1. What is Philosophy? |
Philosophy literally means “love of wisdom”. It uses reason, questioning and conceptual analysis to investigate fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, morality, meaning and value. Unlike science, it does not rely on experiments alone; unlike religion, it does not appeal to revelation as its final authority.
In CCEA Philosophy, you need to define key terms accurately, explain arguments step by step, and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses. Philosophers often use thought experiments, logical reasoning and counterexamples to test ideas.
2. Branches of Philosophy |
Metaphysics studies the ultimate nature of reality, including time, space, causation, mind and God. It asks what ultimately exists and what it is like.
Epistemology is the theory of knowledge: what knowledge is, where it comes from, and how beliefs are justified.
Ethics, or moral philosophy, examines right and wrong, good and bad, and how we ought to live. Logic studies the rules of valid reasoning and argument structure.
Aesthetics deals with beauty, art and taste, while political philosophy examines justice, authority, rights and the ideal state.
3. Logic and Argumentation |
An argument is a set of premises intended to support a conclusion. A deductive argument is valid if the conclusion must be true when the premises are true; it is sound if it is valid and all premises are actually true. Inductive arguments make the conclusion probable rather than certain.
Two common valid forms are modus ponens and modus tollens. Common fallacies include ad hominem, straw man, and circular reasoning, which weaken arguments even when the conclusion may be true.
Modus ponens: If P → Q; P; ∴ Q.
Modus tollens: If P → Q; not Q; ∴ not P.
4. Epistemology: Knowledge and Justification |
Epistemology asks what knowledge is and how we can acquire it. The traditional analysis defines knowledge as justified true belief (JTB), but Gettier cases show that a person can have a justified true belief by luck and yet not know.
Rationalism argues that reason is the primary source of knowledge, with Descartes and Plato as key figures. Empiricism argues that sense experience is primary, as held by Locke and Hume. The debate focuses on whether innate ideas exist and how much we can know beyond experience.
5. Metaphysics: Mind and Body |
Substance dualism claims that mind and body are distinct substances: the mind is non-physical and can exist after death. Descartes’s famous claim “I think, therefore I am” supports the idea that the self is a thinking thing.
Physicalism, by contrast, claims that mental states are identical to or depend on physical states. Property dualism accepts that the world is made of one substance but argues mental properties are not reducible to physical ones. Key problems include mental causation, qualia, and personal identity over time.
6. Philosophy of Religion: Arguments for God |
The teleological (design) argument observes order, purpose and complexity in the universe and concludes there is a designer. The cosmological argument argues that since everything has a cause, the universe must have a first cause, often identified as God.
The ontological argument claims that God, as the greatest conceivable being, must exist, because existence is a perfection. The moral argument links objective moral law to a divine lawgiver. Critics such as Hume and Kant challenge the design and ontological arguments, but these remain central exam material.
