In IGCSE Chemistry, many investigations produce numerical results such as temperature changes, gas volumes, reaction times and masses. These results only become useful when they are presented clearly. A well-organised table, a correctly labelled graph and appropriate units allow you to identify trends, calculate rates and evaluate reliability. Examiners award marks for sensible recording and presentation, not just for the final answer.

1. Why Clear Data Presentation Matters | 为什么清晰的数据呈现很重要

Raw numerical data alone are difficult to interpret. Clear presentation turns numbers into patterns that can be analysed. In IGCSE Chemistry, practical questions often ask you to record results, draw a graph, describe a trend, and use the graph to make a prediction. Each of these steps depends on how well the data are presented.

A common mistake is to lose marks because of missing units, poorly chosen scales or inconsistent decimal places. Presenting data correctly is therefore not just a practical skill; it is an examined skill that supports accurate conclusions.

2. Tables: Recording Results | 表格:记录结果

Always record raw data in a table during the experiment. Put the independent variable, the one you change, in the first column. Put the dependent variable, the one you measure, in the next column. If repeats are taken, add extra columns for repeat readings and the mean. Every column heading must include the quantity and its unit.

Use ruled lines to separate rows and columns. This makes the table easier to read and helps you avoid writing a value in the wrong column.

3. Units and Column Headings | 单位与列标题

Use SI units where possible: time in s, temperature in °C, mass in g, volume in cm³ or dm³, concentration in mol/dm³ and energy in J or kJ/mol. In a column heading, write the unit after a slash, for example ‘Volume of gas / cm³’. This shows that the numbers in that column are measured in cm³, so you do not need to repeat the unit next to every value.

A common error is to mix units, such as recording some volumes in cm³ and others in dm³. If you convert, remember that 1000 cm³ = 1 dm³. Choose one unit and stay with it throughout the table and graph.

4. Significant Figures and Decimal Places | 有效数字与小数位数

Record values to the precision of the instrument. A burette reading may be 23.50 cm³, not 23.5 cm³, because burettes are read to the nearest 0.05 cm³ or better. When calculating, do not quote an answer to more significant figures than the data allow. In IGCSE, 2 or 3 significant figures are usually acceptable.

按照仪器精度记录数值。滴定管读数可能应记录为 23.50 cm³,而不是 23.5 cm³,因为滴定管通常读到 0.05 cm³ 或更精确。计算时,结果的位数不应超过数据允许的有效数字。在 IGCSE 中,通常 2 到 3 位有效数字即可。

Keep the number of decimal places consistent within a table. If temperature readings are taken to the nearest 0.5 °C, write 24.0 °C rather than 24 °C. This makes the data look uniform and helps when comparing values.
