📚 IGCSE CCEA Politics: Summer Preview and Bridging Course | IGCSE CCEA

Welcome to your IGCSE CCEA Government and Politics summer bridging course. This guide is designed to help you build a strong foundation before you enter the classroom in September. You do not need any prior knowledge of politics; you only need curiosity about how decisions are made and how power is shared.

1. Why Study Government and Politics? |

Politics is not just about politicians in television debates. It is the process by which groups make collective decisions, allocate resources and resolve conflicts. Studying Government and Politics helps you understand who exercises power, why citizens obey laws, and how different systems hold leaders accountable.

For CCEA students, the subject also has a local dimension. Northern Ireland provides a living case study of power-sharing, devolution and the transition from conflict to stable democratic institutions. This makes the course both intellectually rich and directly relevant to your community.

2. Understanding the CCEA Specification | 了解 CCEA 考试大纲

The CCEA GCSE Government and Politics specification is organised around two broad themes: how democracy works in the United Kingdom, and how the United Kingdom relates to the wider world. Topics typically include political parties, elections, the role of Parliament, the courts, human rights, and international organisations.

CCEA GCSE

During the summer, you should download the specification from the CCEA website and highlight the command words such as “describe”, “explain”, “analyse” and “evaluate”. These words tell you the depth of response expected in exam questions.

Many students find it helpful to create a simple topic checklist. Tick off each section after you have read one short article or watched one news report on that topic.

3. Key Concepts: Power, Authority and Legitimacy |

Power is the ability to make someone do something they would not otherwise do. Authority is the recognised right to exercise power. Legitimacy is the acceptance by the people that a ruler or government has the right to govern.

A government can hold power through force, but it becomes stable only when citizens regard its authority as legitimate. In a democracy, legitimacy usually comes from free and fair elections, the rule of law and respect for human rights.

Power + Legitimacy → Stable Authority |

4. Democracy and Participation |

Democracy means “rule by the people”. In a direct democracy, citizens vote on every major decision. In a representative democracy, citizens elect representatives to make decisions on their behalf. The UK is a representative democracy with some direct elements, such as referendums.

Political participation includes voting, joining a party, signing petitions, protesting peacefully, contacting an elected representative, or standing for office. Low turnout at elections is often seen as a sign of democratic dissatisfaction, but it may also reflect contentment or barriers to voting.

As you prepare over the summer, keep a “participation diary” for one week. Record every political message you see, from posters to social media campaigns, and ask who produced it and why.

5. Elections and Voting Systems |

Elections translate public preferences into seats and offices. The main voting systems you need to know include First Past the Post (FPTP), Proportional Representation (PR), the Single Transferable Vote (STV) and the Additional Member System (AMS). Northern Ireland uses STV for Assembly elections.

A useful way to compare systems is to ask three questions: Does it produce a strong single-party government? Does it deliver proportional outcomes? Does it give voters a choice between candidates as well as parties?

System Key feature Used for
FPTP Most votes wins in each constituency UK general elections
STV Voters rank candidates; multi-member constituencies Northern Ireland Assembly
AMS Combines constituency and list seats Scottish Parliament, Welsh Senedd

6. The UK Parliament and Government |

The UK Parliament has two chambers: the House of Commons, whose members are elected, and the House of Lords, whose members are mostly appointed. The government is formed by the party or coalition that can command a majority in the House of Commons.

Key roles include the Prime Minister, the Cabinet, backbench MPs, the Speaker, select committees and the official opposition. The principle of parliamentary sovereignty means that Parliament can make or repeal any law, although in practice powers are shared with devolved bodies and constrained by international agreements.

For CCEA, make sure you can explain the difference between Parliament and government. Parliament scrutinises and passes laws; the government initiates policy and runs the state. Confusing the two is one of the most common errors in exams.

7. Northern Ireland Politics |

Northern Ireland has a devolved legislature at Stormont. The Good Friday Agreement of 1998 established a power-sharing executive in which unionist and nationalist parties must work together. The First Minister and deputy First Minister hold joint office, and key decisions require cross-community support.

This makes Northern Ireland a distinctive case study in consociational democracy, a system designed to manage deeply divided societies. You should be able to link this to concepts such as legitimacy, compromise, minority rights and the rule of law.

Over the summer, read one simple news article about the Northern Ireland Assembly and highlight any references to power-sharing, budgets or cross-community votes. This habit will build exam-ready vocabulary.

8. International Relations and Global Governance |

The second major theme in CCEA Government and Politics examines relations between states. You may study the United Nations, the European Union, NATO, the role of the Secretary-General, and concepts such as sovereignty, humanitarian intervention and globalisation.

A key tension in international politics is between state sovereignty and the responsibility to protect civilians. When a government abuses its own people, can outside states intervene? Different theories offer different answers.

Use the five permanent members of the UN Security Council as a starting point. Ask why they hold veto power, and what this reveals about the balance of power after the Second World War.

9. How to Read Political Sources |

Exam questions often provide a source such as a newspaper extract, a chart or a political cartoon. You are asked to identify the message, explain the evidence and evaluate the reliability or usefulness of the source.

A useful method is to ask: Who produced the source? When? What is the main message? What is left out? Does the source contain fact, opinion or a mixture? These questions prevent you from simply summarising the text.

Practice with one political cartoon per week during the summer. Write three sentences: the message, the evidence, and a question about reliability. This is a quick habit that improves source analysis.

10. Summer Study Plan and Assessment Tips |

Create a realistic weekly plan rather than trying to learn everything in the final week. For example, spend two sessions on key concepts, two on UK politics, two on Northern Ireland, and two on international relations. Each session should include reading, note-taking and a short recall quiz.

Use active recall: after reading a page, close the book and write down three things you remember. Then check your notes. This is far more effective than highlighting alone.

Finally, practise writing exam-style paragraphs using the structure PEEL: Point, Evidence, Explanation and Link. Even a short paragraph written every other day will improve your confidence
