The Heating Curve of Water |

📚 The Heating Curve of Water |

Understanding the heating curve of water is a key skill in KS3 science. It shows how ice changes into liquid water and then into steam as heat is added. This article explains each stage of the curve and the particle behaviour behind it.

1. What Is a Heating Curve? |

A heating curve is a graph that plots temperature on the vertical axis against time or heat energy added on the horizontal axis. If we heat a sample of ice and record its temperature at regular intervals, we can draw this curve. It helps us identify the melting point and boiling point of a substance.

For water, the curve has a distinctive shape with two flat sections. These flat sections show where water changes state.

2. The Three States of Water |

Before studying the curve, it is useful to recall the three states of water. In the solid state, water is ice. Its particles are closely packed in a regular pattern and can only vibrate in fixed positions.

In the liquid state, water particles are still close together but can slide past one another. In the gas state, steam particles are far apart and move freely in all directions.

3. Starting with Ice: Heating a Solid |

Suppose we start with ice at -10°C. As we add heat, the temperature of the ice rises steadily. The particles gain kinetic energy and vibrate faster, but they remain in their fixed lattice positions.

Published by TutorHao | KS3 Revision Series | aleveler.com
