📚 IGCSE CCEA History: Unit Test Mock Paper Walkthrough | IGCSE CCEA
This walkthrough explains how to approach a CCEA History unit test, from question types and command words to source analysis and judgement essays. Use it with a mock paper to diagnose gaps before the real exam.
1. CCEA History Unit Test at a Glance | CCEA
A CCEA History unit test usually combines knowledge questions, source-based questions, and one extended judgement task. The exact topics depend on the option your school has chosen, such as Germany 1918-1939, the Cold War, or Northern Ireland since 1965.
Mock papers are not just memory checks. They test whether you can select evidence, explain causation and consequence, and reach a supported conclusion under time pressure.
Successful answers use specific factual detail rather than vague phrases such as ‘many people were angry’ or ‘the situation got worse’. Examiners want dates, laws, statistics, names and precise terminology.
2. Paper Structure and Assessment Objectives |
Most CCEA History unit papers are divided into Source Handling and Structured or Essay questions. The balance varies by unit, but the skills tested remain similar across all options.
| Assessment Objective | 评估目标 | What it tests | 考查内容 |
|---|---|
| AO1 Knowledge and understanding | 知识与理解 | Recall, describe and explain key events, ideas and concepts | 记忆、描述并解释关键事件、思想与概念 |
| AO2 Source analysis | 材料分析 | Interpret, evaluate and compare primary and secondary sources | 解读、评价并比较一手与二手材料 |
| AO3 Judgement | 判断与论证 | Reach supported conclusions about causation, consequence or significance | 对原因、后果或重要性形成有依据的结论 |
When you first open the paper, read the instructions carefully. Identify which sections require source work and which require extended writing, then plan your time before you start writing.
3. Command Words: Answering Exactly What Is Asked |
Give precise factual points without long explanation.
Show how or why something happened; link causes to outcomes.
- Use Source A and your own knowledge | 运用材料 A 与你自己的知识: Combine source content with contextual facts.
- How useful is Source B | 材料 B 有多大用处: Judge usefulness for a specific enquiry, not in general.
- How far do you agree | 你在多大程度上同意: Present both sides before reaching a conclusion.
Misreading command words is one of the most common reasons capable students lose marks. A question that says ‘explain two consequences’ needs two developed consequences, not a list of ten events.
Underline the command word and the focus of the question before you answer. This keeps your response relevant and prevents you from drifting into a general narrative.
4. Source Analysis: Utility, Reliability and Context |
When a question asks how useful a source is, do not simply say it is reliable or biased. Explain what it reveals, what it omits, and how its provenance affects its value.
A useful structure is: identify the source type and author, explain what it suggests, link to your own knowledge, and then note one limitation or contrasting source.
Provenance means origin: who produced the source, when, where and for what purpose. A government report and a private diary can both be useful, but for different reasons.
Always link utility to the specific question. For example, a Nazi propaganda poster from 1933 is useful for studying how the regime wanted to be seen, but it is less useful for showing what ordinary Germans privately believed.
5. Sample Question 1: How Useful Is Source A?
Sample question: ‘How useful is Source A for an historian studying the impact of the Berlin Blockade?’
Model approach: first state what Source A shows, for example an American newspaper cartoon of the airlift. Then explain that as propaganda it is useful for studying Western attitudes, but less useful for measuring Soviet motives or the scale of suffering in Berlin.
Use a paragraph such as: ‘Source A is useful because it shows the airlift as a heroic success. However, its origin as an American cartoon means it may exaggerate Western unity. I know from my own study that the blockade also caused severe food shortages, which the cartoon does not show.’
The strongest answers give a balanced judgement and use specific own knowledge to support the evaluation. Avoid writing general sentences such as ‘Source A is useful because it is from the time.’
6. Sample Question 2: Explain the Consequences |
Sample question: ‘Explain two consequences of the Reichstag Fire in February 1933.’
For each consequence, state it clearly in the first sentence, then develop it with specific factual support. For example, one consequence was the Reichstag Fire Decree, which suspended civil liberties. A second was the strengthening of Nazi control over the police and courts.
Avoid confusing consequence with cause. The examiner does not want a story of the fire; they want what happened because of the fire. The fire itself was the event, while the decree and the Enabling Act were consequences.
A developed paragraph might say: ‘One consequence was the Reichstag Fire Decree, passed on 28 February 1933. It removed freedom of speech, press and assembly, and allowed the police to detain opponents without trial. This meant Hitler could crush the Communist Party before the March election.’
For top marks, link the consequences together. The decree was a legal consequence, while the Enabling Act of March 1933 was a further political consequence that allowed Hitler to rule without the Reichstag.
7. Sample Question 3: How Far Do You Agree? |
Sample question: ‘The main reason Hitler became Chancellor in 1933 was the Great Depression.’ How far do you agree?
Plan: agree with the depression point by explaining mass unemployment, Nazi votes rising to 37% in July 1932, and fear of communism. Then disagree by adding other factors: political intrigue, the role of Papen and Hindenburg, and the weaknesses of the Weimar constitution.
Conclude with a supported judgement, e.g. the depression was necessary but not sufficient; backroom deals made it possible in January 1933.
A strong essay structure is: introduction with a clear line of argument, one or two paragraphs agreeing, one or two paragraphs disagreeing, and a conclusion that weighs the factors.
Do not simply list reasons for and against. Develop each factor with evidence, then explain how important it was compared with the other causes.
8. Mark Scheme and Common Errors |
Mark schemes reward relevant, specific knowledge and developed explanation, not everything you can remember. The most common errors are:
- Narrative answers that tell the story but rarely explain why it matters. |
- Ignoring provenance in source questions. |
- Uneven judgement essays that only give one side. |
- Missing time markers such as ‘after’, ‘because’, ‘led to’.
- Using quotations from
