Neutralisation is a chemical reaction in which an acid reacts with a base to form a salt and water.

In KS3, the base is often an alkali, which is a soluble base that releases hydroxide ions (OH⁻) in water.

The simplest neutralisation reaction follows this pattern:

Notice that neutralisation with a carbonate also produces carbon dioxide gas, so you will see bubbles.

The pH scale runs from 0 to 14. A pH of 7 is neutral, below 7 is acidic, and above 7 is alkaline.
