📚 IGCSE Cambridge Media Studies: Exam Techniques and Marking Criteria | IGCSE

This guide breaks down how Cambridge IGCSE Media Studies is marked and how to write answers that match what examiners expect. Whether you are analysing a film poster, a news website, a magazine cover or an opening sequence, clear terminology and a structured response make the difference between a mid-level answer and a top-band answer.

1. Exam Structure and Assessment Objectives |

Start with the map: Cambridge IGCSE Media Studies (0947) normally has a written paper, often titled Exploring Media, and a production portfolio. The written paper contains short answer questions and extended response questions based on unseen or set media texts.

Examiners award marks across assessment objectives. You do not get a separate ‘AO score’ printed on the paper, but every question links to one or more objectives: AO1 tests knowledge of concepts and contexts, AO2 tests analysis and evaluation, AO3 tests production creativity in coursework.

2. Command Words: Describe, Explain, Analyse, Evaluate | 指令词:Describe、Explain、Analyse、Evaluate

Command words tell you the depth required. Never treat ‘identify’ like ‘analyse’. A short answer that only names a convention cannot earn the same marks as one that explains its effect.

Command word What to do 中文含义
Identify Name one element briefly; no explanation needed.
Describe Give characteristics of what is seen or heard.
Explain Say why or how something works, with reasons.
Analyse Break down the text using media language and comment on effect.
Evaluate Make a judgement about success, significance or effectiveness.

For ‘analyse’, examiners expect media terminology and a comment on effect. For ‘evaluate’, add judgement: how successful is the product, and why.

3. Media Language: Camera, Editing, Sound, Mise-en-scène |

A strong media language answer moves from denotation to connotation. First say what you see or hear, then explain what it suggests and why the producer made that choice.

For a moving image text, cover camerawork (shot size, angle, movement), mise-en-scène (costume, lighting, setting, props), editing (pace, transitions, shot order) and sound (diegetic/non-diegetic, music, dialogue).

  • Close-up reveals emotion and invites audience identification.
  • Low-angle shot connotes power or dominance.
  • Fast cutting creates excitement or panic; slow cutting builds calm or tension.

4. Representation and Stereotypes |

Representation is never neutral. Media texts select and edit reality to construct a version of a person, group or issue. Identify who is represented, by whom, for which audience, and whether the representation reinforces or challenges a stereotype.

Aim for two layers: describe the representation, then link it to context, values or ideology. For example, a cleaning product advert showing only women doing housework may reinforce traditional gender roles, while a campaign with a male caregiver may challenge them.

Use selection, omission, mediation, construction and stereotype as explicit vocabulary. This shows the examiner you understand representation as a process, not a reflection of reality.

5. Audience and Institution |

Audience questions ask how a media text targets, appeals to, or influences specific groups. Use terms such as demographic, psychographic, target audience, preferred reading, oppositional reading, uses and gratifications.

Institution or industry questions focus on how a product is made, funded, distributed and regulated. Mention public service vs commercial, convergence, synergy, or regulatory bodies where relevant.

Always explain why an audience responds in a certain way. For example, a teenage target audience may read a social media advert differently from an older audience because of platform familiarity and peer influence.

6. Narrative and Genre |

For narrative, use concepts such as linear/non-linear, enigma, equilibrium, disequilibrium, action and enigma codes, binary oppositions, and character roles from Propp. For genre, discuss iconography, conventions, hybrids and audience expectations.

Do not just list conventions; explain their function. A horror film uses low-key lighting not only to look dark, but to create fear and hide the threat.

Show how narrative or genre choices fit the product’s purpose and audience. A linear narrative may make a public information film clearer, while a non-linear opening may create puzzle-like excitement for a streaming drama.

7. PEEL Paragraphs for High Marks | 高分 PEEL 段落结构

For extended answers, use PEEL: Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link. This structure helps you keep each paragraph focused and examiners can see your line of reasoning.

Example point: The poster uses a low-angle shot to present the protagonist as powerful. Evidence: The camera is positioned below eye level looking up at the character. Explanation: This makes the character appear larger and dominant, reinforcing the action genre convention of a heroic lead. Link: This helps attract the target audience of young male viewers who expect strength and control.

Each PEEL paragraph should make one clear point. If you add a second point, start a new paragraph instead of blurring two ideas together.

8. Common Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them | 常见失分点与规避方法

Avoid description without analysis. Writing ‘the colours are bright’ is not enough; add ‘the bright colours connote energy and appeal to a youth audience’.

  • No media terminology: name shot sizes, camera angles, editing pace, sound types.
  • No examples from the text: quote or describe a specific visual or audio detail.
  • Ignoring the question: if it asks for audience, do not write only about camera work.
  • Representation as fact: say ‘this constructs an idea of…’ rather than ‘this shows reality’.

9. Time Management and Planning |

Plan before you write. Read the question twice, underline command words and key media text details, then spend 2-3 minutes making a quick bullet plan.

Divide time by marks: if a question is worth 8 marks, do not spend three pages on it and leave the 15-mark question unfinished. A common rule is one minute per mark, plus planning time.

For extended questions, write a short introduction that states your argument, then use PEEL paragraphs, and end with a one-sentence conclusion if time allows.

10. Production Coursework Marking Criteria |

In the production portfolio, examiners usually mark three broad areas: research and planning, production skills and use of media language, and evaluation or reflective commentary.

Your product must show a clear target audience, a consistent genre or message, and deliberate
