1. Light Travels in Straight Lines |
Light is a form of energy that travels in straight lines called rays. A ray is drawn as a straight arrow showing the direction of travel. A beam is made of many rays.
We can see a light ray only when it enters the eye. In diagrams, always draw rays with a ruler and mark the direction with an arrow. The arrow must point from the light source towards the eye, not the other way.
Light travels at about 300,000,000 m/s in a vacuum. In air, its speed is almost the same. In water and glass, light travels more slowly, which helps explain refraction later.
2. Shadows, Eclipses and the Pinhole Camera |
A shadow forms when an opaque object blocks light. Because light travels in straight lines, the shadow has a similar shape to the object. Translucent objects let some light through, so they make weak shadows. Transparent objects let almost all light through, so they do not form clear shadows.
An eclipse is a shadow in space. A solar eclipse happens when the Moon blocks sunlight from reaching part of the Earth. A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth blocks sunlight from reaching the Moon.
A pinhole camera uses a tiny hole to form an upside-down image on a screen. The image is real and inverted because light rays from the top of the object pass through the hole and end up at the bottom of the screen.
If the pinhole is made smaller, the image becomes sharper but dimmer. If the screen is moved further from the pinhole, the image becomes larger but dimmer.
3. Reflection from a Plane Mirror |
Reflection happens when light bounces off a surface. A plane mirror is a flat, smooth surface that reflects light regularly. This gives a clear image.
The image in a plane mirror is upright, the same size as the object, and appears to be the same distance behind the mirror as the object is in front. The image is laterally inverted, which means left and right appear swapped.
The image in a plane mirror is virtual. A virtual image cannot be projected onto a screen because the light rays do not actually pass through the image position; they only appear to come from behind the mirror.
4. The Law of Reflection |
The law of reflection states that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection. Both angles are measured from the normal, not from the mirror surface.
The normal is an imaginary line drawn at 90 degrees to the surface at the point where the ray hits. The incident ray is the incoming ray, and the reflected ray is the outgoing ray.
angle of incidence i = angle of reflection r
For a ray hitting a plane mirror at 30 degrees to the mirror surface, the angle of incidence is not 30 degrees. Calculate it as 90 – 30 = 50 degrees. So the angle of reflection is also 50 degrees.
5. Refraction: Light Bending at Boundaries |
Refraction is the change in direction of light when it passes from one transparent material to another, such as from air into glass or water. It happens because light changes speed.
When light enters a denser medium like glass from air, it slows down and bends towards the normal. When light leaves the denser medium and enters air, it speeds up and bends away from the normal.
If a ray hits the boundary exactly along the normal, it passes straight through without bending. The angle of incidence is 0 degrees, so the angle of refraction is also 0 degrees.
A common example is a straw in a glass of water. The straw looks bent or broken at the water surface because light from the underwater part changes direction when it leaves the water and enters the air.
6. Dispersion and the Visible Spectrum |
White light is a mixture of different colours. When white light passes through a triangular glass prism, it splits into the colours of the visible spectrum. This splitting is called dispersion.
The colours of the visible spectrum in order are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. A useful memory phrase is ‘Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain’.
一个有用的记忆短语是 ‘Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain’。
Dispersion happens because each colour has a slightly different speed inside glass. Red light slows down the least and is bent the least. Violet light slows down the most and is bent the most.
A rainbow is an example of dispersion. Water droplets in the air act like tiny prisms, splitting sunlight into its colours.
7. How We See Colour |
We see objects because light reflects off them and enters our eyes. The colour of an object depends on which colours of light it reflects and which colours it absorbs.
A red apple looks red in white light because it reflects red light and absorbs the other colours. A white shirt looks white because it reflects all colours of the spectrum. A black object looks black because it absorbs nearly all colours and reflects very little.
Colour filters work by transmitting only some colours and absorbing others. A red filter lets red light through and absorbs other colours. If you shine pure green light through a red filter, almost no light passes, so the filter appears black.
If an object is viewed in coloured light, its appearance can change. A blue object in red light looks black because there is no blue light to reflect. A white object in green light looks green because it reflects green light.
8. Lenses and the Human Eye |
A convex lens is thicker in the middle than at the edges. It converges light rays to a focus. The distance from the centre of the lens to the focus is called the focal length.
A convex lens can form real and inverted images on a screen. If the object is far away, the image is smaller. If the object is close but beyond the focus, the image can be larger and inverted.
The eye contains a convex lens that focuses light onto the retina. The retina is a light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. The image on the retina is real, inverted and smaller than the object. The brain interprets this image as upright.
The iris controls how much light enters the eye through the pupil. In bright light, the pupil becomes smaller. In dim light, the pupil becomes larger. The cornea also helps focus light before it passes through the lens.
9. Key Measurements and Units |
When answering exam questions on light, always name the correct equipment and state the correct unit. Angles are measured in degrees using a protractor.
To investigate reflection, place a plane mirror on a sheet of paper. Draw the incident ray, the normal and the reflected ray. Use a protractor to measure the angle between each ray and the normal. Repeat for different incident angles.
For refraction, use a glass block or water tank. Shine a ray of light at the surface and mark the path of the ray before and after the block. Draw the normal at each boundary and measure the angles of incidence and refraction.
The speed of light is not usually measured in KS3 labs because it is extremely fast. Instead, you may be asked to recall its approximate value: 3 × 10⁸ m/s.
10. Common Misconceptions and Exam Answers |
A very common mistake is to think that we see objects because the eye sends out rays. The correct idea is that light reflects from the object into the eye. Check your ray diagrams carefully: the arrow must point towards the eye.
Another misconception is that shadows are always completely black. In fact, shadows can have a dark central region called the umbra and a lighter outer region called the penumbra when the light source is large.
Students sometimes say that in a mirror the image swaps left and right completely. It is better to say the image is laterally inverted. The mirror does not swap top and bottom.
For refraction, do not say ‘light bends because it hits the glass’. The correct explanation is that light bends because it changes speed when it enters a different medium. If asked about direction, say towards the normal when slowing down, and away from the normal when speeding up.
For colour, do not say ‘a red object absorbs red light’. That is backwards. A red object reflects red light and absorbs the other colours.
11. Quick Practice Questions with Answers |
Question 1: State the law of reflection.
Answer: The angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection, measured from the normal.
Question 2: A light ray hits a mirror. The angle between the incident ray and the mirror surface is 20 degrees. What is the angle of reflection?
Answer: Angle of incidence = 90 – 20 = 70 degrees, so the angle of reflection is also 70 degrees.
Question 3: Why does a pencil look bent when placed in a glass of water?
Answer: Light from the underwater part of the pencil refracts at the water-air surface. The rays change direction, so the pencil appears bent.
Question 4: Name the colours of the visible spectrum in order.
Answer: Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet.
Question 5: A blue object is viewed in red light. What colour does it appear? Explain.
Answer: It appears black because it can only reflect blue light. Red light contains no blue light, so the object reflects almost nothing.
