📚 IGCSE CAIE Sociology: High-Frequency Topics and Common Mistakes | IGCSE CAIE
The CAIE IGCSE Sociology syllabus tests much more than factual recall. Examiners repeatedly reward students who can define key concepts precisely, apply theories to contemporary examples, and evaluate competing perspectives. However, certain topics appear again and again in past papers, and many candidates lose marks on the same avoidable misunderstandings.
CAIE IGCSE
1. The Role of Theory: Structural vs Interpretive Approaches |
A high-frequency question asks you to distinguish between structural and interpretive approaches. Structural theories such as functionalism and Marxism see society as a system that shapes individuals, while interpretive theories such as interactionism focus on how individuals create meaning through everyday interaction.
A common mistake is to describe functionalism and Marxism as ‘the same’ because both are structural. In fact, functionalists emphasise value consensus and social stability, whereas Marxists emphasise class conflict and exploitation. You must show this difference in any 15-mark evaluation.
Another frequent error is using ‘social control’ as if it were always negative. Interactionists point out that informal social control through family and peers can be positive and internalised, not just imposed by the state.
In Paper 2 essays, weak answers often list theories without applying them to the item. Strong answers use phrases such as ‘from a functionalist perspective, the family in the item…’ or ‘a Marxist would interpret this statistic as…’.
2. Research Methods: Validity, Reliability and Sampling |
Candidates very often mix up validity and reliability. Validity asks whether the research measures what it claims to measure; reliability asks whether repeating the study would produce the same results. A qualitative interview may have high validity but low reliability.
Another classic error involves sampling. A random sample gives every member of the target population an equal chance of selection, whereas a stratified sample divides the population into groups and samples from each. Quota sampling is not the same as stratified sampling because the researcher selects whoever is available to fill a quota.
When evaluating questionnaires, do not claim they are ‘quick and easy’ without qualification. A closed questionnaire is quick to analyse but may force respondents into limited categories; an open questionnaire can produce richer data but is harder to quantify.
Also remember that a pilot study is used to test a research instrument before the main study, not to increase the sample size. This is a frequent misreading in past papers.
3. Primary and Secondary Socialisation |
The distinction between primary and secondary socialisation is a core high-frequency topic. Primary socialisation occurs mainly within the family during early childhood and involves learning language, basic norms and emotional bonds. Secondary socialisation happens later through agencies such as school, peer groups, media and religion.
A common mistake is to say that primary socialisation stops when a child starts school. In fact, the family continues to socialise children throughout adolescence, but other agencies become more important.
Another error is to treat feral children as proof that ‘genes matter more than nurture’. The correct sociological point is that feral children show the absence of socialisation, and therefore demonstrate the importance of nurture in human development, though sociologists do not deny biological factors.
Also, socialisation is not simply a one-way process. Interpretivists stress that children and adults actively negotiate roles; they are not passive sponges.
4. Culture, Norms and Values: Avoiding Ethnocentrism |
IGCSE Sociology questions frequently ask about norms, values, culture and subculture. Norms are specific rules of behaviour in particular situations; values are broader beliefs about what is desirable. Culture is the whole way of life of a group, including both material
