Cambridge IGCSE Physical Education combines anatomy and physiology, movement analysis, health, fitness, training, and skill acquisition. Students often lose marks not because they do not know the facts, but because they confuse similar terms or cannot apply definitions to practical examples. This article reviews high-frequency exam topics, highlights common misunderstandings, and gives concise corrections.

The skeleton has five main functions: support, protection, movement, mineral storage, and blood cell production. Long bones act as levers, flat bones protect organs, and irregular bones such as vertebrae support the spine.

A common mistake is to list only support, protection, and movement, forgetting mineral storage and blood cell production. Synovial joints are freely movable joints that contain synovial fluid, cartilage, a joint capsule, and ligaments. The two most tested examples are the hinge joint, such as the elbow and knee, and the ball-and-socket joint, such as the shoulder and hip.

Muscles pull, they never push. Movement occurs when an agonist contracts and its antagonist relaxes. For example, when flexing the elbow, the biceps is the agonist and the triceps is the antagonist; when extending the elbow, the roles reverse.

A common error is to think all contractions shorten the muscle or to forget that eccentric contractions occur when lowering a weight slowly.

cardiac output = heart rate × stroke volume
