1. Understanding the CCEA Geography Assessment Structure | 理解 CCEA 地理评估结构
CCEA Geography is organised into three main units. Unit 1, Understanding Our Natural World, focuses on physical geography topics such as rivers, coasts, weather and ecosystems. Unit 2, Living in Our World, covers human geography topics such as population, settlement, development and resources. Unit 3 is a fieldwork unit that tests your ability to plan, present and evaluate geographical data.
Each written paper contains a mixture of short-answer, structured and extended-response questions. Unit 1 and Unit 2 are each worth 40% of the overall qualification, while Unit 3 is worth 20%. Knowing this weighting helps you decide how much time and energy to invest in each topic during revision.
- Unit 1: Understanding Our Natural World – 40%
- Unit 2: Living in Our World – 40%
- Unit 3: Fieldwork – 20%
2. Command Words and What They Mean |
Command words tell you exactly what the examiner wants. Many candidates lose marks because they describe when they should explain, or list points when they should evaluate. Before writing, underline the command word and link it to the mark tariff.
| Command word | What it asks you to do | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Describe | Say what you see or state characteristics | Describe the distribution of earthquakes. |
| Explain | Give reasons, causes or processes | Explain why population density varies. |
| Compare | Identify similarities and differences | Compare the impacts of two earthquakes. |
| Evaluate | Weigh up strengths and weaknesses, then judge | Evaluate the effectiveness of flood defences. |
| Justify | Give evidence to support a choice | Justify the location of a new wind farm. |
| Assess | Consider importance or value, then judge | Assess the social impacts of tourism. |
| Suggest | Apply knowledge to a new context | Suggest why a river floods after heavy rain. |
| To what extent | Consider both sides and reach a conclusion | To what extent are earthquakes more destructive in poorer countries? |
To hit top bands, use the command word as your sentence starter. For ‘explain’, use linking phrases such as ‘this leads to’ or ‘as a result’. For ‘evaluate’, build in strengths, weaknesses and a final judgement.
3. Using the Mark Scheme as a Checklist |
CCEA mark schemes break performance into three assessment objectives. AO1 tests knowledge and recall, AO2 tests understanding and application, and AO3 tests analysis and evaluation. Extended answers often carry marks across all three objectives, so a one-sided factual answer cannot reach the highest level.
| Assessment objective | What it means | How to gain marks |
|---|---|---|
| AO1 | Knowledge | Recall accurate facts, terms, case study detail. |
| AO2 | Understanding and application | Show cause and effect, link ideas, apply concepts. |
| AO3 | Analysis and evaluation | Compare, assess, justify, conclude. |
Before you write a longer answer, read the mark scheme or self-made checklist and identify what kind of evidence is required. For example, a 9-mark ‘evaluate’ question may give 3 marks for AO1, 3 for AO2 and 3 for AO3. This tells you that factual recall alone cannot earn more than 3 marks.
4. Levels-of-Response Marking |
For extended 6-9 mark questions, CCEA examiners use levels-of-response marking. They place your answer in a level band based on the quality of explanation, use of place-specific detail and evaluation. Moving from Level 1 to Level 3 is not just about writing more; it is about writing better.
| Level | Typical descriptor | How to reach it |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Simple statements, limited relevant knowledge | Name one or two basic facts without explaining them. |
| Level 2 | Clear explanation with some detail | Use cause-effect links and one place-specific fact. |
| Level 3 | Detailed, balanced and evaluative | Weigh alternatives, use precise place detail and conclude. |
To move up a level, add a named place, a numerical fact and a short judgement. For example, instead of writing ‘some countries suffer more from earthquakes’, write ‘Haiti suffered over 200,000 deaths in 2010 because weak building codes increased vulnerability, so development level was a more important factor than magnitude alone’.
5. Building Case Study Answers |
Case studies are the backbone of high-scoring CCEA answers. You need at least one detailed example for each major theme, including physical and human topics. Examiners expect real places, not generic statements such as ‘a city in Asia’.
Use the PEEL structure to keep your case study answer focused. PEEL stands for Point, Evidence, Explanation and Link or evaluation. This structure helps you cover AO1, AO2 and AO3 in one paragraph and makes your answer easier for examiners to follow.
- Point: State the main idea or reason.
- Evidence: Add place-specific data, names and dates.
- Explanation: Explain why this matters or how it happens.
- Link/Evaluation: Connect back to the question or judge significance.
For a river flooding question, a strong PEEL answer might say: ‘The 2013 River Elbe flood affected Germany and the Czech Republic because prolonged heavy rainfall saturated the soil. This increased surface runoff into the river, and embankments failed in several settlements. Therefore, flood defences were not sufficient for a 1-in-100-year event.’
6. Place-Specific Reference and Detail |
Vague answers rarely move beyond Level 1. CCEA rewards precise place-specific reference because it proves you have studied real contexts rather than memorised general statements. Include country, city, region, date and a relevant statistic where possible.
For development topics, avoid saying ‘MEDCs are richer than LEDCs’. Instead write ‘Germany has a GNI per capita above USD 40,000, while Ethiopia remains below USD 1,000, so access to clean water and healthcare differs sharply’. This type of contrast shows both knowledge and understanding.
For physical geography, named processes and locations also matter. For example, refer to longshore drift at Holderness Coast or tectonic activity at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The more precise your reference, the more convincing your explanation becomes.
7. Data, Map and Graph Skills |
CCEA papers frequently include maps, graphs, photographs and data tables. You must show that you can read them accurately, describe patterns and use data to support your answers. Always quote numbers or labels from the resource rather than making general comments.
When describing a graph, identify the general trend, the highest and lowest values, and any anomalies. For example, write ‘The population rose steadily from 1.2 million in 1980 to 3.4 million in 2020, with a sharp decline in 2005 due to out-migration’.
If you need to calculate changes, use the correct formula and show your working. For percentage change:
Percentage change = (new value – old value) ÷ old value × 100
Map skills may include grid references, scale, direction and relief. For gradient, remember the relationship between vertical rise and horizontal distance:
Gradient = vertical rise ÷ horizontal distance
Always write the unit, such as metres, kilometres, percentages or people per square kilometre. A number without a unit can confuse the examiner and may not receive full credit.
8. Managing Time and Marks |
Use marks as a time guide. In CCEA Geography papers, each mark is roughly equal to one minute of writing, but short questions should take less time and extended questions more. If you spend ten minutes on a 2-mark question, you leave too little time for a 9-mark evaluation.
