IGCSE CAIE Psychology: Essay Writing Frameworks and Model Answers | IGCSE CAIE 心理学:论文写作框架与范文

📚 IGCSE CAIE Psychology: Essay Writing Frameworks and Model Answers | IGCSE CAIE 心理学:论文写作框架与范文

For many IGCSE CAIE Psychology candidates, the extended-response questions are where marks are won or lost. A clear writing framework turns scattered knowledge into structured, examiner-friendly answers. This guide gives you reusable frameworks, key mark-scheme logic, and three annotated model answers at the 6-mark, 9-mark, and 12-mark levels.

对许多 IGCSE CAIE 心理学考生来说,扩展简答题是得分关键。清晰的写作框架能把零散知识转化为结构严谨、符合评分标准的答案。本指南提供可复用的写作框架、核心评分逻辑,以及 6 分、9 分和 12 分三个等级的范文与点评。

1. Understanding the CAIE Psychology Essay Command Words | 理解 CAIE 心理学论文指令词

In IGCSE CAIE Psychology, every essay question starts with a command word. ‘Describe’ asks for accurate detail, ‘explain’ asks for reasons or mechanisms, and ‘discuss’ or ‘evaluate’ asks for balanced judgement. Misreading the command word is the most common cause of lost marks.

在 IGCSE CAIE 心理学中,每道论文题都以指令词开头。”Describe” 要求准确描述细节,”explain” 要求给出原因或机制,”discuss” 或 “evaluate” 要求进行平衡判断。误读指令词是失分最常见的原因。

Command Word What It Means Examiner Expectation
Describe Give a detailed account of a study, theory, or process. Accurate aim, procedure, results, and conclusion; no evaluation needed.
Explain Give reasons or show how and why something happens. Link a study or theory to the question, making the mechanism clear.
Evaluate Make judgements about strengths and weaknesses. Consider validity, reliability, ethics, usefulness, and alternative explanations.
Discuss Present both sides or several points, then reach a conclusion. Balanced argument with evidence on both sides and a justified final judgement.

Always circle the command word before you plan. If the question says ‘discuss’, do not write a one-sided description; if it says ‘describe’, do not waste time evaluating.

动笔前先圈出指令词。如果题目是 “discuss”,不要写成单方面的描述;如果题目是 “describe”,不要浪费时间进行评价。

2. The Four-Step Essay Framework (PEEEL) | 四步论文框架 (PEEEL)

The PEEEL framework gives every paragraph a clear job: Point, Evidence, Explain, Evaluate, and Link. You do not need all five elements in every answer, but you should match the depth to the mark tariff.

PEEEL 框架让每一段都有明确任务:Point(观点)、Evidence(证据)、Explain(解释)、Evaluate(评价)和 Link(回扣题目)。不必每题都写全五个要素,但深度必须与分值匹配。

  • Point – State the idea or argument in one sentence. Points must answer the question directly.
  • Evidence – Support the point with a named study, theory, or research finding. Use precise details such as percentages, conditions, or sample sizes.
  • Explain – Show how the evidence supports the point. Use linking phrases such as ‘This suggests that…’ or ‘This supports the theory because…’.
  • Evaluate – For higher-mark questions, add a strength or weakness: is the evidence valid, reliable, generalisable, ethical?
  • Link – End by returning to the question. This keeps the answer focused and relevant.

For a 6-mark ‘describe’ question, use Point + Evidence + Explain briefly. For a 9-mark ‘explain’ question, use Point + Evidence + Explain with deeper linking. For a 12-mark ‘discuss’ or ‘evaluate’ question, use full PEEEL in at least two balanced paragraphs, then a conclusion.

6 分 “describe” 题可简要使用 Point + Evidence + Explain;9 分 “explain” 题需要更深入的 Evidence 和 Explain;12 分 “discuss” 或 “evaluate” 题则至少用两个平衡段落完整展开 PEEEL,最后再写结论。

3. Deconstructing a 6-Mark ‘Describe’ Question | 拆解 6 分“描述”题

A typical 6-mark describe question asks you to describe a study or a concept. Marks are usually awarded for accurate aim, procedure, results, and conclusion. You do not need to evaluate.

典型的 6 分描述题要求描述一项研究或一个概念。分数通常按研究目的、程序、结果和结论分配。你不需要进行评价。

Example question: ‘Describe one study of obedience (6 marks).’ The examiner is looking for approximately: 1 mark for the aim, 2-3 marks for the procedure, 2 marks for the findings, and 1 mark for the conclusion. The answer must include specific details, not vague statements.

例题:”Describe one study of obedience (6 marks).” 考官希望看到:研究目的约 1 分,程序 2-3 分,结果 2 分,结论 1 分。答案必须包含具体细节,而不是笼统表述。

  • Name the researcher and year, e.g. Milgram (1963).
  • State the aim in one sentence.
  • Describe the procedure with key numbers, conditions, or materials.
  • Report the main findings accurately.
  • Add a short conclusion if the mark scheme rewards it.

Do not describe two studies when the question asks for one. Do not include evaluation unless the command word says ‘evaluate’ or ‘discuss’.

题目要求一项研究时,不要写两项研究。除非指令词是 “evaluate” 或 “discuss”,否则不要加入评价内容。

4. Structuring a 9-Mark ‘Explain’ Question | 构建 9 分“解释”题

A 9-mark explain question requires you to use a study or theory to explain a psychological idea. The mark scheme rewards clear reasoning and specific links between evidence and the question.

9 分解释题要求用一项研究或理论来解释一个心理学观点。评分标准奖励清晰的推理,以及证据与问题之间的具体联系。

Example question: ‘Explain how one study supports the idea of reconstructive memory (9 marks).’ A strong answer should have a clear point about reconstructive memory, a detailed study as evidence, and at least two explanation links that connect the findings back to the theory.

例题:”Explain how one study supports the idea of reconstructive memory (9 marks).” 高分答案应包含关于重构记忆的明确观点、作为证据的详细研究,以及至少两处将结果联系回理论的解释。

Use this structure:

  • Point: State the theory or idea in one sentence.
  • Evidence: Describe a relevant study with enough detail (aim, procedure, results).
  • Explain: Link specific results to the theory. For example, ‘The distortions occurred because participants actively reconstructed the story using their own cultural schemas.’
  • Link: End by saying why this supports the idea in the question.

Avoid simply retelling the study. The explanation links, not the description, are what move you from 6 marks to 9 marks.

避免只是复述研究。解释性的联系,而不是单纯描述,才是从 6 分提高到 9 分的关键。

5. Mastering the 12-Mark ‘Discuss/Evaluate’ Essay | 掌握 12 分“讨论/评价”论文

A 12-mark discuss or evaluate essay tests your ability to build a balanced argument. You must present both sides, support each side with evidence, evaluate the quality of that evidence, and finish with a justified conclusion.

12 分讨论或评价题考查你构建平衡论证的能力。你必须呈现正反两面,用证据支持每一面,评价证据的质量,最后给出有依据的结论。

Example question: ‘Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of laboratory experiments as a research method in psychology (12 marks).’ A top-level answer might include an introduction, two strengths, two weaknesses, an evaluation of methodology, and a conclusion.

例题:”Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of laboratory experiments as a research method in psychology (12 marks).” 高分答案可包括引言、两个优点、两个缺点、对方法学的评价以及结论。

Try this four-paragraph plan:

  • Introduction: Define the method and state your overall line of argument.
  • Strengths paragraph: Use one or two studies to show high control, cause-and-effect inference, and replicability.
  • Weaknesses paragraph: Use one or two studies to show low ecological validity, demand characteristics, or ethical issues.
  • Evaluation + conclusion: Weigh the evidence and give a final judgement that answers the question directly.

Every paragraph should begin with a clear point and end with a link back to the question. Do not write disconnected study summaries.

每一段都应以明确观点开头,并以回扣题目结尾。不要写成互不相关的研究摘要。

6. Using Studies as Evidence: The APRC Method | 用研究作为证据:APRC 法

APRC stands for Aim, Procedure, Results, and Conclusion. It is the fastest way to describe any core study accurately and relevantly. Many marks are lost because candidates describe a procedure but forget the results, or mention results without explaining the aim.

APRC 指 Aim(目的)、Procedure(程序)、Results(结果)和 Conclusion(结论)。这是准确、相关地描述任何核心研究的最快方法。很多考生丢分是因为只写了程序却忘记结果,或只提结果却不解释目的。

APRC Component Question It Answers Example from Loftus and Palmer (1974)
Aim Why was the study done? To test whether leading questions affect memory of an event.
Procedure What exactly did the researchers do? Participants watched car crash videos and were asked about speed using verbs such as ‘smashed’ or ‘hit’.
Results What did they find? The ‘smashed’ group estimated a higher average speed (about 41 mph) than the ‘hit’ group (about 34 mph).
Conclusion What does it mean? Leading questions can distort memory, supporting reconstructive memory theory.

When you use APRC, you automatically include the specific details examiners look for. Practise writing one APRC line for every core study you revise.

使用 APRC 法,你自然就会写出考官希望看到的具体细节。复习每一项核心研究时,都练习写一行 APRC。

7. Common Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them | 常见失分点及避免方法

High-performing candidates do not necessarily know more; they lose fewer marks by avoiding predictable errors. The following mistakes appear in examiner reports every year.

高分考生并不一定知道更多,而是通过避免可预测的错误来减少失分。以下错误每年都会出现在考官报告中。

  • Listing studies without linking them to the question. Always add a sentence such as ‘This shows that…’ after evidence.
  • Writing one-sided answers for discuss questions. Use ‘However’ to introduce the opposite side.
  • Describing procedures but omitting results. Results are often worth more marks than procedure.
  • Using vague phrases such as ‘people were asked questions’. Replace with precise verbs, numbers, or conditions.
  • Ignoring the conclusion in 12-mark essays. A justified final judgement is required for top band marks.
  • Repeating the question instead of answering it. Use the question wording once, then move on.

Before you submit, check that every paragraph answers the command word and includes at least one specific psychological detail.

提交答案前,检查每一段是否回应了指令词,并至少包含一个具体的心理学细节。

8. Model 6-Mark Answer with Commentary | 6 分范文与点评

Question: ‘Describe the procedure and findings of one study into obedience (6 marks).’

题目:”Describe the procedure and findings of one study into obedience (6 marks).”

Model answer (English): Milgram (1963) aimed to test whether ordinary people would obey an authority figure even when instructed to harm another person. He recruited 40 male participants through a newspaper advert and told them the study was about learning. Each participant was assigned the role of ‘teacher’ and asked to give electric shocks to a ‘learner’ (a confederate) in another room whenever he made a mistake. The shocks increased from 15V to 450V, and the experimenter gave verbal prods such as ‘Please continue’. Milgram found that 65% of participants continued to the full 450V, and all participants went to at least 300V. Many showed sweating, trembling, or nervous laughter, but still obeyed.

Commentary: This answer gains full marks because it includes the aim, precise procedure details (40 participants, 15V to 450V, verbal prods), accurate findings (65% and 300V), and a brief observation of participants’ distress. It does not evaluate, which is correct for a describe question.

点评:这个答案能拿满分,因为它包含研究目的、精确的程序细节(40 名参与者、15V 到 450V、口头催促)、准确的结果(65% 和 300V),以及对参与者痛苦表现的简要观察。它没有加入评价,这正符合描述题的要求。

9. Model 9-Mark Answer with Commentary | 9 分范文与点评

Question: ‘Explain how one study supports the idea of reconstructive memory (9 marks).’

题目:”Explain how one study supports the idea of reconstructive memory (9 marks).”

Paragraph 1 (English): Reconstructive memory theory suggests that memory is not a passive recording of events but an active process in which we rebuild memories using existing schemas. This means that when we try to remember, we fill in gaps and change details to fit what we already know and expect.

第 1 段中文:重构记忆理论认为,记忆不是对事件的被动记录,而是一个主动过程,我们会利用已有图式重建记忆。这意味着当我们试图回忆时,会填补空白并改变细节,使其符合我们已知和预期的内容。

Paragraph 2 (English): Bartlett (1932
