📚 A-Level CAIE Philosophy: Essay Writing Framework and Model Answer | A-Level CAIE

Writing a high-scoring A-Level CAIE Philosophy essay is not about memorising a fixed answer; it is about demonstrating a structured, critical and evaluative response to a philosophical problem. This article sets out a practical writing framework and includes a model extract to show how argument, counter-argument and judgement can be woven together under exam conditions.

1. Understanding the CAIE Philosophy Essay Question | 理解 CAIE 哲學论文题目

In CAIE Philosophy, essay questions are deliberately open and invite a range of interpretations. Before writing, identify the key concept, the command word and the scope implied by the question.

For example, a question such as ‘Can machines think?’ is not asking for a factual yes/no answer; it demands analysis of what ‘thinking’ means and whether the concept can be applied to machines.

Spend the first five minutes circling the central term, restating the question in your own words, and deciding which philosophical positions are relevant.

2. Deconstructing the Command Words |

Command words such as ‘Discuss’, ‘Evaluate’, ‘Critically assess’ and ‘To what extent’ signal the depth of judgement required. ‘Discuss’ expects you to present at least two sides and reach a reasoned verdict.

‘Evaluate’ goes further: you must identify strengths and weaknesses in an argument, not merely describe it. ‘To what extent’ requires a qualified judgement, acknowledging both supporting and opposing evidence.

Underline the command word and write one sentence defining what a successful answer must do. This prevents the common mistake of writing everything you know about a topic without addressing the task.

3. Planning the Essay Structure |

A high-level CAIE Philosophy essay usually follows a three-part structure: introduction, main body and conclusion. The main body should be organised around two or three central arguments, each developed through reason, example and evaluation.

An effective plan can be drawn as a bullet list. For each body paragraph, write the claim, a supporting reason, a counter-argument and a response to that counter-argument.

Do not skip planning to save time. A clear plan reduces the risk of repetition and makes the evaluative thread visible to examiners.

4. Introduction: Thesis and Scope |

The introduction should define the central terms briefly, state your thesis and signpost the argumentative route. Avoid vague openings such as ‘Since ancient times philosophers have debated…’

A strong thesis is specific and evaluative. For example: ‘The justified true belief account captures the core of propositional knowledge, but it fails in Gettier cases and therefore needs a fourth condition or a replacement account.’

Signposting can be as simple as: ‘This essay defends a qualified version of the tripartite analysis by examining its strengths, confronting Gettier counter-examples, and evaluating two major responses.’

5. Main Body: Argument, Counter-argument, Evaluation |

Each body paragraph should begin with a clear topic sentence that states the point, not the example. Then explain the reasoning in your own words before introducing any philosopher or theory.

A common structural pattern is PEEL: Point, Evidence/Explanation, Evaluation, Link. However, in philosophy, the Evaluation step must be more than a token criticism; it should show why the criticism matters.

After presenting an argument, include a counter-argument such as ‘A critic may reply that…’ and then respond with ‘However, this reply is weakened because…’ This dialogue is what earns top-band marks.

6. Using Philosophical Examples and Thought Experiments |

Examples in philosophy are not decorations; they are tests of a theory. A well-chosen thought experiment, such as the Gettier case, Mary the colour scientist or the ring of Gyges, can clarify a concept and expose weaknesses.

When using a thought experiment, state the setup briefly, extract the principle it is meant to support or challenge, and connect that principle back to the essay question.

For example, in a question on moral obligation, the ring of Gyges is useful because it tests whether people act justly only through fear of punishment. The example must be explained, not merely named.

7. Defining Key Terms with Precision |

Philosophy essay questions often hinge on contested terms such as ‘knowledge’, ‘free will’, ‘justice’ or ‘mind’. A high-scoring answer defines these terms early and uses them consistently.

Avoid dictionary-style definitions that are too broad. Instead, give a philosophical definition: for example, propositional knowledge is ‘true belief plus justification’, not ‘knowing how to ride a bike or knowing a person’.

If a term shifts meaning during the essay, alert the reader. For instance, ‘free will’ may mean the ability to do otherwise, or it may mean acting from one’s own desires without external coercion.

8. Evaluation and Weighing Positions |

Evaluation is the skill that separates A* essays from descriptive ones. To evaluate, ask: Is this premise true? Does the conclusion follow? Are there counter-examples? Does the theory explain the strongest intuitions?
