In KS3 CIE Science, questions on the structure of the flower are common in the Biology strand. The mark scheme rewards accurate use of reproductive terminology, correct identification of parts on a diagram, and clear explanations of pollination, fertilisation, seed and fruit formation.

1. Flower Structure Terminology | 花的结构术语
The mark scheme expects you to use the correct scientific names, not everyday words. For example, write ‘anther’, not ‘pollen bag’.

The stamen is the male reproductive organ. It consists of the anther and the filament.

Examiners often award one mark per function linked to the correct part. Avoid listing a part without its function when the question asks ‘describe the function’.

The anther produces and releases pollen. The filament supports the anther so that insects or wind can remove pollen.

3. Pollination in the Mark Scheme | 评分标准中的传粉
Pollination is the transfer of pollen from the anther to the stigma. It must be stated clearly: pollen must come from the anther and land on the stigma.

Self-pollination occurs when pollen lands on the stigma of the same flower or another flower on the same plant. Cross-pollination occurs when pollen is transferred to a flower on a different plant of the same species.

Insect-pollinated flowers often have bright petals, scent, nectar, sticky pollen grains and a sticky stigma inside the flower.

Wind-pollinated flowers often have small or dull petals, no scent or nectar, large amounts of light pollen, and feathery stigmas hanging outside the flower.

Marks are given for using comparative statements, such as ‘sticky pollen’ for insect pollination and ‘light, smooth pollen’ for wind pollination.

4. Fertilisation Process and Its Mark Points | 受精过程及其给分点
Fertilisation in plants is the fusion of a male gamete from the pollen grain with a female gamete in the ovule. The mark scheme requires more than just ‘pollen meets ovule’.

After pollination, a pollen grain on the stigma grows a pollen tube down the style. The pollen tube carries the male nucleus to the ovule.

The pollen tube enters the ovule through the micropyle. The male nucleus then fuses with the egg cell nucleus inside the ovule.
