📚 IGCSE CCEA Geography: Key Points for Practical / Fieldwork Assessment | IGCSE CCEA

Practical and fieldwork skills are central to CCEA Geography assessment. This article explains the key points you need to master, from enquiry design and data collection to presentation, analysis and evaluation.

1. Understanding the Fieldwork Enquiry Process |

A CCEA practical task follows a geographical enquiry route: identifying a question, collecting data, presenting results, analysing patterns and evaluating the whole process.

An enquiry is not just a field trip; it must be planned around testable aims and linked to specification themes such as rivers, coasts, urban land use or tourism.

  • Enquiry questions must be specific, geographical and answerable with evidence. |
  • Data should be collected systematically rather than described casually. |
  • Every stage should be recorded in a fieldwork log or report. |

2. Formulating Aims, Hypotheses and Key Questions |

A good enquiry starts with a clear aim, for example ‘To investigate how channel width changes downstream along a river’. The aim should state what you will study and where.

Hypotheses and key questions must be testable. A suitable hypothesis is ‘Channel width increases downstream’. Key questions can be ‘Does velocity increase with distance from the source?’ or ‘How does land use vary with distance from the town centre?’

Avoid vague aims such as ‘to look at the river’. Instead, link the aim to one or two geographical theories, for example the Bradshaw model or urban land use models.

Weak aim Strong aim
To look at tourism in a seaside town To investigate how environmental quality varies with distance from the tourist centre

3. Sampling Strategies in Data Collection |

You cannot measure every point in a study area, so sampling is used to select representative sites or people. The main strategies are random, systematic and stratified sampling.

Random sampling gives every member an equal chance of being selected, often using random number tables. Systematic sampling selects at a fixed interval, such as every 5 metres across a beach or every tenth person in a questionnaire.

Stratified sampling divides the population into groups, then samples within each group. This prevents over-representing one category, for example age groups in a survey.

  • State the sampling method used and justify why it was chosen. |
  • Record sample size and location clearly; larger samples usually improve reliability. |

4. Primary and Secondary Data Collection Methods |

Primary data is collected first-hand through fieldwork techniques such as questionnaires, measurements, observations and counts. It is directly relevant but can be time-consuming and affected by human error.

Secondary data is collected by others, including Ordnance Survey maps, census data, weather records, newspaper articles and online databases. It is quick to obtain but may be outdated or collected for a different purpose.

In a river enquiry, primary data might include channel width, depth and velocity measured with a tape measure, metre ruler and float. Secondary data could include flood risk maps from the environment agency.

Record data using clear recording sheets with units such as metres (m), metres per second (m s⁻¹), degrees (°) and percentages (%).

5. Health and Safety and Ethical Considerations |

Fieldwork risk assessments are part of the practical assessment. Identify potential hazards, such as fast-flowing water, uneven ground, traffic or adverse weather, and state control measures.

For example, when measuring a river, do not enter deep or fast-flowing water; work in pairs and carry a mobile phone. When working near roads, wear high-visibility clothing and avoid obstructing traffic.

Ethical considerations include gaining permission to access land, respecting privacy when taking photographs and explaining the purpose of questionnaires to participants. Never record personal details unless necessary.

  • Complete a risk assessment table with hazard, risk level and control measure. |
  • Mention ethics in your evaluation: how you protected participants and the environment. |

6. Data Presentation Techniques |

Once data is collected, you must present it in appropriate forms. The choice depends on data type: line graphs for continuous data, bar charts for categories, pie charts for proportions, scatter graphs for relationships.

Fieldwork reports should include a range of presentation methods, not only one type. Maps, annotated photographs and field sketches can support graphical data and show spatial patterns.

Use correct labels, titles, units and keys. A title must state what and where, for example ‘River velocity at three sites downstream from source’.

Data type Best presentation
Continuous change over distance Line graph
Categories, e.g. land use types Bar chart or pie chart
Relationship between two variables Scatter graph

7. Cartographic and Graphical Skills |

Practical assessment may ask you to complete or interpret maps and graphs. You should be able to draw sketch maps, add proportional symbols, use located bar charts and construct cross-sections.

Choropleth maps use shading to show density, such as population per square kilometre. A key must show the range of values, and boundaries should be clear. Proportional circles can show quantities at points.

Cross-sections require accurate plotting of height against distance. Use graph paper and a vertical exaggeration formula: vertical exaggeration = horizontal scale ÷ vertical scale.

Annotated photographs and field sketches should be labelled with geographical features, not just descriptive labels. For example, label ‘gentle concave slope’ instead of just ‘hill’.

8. Statistical Analysis and Interpretation |

Basic statistical techniques help you describe and compare data. The mean is the average, the median is the middle value, and the mode is the most frequent value. The range shows spread between maximum and minimum.

For example, if pebble sizes in mm are 20, 25, 30, 35, 80, the mean is 38 mm, the median is 30 mm, and the range is 80 − 20 = 60 mm. An outlier such as 80 can distort the mean.

Percentage change can be calculated as (new value − original value) ÷ original value × 100. This is useful when comparing two sites or years.

Interpretation means explaining what the statistics show about geographical processes. Do not just state ‘width increases’; explain why it increases, linking to erosion, discharge and channel efficiency.

9. Evaluation and Limitations |

Evaluation is about judging how reliable and valid your findings are. A reliable method gives consistent results when repeated; a valid method actually measures what it claims to measure.

Common limitations include small sample size, time constraints, equipment error, biased sampling or unexpected weather. You should explain how each limitation may have affected your results.

Suggest realistic improvements. For example, ‘collect data at more sites along the river’ or ‘repeat each velocity reading five times and use the mean’. This shows critical thinking.

  • Identify at least two limitations and link each to a specific improvement. |
  • Use phrases like ‘this may have reduced accuracy because…’ to explain impact. |

10. Reaching Conclusions and Making Judgements |

Your conclusion must answer the original aim and key questions. State whether the hypothesis is supported or rejected, and use evidence from the data to justify the judgement.

For example, ‘The hypothesis is supported because channel width increased from 2.4 m at Site 1 to 6.1 m at Site 5, which matches the Bradshaw model.’

You should also mention anomalies or data that do not fit the trend and suggest reasons, such as a tributary adding water or human modification of the channel.

Conclusions should be confident but not overstate certainty. Use words like ‘suggests’, ‘indicates’ and ‘partly supports’ rather than ‘proves’.

11. Exam-Style Practical Questions: Command Words |

Practical papers use command words to tell you how to answer. You must know the difference between describe, explain, compare, suggest, evaluate and justify.

你必须了解 describe(描述)、explain(解释)、compare(比较)、suggest(提出)、evaluate(评价)和 justify(论证)之间的区别。

  • Describe: say what the data or map shows, with reference to patterns and trends. |
  • Explain: give reasons or causes using geographical processes. |
  • Compare: identify similarities and differences. |
  • Evaluate: make a judgement about strengths, weaknesses and reliability. |
  • Justify: support a choice or decision with evidence. |

When a question says ‘Use evidence from Figure 1’, you must quote specific data, such as ‘velocity was 0.8 m s⁻¹ at Site A but 1.6 m s⁻¹ at Site B’.
