📚 IGCSE CAIE Philosophy: Core Knowledge Points | IGCSE CAIE

Philosophy is the activity of critically examining fundamental assumptions about existence, knowledge, value, reason, mind and language. In Cambridge IGCSE Philosophy (0403), students are not expected to memorise facts; they are expected to identify concepts, reconstruct arguments and evaluate competing views. The syllabus is divided into Paper 1 themes such as knowledge, reality, self and religion, and Paper 2 themes such as ethics, justice, liberty and rights. This article summarises the core knowledge points you need to revise effectively.

1. What Is Philosophy? |

Philosophy is not a body of settled facts but a method of thinking. Its questions are foundational: “What can I know?”, “Do I have free will?”, “Does God exist?”, “What makes an action right?” In IGCSE CAIE Philosophy, you are assessed on understanding of concepts, clarity of explanation, and strength of evaluation, not on reaching a particular conclusion.

A philosophical answer should define key terms, show awareness of alternative positions, and support a judgement with reasons. For example, when discussing whether we have free will, you need to explain determinism, libertarianism and compatibilism, then evaluate them.

2. Branches of Philosophy |

Metaphysics asks what reality is and whether things such as time, causation and universals exist. Epistemology asks what knowledge is, how it is acquired, and whether certainty is possible. Ethics asks how we ought to live and what makes actions right or wrong. Philosophy of religion asks whether God exists and whether religious belief can be rational. Philosophy of mind examines consciousness, mental states and personal identity. Political philosophy examines the justification of state authority, justice, liberty and rights.

These branches often overlap. A question about God’s existence is in philosophy of religion, but it may use epistemology to ask whether faith counts as knowledge, and ethics to ask whether God’s commands define goodness. Recognising the branch helps you identify relevant arguments in the exam.

3. Argument and Reasoning |

An argument is a set of statements in which premises are intended to support a conclusion. In standard form, we write the premises first and the conclusion last. For example: Premise 1: All humans are mortal. Premise 2: Socrates is human. Conclusion: Therefore, Socrates is mortal. This is a structure you must be able to reconstruct in exam passages.

Premise indicators include since, because, given that, and as. Conclusion indicators include therefore, thus, so, consequently, and it follows that. Identifying these words helps you separate reasons from the main claim. A single statement is not an argument; an argument always needs at least one premise and a conclusion.

前提指示词包括 since、because、given that 和 as。结论指示词包括 therefore、thus、so、consequently 和 it follows that。

4. Deductive and Inductive Arguments |

Deductive arguments aim at certainty. If the premises are true, the conclusion must be true. A famous valid form is modus ponens: P → Q, P, therefore Q. Another is modus tollens: P → Q, ¬Q, therefore ¬P. For example: If God exists, then objective moral values exist; objective moral values exist; therefore God exists. This is actually modus ponens, but the second premise is strong? Wait: The example for modus tollens would be: If it rains, the ground is wet; the ground is not wet; therefore it did not rain.

Inductive arguments aim at probability. They include generalising from observed cases and arguing to the best explanation. For example: Every swan observed so far has been white; therefore all swans are probably white. Even if the premise is true, the conclusion can still be false; new evidence can weaken an inductive argument.

5. Validity, Soundness and Cogency |

Validity concerns the form of a deductive argument. A deductive argument is valid if and only if it is impossible for the premises to be true and the conclusion false. In symbols, validity means ¬◇(P1 ∧ P2 ∧ … ∧ ¬C), where ◇ means “it is possible that”. Validity does not require the premises to be actually true.

Soundness requires two things: the argument must be valid, and all premises must be true. A sound argument therefore guarantees a true conclusion. For inductive arguments, the parallel terms are strength and cogency. A strong inductive argument makes its conclusion probable if the premises are true; a cogent argument is strong and has true premises.

6. Common Fallacies |

A fallacy is an error in reasoning that makes an argument weak or invalid. Common fallacies in IGCSE CAIE Philosophy include ad hominem, straw man, false dilemma, begging the question, and slippery slope. Recognising them is essential for evaluation questions.

Ad hominem attacks the person instead of the argument: “You are wrong because you are too young.” Straw man misrepresents an opponent’s view: “You support animal welfare, so you think dogs should have the same rights as humans.” False dilemma presents only two options when more are possible: “Either you are with us or against us.” Begging the question assumes what it needs to prove: “God exists because the Bible says so, and the Bible is the word of God.” Slippery slope claims one step will inevitably lead to an extreme: “If we allow voluntary euthanasia, murder will soon become legal.”
