The mark scheme usually gives the final answer to a fixed number of significant figures, often 2 or 3, and states that the answer must be quoted to that precision. pH = -log₁₀(3.48 × 10⁻⁵) = 4.46

The mark scheme would allow 4.45 or 4.46 depending on rounding, but it would reject 4.5 unless the question specifically allowed 2 significant figures. Candidates often lose a mark by quoting too few or too many significant figures, or by forgetting to divide moles by the total volume in a buffer made from solutions.
