📚 IGCSE CAIE Sociology: Core Knowledge Points | IGCSE CAIE

Sociology is the systematic study of society, social groups and social structures. In the CAIE IGCSE Sociology course, students learn how sociologists ask questions, collect evidence and explain patterns of human behaviour.

1. Sociology and Key Perspectives |

Sociology examines how society shapes individuals and how individuals shape society through interaction. Key perspectives provide different lenses for analysing social life.

Functionalism sees society as a system of linked institutions that work together to maintain stability and value consensus. It is a consensus theory because it stresses shared norms.

Marxism focuses on class conflict between the bourgeoisie and the proletariat, arguing that economic inequality shapes social institutions and serves ruling-class interests.

Feminism highlights gender inequality and challenges male-dominated structures. Interactionism studies small-scale meanings, labels and interpretations in everyday life.

2. Research Methods |

Sociologists use primary data collected for a specific study and secondary data that already exists. Each type has strengths and limitations depending on the research question.

Quantitative data is numerical and useful for identifying patterns and making comparisons. Qualitative data is rich in meaning and explores feelings, motives and interpretations.

Common methods include questionnaires, structured and unstructured interviews, participant observation and official statistics. Researchers must balance validity, reliability, representativeness and ethical issues such as informed consent and confidentiality.

Sampling is important because sociologists rarely study whole populations. Random, stratified and quota sampling aim to produce representative samples. Triangulation combines methods to improve validity.

3. Culture and Socialisation |

Culture refers to the shared norms, values, beliefs, language and customs that characterise a society. Norms are specific rules of behaviour; values are general principles about what is desirable and undesirable.

Socialisation is the lifelong process through which individuals learn their culture. Primary socialisation occurs mainly in the family, while secondary socialisation is carried out by schools, peer groups, media and religion.

The debate between nature and nurture asks whether behaviour is mostly inherited or learned. Sociologists emphasise nurture, while recognising that biological influences interact with social environment.

Feral children and cases of extreme isolation provide evidence that normal development depends on social contact and cultural learning.

4. Identity and the Self |

Social identity is the way individuals see themselves in relation to groups such as class, gender, ethnicity, age and nationality. People can hold multiple and overlapping identities that change over time.

Interactionists describe the self as socially constructed through the looking-glass self: we develop a self-concept by imagining how others see us and reacting to their judgements.

Labels applied by others can become internalised, confirming a person’s identity in a self-fulfilling prophecy. This process is especially important in schools and in criminal justice settings.

Agencies of socialisation such as family, peer groups and media influence how individuals learn gendered, class-based and ethnic identities.

5. Social Stratification |

Social stratification is the hierarchical ranking of groups based on class, status, gender, ethnicity, age and other lines of difference. It shapes life chances such as income, health, education and housing.

Marx saw class as rooted in ownership of the means of production. Weber added status and party, arguing inequality is multidimensional and not only economic.

Functionalists argue stratification motivates people to fill important roles, while conflict theorists argue it benefits dominant groups and limits social mobility. Social mobility can be intergenerational or intragenerational.

Poverty can be absolute, meaning a lack of basic necessities, or relative, meaning living standards far below the average in a society. Gender and ethnicity also intersect with class to shape inequality.

6. Family | 家庭

The family is a primary social institution performing functions such as reproduction, socialisation, economic support and emotional care. Family forms include nuclear, extended, single-parent and reconstituted families.

Functionalists see the nuclear family as universal and functional for society. Feminists criticise the family as a site of gender inequality and unpaid domestic labour, especially for women.

Patterns of marriage, divorce and cohabitation have changed: divorce rates have risen in many societies, and family diversity has increased. Some sociologists call this the symmetrical family, where roles are more shared.

Changes in family structure are linked to wider social changes such as women’s employment, individualisation, changing laws and secularisation.

7. Education | 教育

Education transmits knowledge, skills and cultural values. It also selects and allocates individuals to future roles through qualifications, testing and streaming.

Functionalists stress the positive functions of education, such as promoting social solidarity and meritocratic selection. Marxists argue the hidden curriculum reproduces class inequality and legitimises capitalist hierarchy.

Achievement is influenced by social class, gender and ethnicity. Teacher expectations and labelling can produce self-fulfilling prophecies that widen attainment gaps between groups.

Material deprivation, such as poverty and poor housing, and cultural deprivation, such as lack of educational resources and attitudes, both contribute to underachievement.

8. Crime, Deviance and Social Control |

Deviance is behaviour that breaks social norms; crime is behaviour that breaks formal written laws. Definitions vary across time, place and social context.

Formal social control is carried out by police, courts and prisons. Informal social control operates through family, peer groups and community disapproval.

Official crime statistics may underreport crime because many offences are not reported or recorded. Sociologists use victim surveys and self-report studies to explore the dark figure of crime.

Theories of crime include functionalist strain theory, interactionist labelling theory, Marxist views of class and capitalism, and feminist critiques of male violence. White-collar crime is often less visible and less heavily punished.

9. Media | 媒体

The mass media include television, print, radio and digital platforms. They provide information, entertainment and interpretations of social events, and they play a key role in agenda-setting.

Ownership and control matter: concentration of media ownership can limit diversity of viewpoints and reflect the interests of powerful groups rather than the public interest.

Media can shape attitudes through agenda-setting, framing and the cultivation of stereotypes. It can also amplify deviance by exaggerating events and generating moral panics.

Digital media have increased audience participation, but access remains unequal, creating a digital divide linked to age, income and location.
