📚 IGCSE CCEA History: Formula and Theorem Quick Revision Handbook | IGCSE CCEA

History often feels like a subject of stories, dates and names, but exam success in CCEA IGCSE History depends on applying repeatable analytical ‘formulas’ to any topic.

This handbook collects the key formulas and theorems used by high-scoring students: cause and consequence, change and continuity, source utility, reliability, comparison, judgement and revision.

1. The Cause-Consequence Formula |

Long-term cause + Short-term cause + Trigger → Event → Intended result + Unintended result

In CCEA answers, you should never list causes in isolation. The formula forces you to link long-term pressures, short-term decisions and the immediate trigger before explaining consequences.

For example, the outbreak of the Second World War can be expressed as: Treaty of Versailles resentment (long-term) + appeasement and Nazi aggression (short-term) + invasion of Poland (trigger) → war in Europe → occupation, Holocaust and Cold War division (consequences).

  • Long-term cause: underlying pressure over many years; e.g. nationalism, imperial rivalry, economic depression.
  • Short-term cause: decision or crisis in weeks or months before the event; e.g. Hitler’s rearmament.
  • Trigger: the immediate spark; e.g. assassination, invasion, ultimatum.

2. The Change and Continuity Equation |

Change = (Scale × Pace) ÷ Resistance; Continuity = Persistence of institutions, beliefs or power

Historians ask what changed and what stayed the same. CCEA questions often say ‘How far did X change?’ which requires balanced judgement.

For example, the Nazi takeover in 1933 brought rapid political change: Reichstag Fire Decree, Enabling Act, banning of other parties. Yet there was continuity in elite support: army officers, industrialists and civil servants often remained in post.

Always use a ‘change thermometer’ in the margin: 0 = no change, 10 = total transformation. Place your topic on the scale before writing.

3. The Significance Theorem |

Significance = Remarkable + Remembered + Resonant + Resulting change + Revealing

CCEA mark schemes reward students who explain why an event or person was significant rather than merely describing it. Use the five Rs as a checklist.

  • Remarkable: was it unusual or shocking at the time?
  • Remarkable(非凡):当时是否不同寻常或令人震惊?
  • Remembered: did people commemorate or memorialise it?
  • Remembered(被铭记):人们是否纪念或记住它?
  • Resonant: did it influence later generations?
  • Resonant(产生共鸣):是否影响了后代?
  • Resulting change: did it lead to legal, social or political change?
  • Revealing: does it reveal attitudes or conditions of the period?
  • Revealing(揭示):是否揭示了当时的态度或状况?

4. The Source Utility Formula |

Utility = Content + Provenance + Context; Provenance = Nature + Origin + Purpose (NOP)

A CCEA source question such as ‘How useful is Source A to a historian studying…’ should never be answered with just reliable/unreliable. Utility means what the source can tell us, even if biased.

For example, a Nazi propaganda poster is unreliable about unemployment statistics, but highly useful as evidence of Nazi methods of control.

Nature What type of source is it? e.g. speech, diary, cartoon, official report
Origin Who made it, when and where?
Purpose Why was it made? To inform, persuade, justify, mock?

5. The Reliability Formula |

Reliability = Accuracy × Corroboration − Bias

Reliability asks how far the source can be trusted to give an accurate account. A source can be reliable for one question and unreliable for another.

Check accuracy by comparing the source with your own knowledge. Check corroboration by comparing it with other sources. Then subtract the distortion caused by bias, selective memory or propaganda.

Example: an eyewitness account of Kristallnacht may be accurate in describing violence but unreliable in estimating nationwide numbers, because the witness saw only one city.

6. The Comparison Theorem |

Comparison = Point of similarity + Point of difference + Evidence from both items

When a CCEA question asks you to compare two sources or interpretations, make direct comparisons rather than separate descriptions.

Use comparative language: ‘whereas Source A claims…, Source B claims…’. Always support each similarity or difference with quotation or reference.
