1 is usually awarded when the candidate multiplies by the power and reduces the power by 1 correctly for at least one term. A correct derivative then earns the A1 mark.
Example: Find dy/dx for y = 3x² – 5x + 2.
dy/dx = 6x – 5
M1 is awarded for the attempt to differentiate 3x² into 6x, or for a general power rule attempt. A1 is awarded for the fully correct derivative 6x – 5.
You do not need to write a full essay, but the method must be visible. If you write only the answer and it is wrong, you usually score no method marks.
4. Accuracy marks (A1) | 答案分 A1
An accuracy mark is given for a correct answer or a correct intermediate result that is explicitly required. The answer must be in the form requested by the question.
If the question asks for an exact value, a decimal approximation will usually not earn A1. If the question asks for three significant figures, you must write the value to three significant figures.
Example: Solve x² – 4 = 0. The exact solutions are x = ±2. Writing x = 2 and x = -2 earns A1. Writing x ≈ 2.0 may lose A1 unless the question allows approximation.
Some A marks are allowed to follow through from an earlier incorrect value. These are labelled ft in the mark scheme. However, the follow-through must not make the question easier or give an impossible result.
5. Independent and dependent marks |
Independent marks are labelled B or sometimes M1. They can be awarded even if earlier parts of the question are wrong. Dependent marks are labelled dM1 or dA1 and can only be awarded after the required earlier mark has been earned.
For example, in an integration question, you may need to integrate a function, then substitute limits to find an area. Here, M1 might be for integrating, dM1 for substituting the limits, and A1 for the correct area.
The dependent mark dM1 cannot be awarded if the first M1 was not earned. This is because the candidate has not demonstrated the first essential step in the valid method.
Understanding this distinction helps you see why skipping key steps is dangerous. A missing first step may cost several later marks.
6. Implied marks and follow-through | 隐含分与后续分
Sometimes a correct answer implies that a method has been carried out. In such cases, the mark scheme may say that the M1 mark is implied by the correct answer, so full marks can still be awarded.
For example, if a question asks you to solve a quadratic and you write the two correct roots with no working, examiners may award the method mark because the answer itself shows the quadratic was solved.
Follow-through marks allow a candidate to be rewarded for correctly using an earlier wrong answer. Suppose you find x = -2 instead of x = 2 in part (a). In part (b), you substitute your value into the gradient function correctly and obtain a consistent gradient. The mark scheme may award ft for this correct use.
However, ft marks are only given when the method is still valid and the error does not simplify the problem. If your earlier error makes the later step trivial or meaningless, ft will not be awarded.
7. Common command words and expected working |
The wording of a question tells you how much working is needed and what form the answer should take. Common command words in Paper 2 include:
- Show that: give a complete derivation with no missing steps | Show that:给出完整推导,不能省略步骤
- Prove: give a rigorous mathematical argument | Prove:
- Hence: use the result from the previous part | Hence:
- Find the exact value: give a surd, fraction, or multiple of pi, not a decimal | Find the exact value:给出根式、分数或 pi 的倍数,而不是小数
- State: write down the answer without detailed working | State:直接写出答案,不需要详细过程
- Sketch: draw the key features accurately enough to show shape and intercepts | Sketch:
If a question says Show that, you must not start from the result you are trying to show. For example, to show that x² – 2x + 1 = (x – 1)², expand the right-hand side or factorise the left-hand side, rather than writing the conclusion first.
Questions with Hence expect you to use the previous result. If you use a different method, you may still earn marks, but you may miss out on marks reserved for the hence method.
8. Marking principles for proofs and justifications |
Proof questions are a key part of Paper 2. The mark scheme checks whether your argument is complete, logical, and mathematically valid, not just whether the final line is correct.
For proof by contradiction, you must clearly state the assumption, derive a contradiction, and then conclude that the original statement is true. Missing the conclusion often loses the final A1 mark.
For proof by exhaustion, you must cover every case and state that the set of cases is complete. A table of values can be useful, but you still need a concluding sentence.
For algebraic proofs, every step must be justified by a known identity, theorem, or earlier line. Avoid using the symbol = between quantities that are not equal; this can lose accuracy marks.
Example: Prove by contradiction that √2 is irrational.
Assume √2 = p/q where p and q are integers with no common factors. Squaring gives 2 = p²/q², so p² = 2q². Thus p² is even, so p is even. Write p = 2k. Then p² = 4k² = 2q², so q² = 2k², making q even. This contradicts the assumption that p and q have no common factors. Hence √2 is irrational.
For full marks, the mark scheme would require the assumption, the derivation of the contradiction, and the final conclusion. Each of these elements can be awarded separately.
9. Typical mistakes that lose marks |
Many marks are lost not because the topic is difficult but because the written solution is incomplete or inaccurate. The following errors appear frequently in examiners reports.
- Dropping the constant of integration +C in indefinite integrals | 不定积分中漏掉积分常数 +C
- Using degree mode instead of radian mode in trigonometric differentiation, integration, and graphs |
- Giving a decimal when the question asks for an exact value |
- Rounding too early in numerical methods or iterative sequences |
- Missing brackets when substituting negative values into expressions |
- Writing the sign of the second derivative incorrectly when classifying stationary points |
- Not simplifying a final fraction, surd, or logarithmic expression when the mark scheme requires it | 在评分方案要求化简时未化简最终的分数、根式或对数表达式
- Using a calculator shortcut without showing the required working |
Each of these errors may cost only one A1 mark, but across a 100-mark paper they can make a difference of one or two grades.
You should read examiner reports alongside mark schemes. They explain why marks are frequently lost and what examiners want to see in a precise answer.
10. Using mark schemes for revision |
A mark scheme is not just an answer key. It is a revision tool that helps you understand assessment objectives and the level of detail expected.
After completing past paper questions, mark your work using the official mark scheme. For every lost mark, record whether it was a method mark, an accuracy mark, or an independent mark. This tells you whether you need to improve your processes or your accuracy.
- If you lose M1: practise choosing and starting valid methods | 如果失去 M1:练习选择和启动有效方法
- If you lose A1: practise simplification, exact forms, and checking calculations | 如果失去 A1:练习化简、精确形式以及检查计算
- If you lose B1: review definitions, theorems, and standard results | 如果失去 B1:复习定义、定理和标准结果
- If you lose dM1: make sure you complete the first method step before moving on | 如果失去 dM1:确保在继续之前完成第一个方法步骤
Mark schemes also list alternative methods. If your method is correct but not shown, find the closest match in the mark scheme and check whether your answer would have been accepted. This teaches you how much working is enough.
