Common Misconceptions and Corrections in IGCSE WJEC Physical Education | IGCSE WJEC

📚 Common Misconceptions and Corrections in IGCSE WJEC Physical Education | IGCSE WJEC

Students often lose marks in WJEC IGCSE Physical Education not because they lack knowledge, but because they hold onto simplified or outdated ideas. This revision guide tackles the most common misconceptions and shows how to correct them using precise terminology and applied examples from the specification.

1. Health vs Fitness |

Many candidates write ‘a fit person is healthy’ as if the two words mean the same. Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, while fitness is the ability to meet the demands of the environment. A person can be fit for one sport but have poor health due to injury, stress or poor diet.

To correct this, separate health-related components (cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, body composition) from skill-related components (agility, balance, coordination, power, reaction time, speed). Health-related fitness supports everyday health; skill-related fitness supports sports performance.

2. FITT and SPORT Principles | FITT 与 SPORT 原则

A common error is saying FITT stands for Frequency, Intensity, Type and Time, but missing that the two T’s are Time and Type. Also, many learners describe overload simply as ‘training more’, without specifying which FITT variable changes. Overload must be progressive and specific.

To apply FITT correctly, state the exact change: for example, increase frequency from 2 to 3 sessions per week, increase intensity from 60% to 70% of maximum heart rate, increase time from 20 to 30 minutes, or change type from jogging to interval running. The SPORT principle adds Specificity, Progression, Overload, Reversibility and Tedium.

3. Heart Rate Calculations |

Candidates often write ‘target heart rate = 220 – age’ as the whole answer. This only gives estimated maximum heart rate (HRmax), not the training zone. WJEC questions usually ask for lower and upper limits of the aerobic training zone, which are about 60-80% of HRmax.

For a 15-year-old, HRmax = 220 – 15 = 205 bpm. The aerobic training zone is 60% to 80% of 205, so 123 to 164 bpm. If the question asks for a 70% target, calculate 205 × 0.70 = 143.5, which rounds to 144 bpm.

4. Aerobic and Anaerobic Energy Systems |

A frequent mistake is saying ‘aerobic respiration starts at the beginning of all exercise and anaerobic only starts later’. In fact, all three energy systems are active from the start, but the contribution depends on intensity and duration. Anaerobic systems dominate short, high-intensity efforts; aerobic systems dominate long, moderate efforts.

For WJEC answers, use the terms ATP-PC system (or phosphocreatine system) for 0-10 seconds, anaerobic glycolytic system (lactic acid system) for roughly 10-60 seconds of high intensity, and aerobic system for longer submaximal work. Do not write ‘lactic acid causes cramp’ as a definite cause; cramps are multifactorial.

5. Muscle Contractions and Movement |

Many candidates incorrectly state that every time a muscle contracts it shortens and causes movement. Isometric contractions generate force without changing length and do not produce visible movement, such as holding a plank or gripping a racket. Isotonic contractions include concentric (shortening) and eccentric (lengthening) phases.

When describing a biceps curl, the upward phase is concentric contraction of the biceps brachii, while the downward controlled phase is eccentric contraction of the same muscle. The triceps brachii acts as the antagonist. Do not say ‘the muscle relaxes’ during the eccentric phase; it is still contracting under tension.

6. Levers in Sport |

Another common misconception is confusing the lever class. In a third-class lever, the effort is between the fulcrum and the load, as in a biceps curl at the elbow. Many students mislabel this as a first-class lever because they only look at the middle position of the muscle.

Use the acronym FLE: 1st class has Fulcrum in the middle, 2nd class has Load in the middle, 3rd class has Effort in the middle. In sport: a see-saw is first class, standing calf raise is second class, and a biceps curl or throwing action at the elbow is third class. The third-class lever allows a large range of movement and speed at the expense of force.

7. Skill Classification |

Candidates often place skills on one continuum but ignore that classification is based on specific criteria and context. Open skills are performed in unpredictable environments, closed skills in stable environments. Gross skills use large muscle groups; fine skills use small muscle groups for precision. A skill like passing in football can change category depending on the situation.

For WJEC answers, always justify the classification. A tennis serve is mainly closed and gross because the environment is stable and large muscles are used, but a return of serve is open because the player must react to the opponent’s placement. Similarly, a dart throw is fine and closed; a rugby tackle is gross and open.

8. Feedback and Guidance |

A typical misconception is that beginners learn best from intrinsic feedback because it develops feel. In fact, novices need extrinsic feedback (coach, video, results) because they lack the internal reference to judge their own performance. Intrinsic feedback becomes more useful as the performer develops kinaesthetic awareness.

Pair feedback types with guidance. Visual guidance (demonstration) suits beginners; verbal guidance should be short and clear; manual/mechanical guidance can build confidence but should be reduced to avoid over-reliance. Knowledge of results is useful for early learning; knowledge of performance is more useful for refining technique later.

9. Nutrition and Hydration |

Many students write ‘drink as much water as possible before exercise’ as a blanket rule. Overhydration can lead to hyponatremia (dangerously low sodium). Hydration should be planned: drink regularly before, during and after exercise according to sweat loss, not forcing excessive amounts. Carbohydrate drinks are useful for endurance events over about 60 minutes, not for short exercise.

For WJEC questions, mention carbo-loading only for endurance events lasting 90 minutes or more, not for a 100 m sprint. Also state that protein is needed for repair and growth, fats provide energy for low-intensity endurance
