IGCSE Cambridge Physical Education: Practical Assessment Key Points | IGCSE

📚 IGCSE Cambridge Physical Education: Practical Assessment Key Points | IGCSE

In Cambridge IGCSE Physical Education, the practical assessment is not just a short skills test. It carries 50% of the final grade and requires you to show sustained, applied performance in four physical activities across at least two of the seven official categories. This component is marked internally by your school and then moderated by Cambridge, so both your performance and the evidence your centre collects will shape your final result.

1. Understanding the Practical Component |

The practical component, officially called Component 2: Coursework, is worth 50% of the Cambridge IGCSE Physical Education qualification. You are assessed in four physical activities, and each activity is marked out of 25, giving a total of 100 marks. The activities must be chosen from at least two of the seven categories, which prevents candidates from specialising too narrowly.

It is important to understand that practical assessment is not a one-off performance. Teachers observe your work over a period of time, often during normal lessons or club training. They look for consistency, decision-making, tactical understanding and the ability to apply skills under pressure, rather than simply performing a trick once in isolation.

2. Selecting Your Four Activities |

Choose activities you already perform regularly and where you can provide strong evidence. It is much better to select three or four activities you know well than to add an unfamiliar sport just because it looks impressive. Your teacher must be able to observe clear, repeated performance, so availability of practice and competition is essential.

Also think about balance. If you choose four team games, you may find it harder to demonstrate individual technical detail than if you include an individual activity such as swimming, athletics or gymnastics. A mix of individual and team activities can give you more opportunities to score across different skill areas.

You should discuss your choices with your PE teacher early in the course. The teacher can confirm whether the activity is acceptable under the syllabus, whether the necessary evidence can be recorded, and whether you are likely to meet the marking criteria.

3. Category Rules and Combinations |

Cambridge IGCSE Physical Education organises practical activities into seven categories. You must present four activities from at least two categories. This rule means you cannot, for example, use four different games as your only category and still meet the requirement.

The seven categories are shown below. Use this table to check your proposed combination before you finalise your choices.

A valid combination could be football (Games), badminton (Games), athletics (Athletic Activities) and swimming (Swimming). This gives four activities from three categories, so it clearly meets the two-category minimum. If you are in doubt, ask your teacher to check against the current Cambridge syllabus list.

4. Assessment Marking Criteria |

Each activity is marked out of 25 using a generic mark scheme. Although the details vary by activity, the same broad criteria are applied: range of skills, quality of execution, consistency, decision-making, tactical awareness, physical fitness and application in competitive or performance situations.

The typical mark bands are summarised below. Use these descriptors to understand what the examiner or moderator is looking for when watching your evidence.

21-25 Excellent performance: advanced skills performed consistently under pressure, strong tactical decisions, high fitness |
16-20 Good performance: good skill level with occasional errors, effective decisions, good fitness |
11-15 Satisfactory: competent basic skills, some consistency, contributes to a game or routine |
6-10 Basic: can perform some skills in isolation, limited application in competitive situations |
1-5 Very limited: little relevant skill, weak performance with limited understanding |
0 No evidence of performance |

To reach the top bands, you must show more than isolated drills. Moderators want to see you using skills in a game, routine or competitive environment where decisions matter and pressure is real. This is the biggest difference between a basic mark and an excellent mark.

5. Key Skills Assessed |

Across all activities, assessors look at four main areas. First, technical skills: how accurately and consistently you perform core techniques such as passing, shooting, stroke technique, landing, throwing or striking. Second, tactical awareness: how well you read the game or situation, select the right option and adjust to opponents or conditions.

Third, decision-making: whether you choose the right skill at the right time, and whether you can solve problems under pressure. Fourth, physical fitness: the relevant strength, speed, endurance, flexibility and coordination needed to perform the activity at a high level. These areas are not marked separately but are woven into the overall judgement.

For example, in a basketball assessment, a high-scoring candidate would show controlled dribbling with both hands, accurate passing under defensive pressure, correct shooting technique, active off-ball movement, defensive positioning and smart transition decisions. Doing a few skills well in a drill is not enough if they disappear in a game.

6. Evidence Collection and Video Requirements |

Cambridge expects centres to collect strong evidence for each candidate. In most cases this means video recordings of your performances in each activity. The video must show you clearly, often with a number or bib so the moderator can identify you. It should include enough context: warm-up, skill work, conditioned practices and full competitive situations where possible.

For team games, avoid filming only the ball. The camera should be positioned so that your movement, positioning and decisions are visible even when you do not have possession. For individual activities, record from angles that show technique clearly, such as side view for running or swimming strokes.

You also need supporting paperwork such as activity logs, scores, times, distances, competition records and teacher observation notes. These help the moderator understand the context of each performance and confirm that the work is your own.

7. Internal Marking and External Moderation |

Your PE department marks the practical work using the Cambridge mark scheme. This is called internal assessment. Teachers must standardise their marking across different classes and teachers so that the same standard is applied fairly. Many schools hold internal moderation meetings and compare sample videos.

Cambridge then moderates the marks. The moderator may visit your centre to observe assessments, or the centre may submit a sample of video evidence and marking sheets. The moderator checks whether the school’s marks are too high, too low or appropriate, and can adjust the whole cohort if necessary.

This process means your own performance must be genuine and well documented. If the evidence does not support the mark, the mark can be reduced. That is why consistent, clear video evidence is just as important as performing well on the day.

8. Safety, Rules and Officiating |

Safety is a fundamental part of practical assessment. You must follow the correct safety procedures for your activity, including warm-up, equipment checks, appropriate clothing and safe use of facilities. In activities like trampolining, swimming or combat sports, failure to follow safety rules can result in the assessment being stopped.

Understanding rules and officiating also contributes to your mark. You should know the rules of your chosen activities, apply them fairly, and show respect for officials, opponents and team-mates. In some game assessments, your ability to accept decisions and maintain discipline is part of the overall impression.

If you are acting as a referee or official in a peer assessment, you can often demonstrate this knowledge directly. However, your performance as a competitor remains the main focus, so do not sacrifice playing time just to officiate.

9. Common Mistakes That Lose Marks |

One major mistake is choosing activities you have not played or practised enough. A candidate who plays football regularly but suddenly adds rock climbing without proper training is unlikely to score well. Stick with activities where you can show repeated, confident performance.

Another mistake is providing poor video evidence. If the camera is too far away, only follows the ball, or the candidate cannot be identified, the moderator may not be able to confirm the mark. Always check the footage after recording and make sure the evidence shows your full contribution.

Some candidates focus only on isolated skills and forget to show tactical decisions or fitness. They do ten perfect passes in a drill, but in the game they hide from the ball or run out of stamina. Top marks require applying skills in context, not just performing them in closed drills.

Finally, leaving evidence collection to the last minute often causes problems. If you are ill or injured near the assessment deadline, you may not have enough recorded performance. Record regularly throughout the course so that you always have a strong evidence bank.

10. Training and Practice Strategies |

Use deliberate practice rather than just playing for fun. Identify the specific skills in your chosen activities that need improvement, and create drills that target those areas. For example, if your weak point in badminton is backhand clear, practise that stroke with a partner or coach until it becomes consistent.

Conditioned games are especially useful because they force you to use skills under constraints. In football, play 3v3 in a small area to improve quick passing and decision-making. In netball, restrict time on the ball to speed up choices. This bridges the gap between drills and open competition.

Record your practice sessions and review them against the mark scheme. Compare your movement, technique and decisions with the top-band descriptors. Ask your teacher or coach to point out two or three specific improvements each week, then work on them consistently.

11. Assessment Day Preparation |

Before any assessed performance, complete a proper warm-up that includes pulse-raising activity, dynamic stretching and sport-specific drills. This reduces injury risk and helps you start at a higher intensity. Arrive early, check your equipment, and confirm the assessment tasks or conditions with your teacher.

During the assessment, stay positive and communicate with team-mates or assessors where appropriate. Do not panic if one skill goes wrong. Recover quickly and continue to show effort, decision-making and tactical awareness. Assessors reward resilience and the ability to stay in the performance.

After the session, cool down and reflect briefly. Make notes on what went well and what you would change. This reflection will help you prepare better for the next assessment and give your teacher useful information for feedback.

12. Using Feedback to Improve |

Feedback is the fastest way to raise your practical marks, but only if you act on it. After each assessed or filmed session, ask your teacher to identify
