📚 IGCSE CAIE Sociology: Practical Investigation Skills and Assessment Essentials | IGCSE CAIE
Many students expect IGCSE Sociology to include experiments or a practical examination, but the CAIE 0495 syllabus does not have a laboratory-based practical paper. Instead, practical investigation skills are tested through research methods questions, source-based tasks and data interpretation in the written papers. This guide summarises the essential skills and common assessment points.
Examiners expect you to show that you can design a small study, choose methods appropriately, recognise strengths and limitations, and evaluate evidence rather than simply memorise definitions.
1. What ‘Practical’ Means in IGCSE Sociology | IGCSE
CAIE IGCSE Sociology does not require a laboratory experiment or fieldwork portfolio. Instead, “practical” skill means being able to design a small research study, choose suitable methods, interpret data and evaluate evidence as shown in written examination questions.
CAIE IGCSE
Questions often give a source, such as a table of questionnaire results or a description of an interview, and ask you to identify methods, strengths, weaknesses or ethical issues.
2. Understanding Primary and Secondary Data |
Primary data are collected first-hand by the researcher for the specific purpose of the study, such as questionnaires, interviews, observations or experiments. Secondary data already exist, such as official statistics, school records, newspapers, diaries or previous research.
Primary data can be designed to fit the research question and are usually more valid, but they take time, money and access. Secondary data are cheaper and quicker to obtain, but may be biased, outdated or not exactly match the research aim.
3. Quantitative and Qualitative Methods |
Quantitative data are numerical and can be presented in charts or statistics. They often come from questionnaires with closed questions, structured interviews, official statistics and experiments.
Qualitative data are descriptive and explore meanings, feelings and interpretations. They come from unstructured interviews, open questions, participant observation and personal documents.
| High reliability, easier to repeat | 信度高、易重复 | High validity, rich detail | 效度高、细节丰富 |
| May miss subjective experience | 可能忽略主观体验 | Hard to generalise, time-consuming | 难以推广、耗时 |
Positivists favour quantitative methods because they see society as patterned and measurable. Interpretivists prefer qualitative methods because they focus on how people construct meaning.
4. Sampling and Representativeness |
The sampling frame is the list from which a sample is drawn, such as a school register. A sample is a smaller group chosen to represent the wider target population.
- Random sample – everyone has an equal chance of selection. |
- Stratified sample – population divided into groups, then sampled proportionally. |
- Systematic sample – every nth person is selected.
- Quota sample – researcher selects individuals to meet fixed characteristics. |
- Snowball sample – participants recruit others; useful for hard-to-reach groups. |
A representative sample allows findings to be generalised to the wider population. Sampling bias occurs when some groups are over- or under-represented.
5. Questionnaires: Design and Evaluation |
Questionnaires are lists of written questions sent or given to respondents. They can be closed questions with fixed answers or open questions allowing free responses.
Practical strengths include low cost, wide geographical reach, anonymity and standardised wording, which improves reliability. However, response rates can be low, questions may be misunderstood, and closed questions may force answers that lack validity.
A pilot study is a small trial run used to test and improve the questionnaire before the main survey.
6. Interviews: Structured, Semi-structured and Unstructured |
Structured interviews use a fixed interview schedule and are like spoken questionnaires, producing quantitative data that are easy to compare. Unstructured interviews are guided conversations that produce in-depth qualitative data. Semi-structured interviews combine fixed questions with flexible follow-up questions.
