📚 IGCSE WJEC Geography: Fieldwork and Practical Assessment Key Points | IGCSE WJEC

Practical work in WJEC geography is not simply about collecting data; it is a staged enquiry that tests your ability to design, implement, analyse and evaluate a geographical investigation. This revision guide summarises the key assessment points for fieldwork and practical skills, from hypotheses to final conclusions.

1. Understanding the Enquiry Process |

Every WJEC practical investigation follows a logical sequence: identify a question, collect data, present data, analyse patterns, and then evaluate the whole enquiry. Examiners reward answers that recognise this sequence and use geographical terminology accurately.

The enquiry process can be remembered as “question, method, data, presentation, analysis, conclusion, evaluation”. You should be able to justify each stage rather than simply describe what was done.

2. Formulating Aims and Hypotheses |

An aim is a clear statement of what the enquiry sets out to achieve, for example: “To investigate how channel width changes downstream along the River Taff.” It should be specific and linked to a key geographical concept or theory.

A hypothesis is a testable prediction, such as: “Channel width increases with distance downstream because discharge and erosion increase.” A null hypothesis states there is no relationship, and your data may either support or reject it.

3. Choosing Locations and Sampling Strategies |

Choosing appropriate sites is essential. Sampling reduces the amount of data you need while aiming to make the sample representative of the wider area. The three main strategies are random, systematic and stratified sampling.

Random sampling uses chance to avoid bias; systematic sampling collects data at regular intervals, such as every 10 metres along a transect; stratified sampling divides the study area into subgroups and samples proportionally from each. Be ready to justify why one method suits a river, beach or urban study.

4. Primary and Secondary Data Collection |

Primary data are collected first-hand through fieldwork, such as measuring pebble size, recording land use or carrying out questionnaires. Secondary data come from existing sources, including maps, census data, weather records or published reports.

Quantitative data are numerical and can be analysed statistically, while qualitative data are descriptive, such as photographs, opinions and land use classifications. WJEC questions often ask you to compare the strengths and weaknesses of primary versus secondary data.

5. Fieldwork Techniques and Equipment |

Common physical geography techniques include measuring river velocity with a flowmeter, recording channel depth and width with a tape measure, and using a clinometer to measure slope angle. Beach studies may use callipers for pebble size and a ranging pole to record beach profiles.

Human geography techniques include questionnaires, pedestrian counts, land use mapping, environmental quality surveys and bipolar scoring. Always record units clearly and repeat measurements where possible to improve reliability.

6. Health, Safety and Ethical Considerations |

Before fieldwork, you must complete a risk assessment that identifies hazards, who might be affected, existing controls and further actions. Hazards may include fast-flowing water, tides, traffic, uneven ground, poor weather or strangers during questionnaires.

Ethical considerations include obtaining informed consent before interviews, respecting privacy, avoiding damage to fragile environments, and ensuring data are stored securely. WJEC marks can be awarded for explaining how you minimised risk and bias.

7. Data Presentation Skills |

Choosing the correct presentation method is a common assessment point. Use line graphs for continuous data over distance or time, bar charts for categories, pie charts for proportions, scatter graphs for relationships, and histograms for frequency distributions.

Maps such as proportional symbol maps or choropleth maps show spatial patterns, while annotated photographs and field sketches record qualitative evidence. Always label axes, include units, add a title, and use a key where appropriate.

Data type Suitable presentation
River depth along a transect Line graph or cross-section
Land use categories Bar chart or pie chart
Relationship between velocity and load size Scatter graph with best-fit line

8. Analysing and Interpreting Results |

Analysis means identifying patterns, trends and anomalies rather than simply listing numbers. Use descriptive statistics such as mean, median, mode and range, and refer to interquartile range if you have spread data.

When describing a scatter graph, comment on direction, strength and outliers: for example, “there is a weak positive correlation between pebble size and distance from the cliff, but one anomalous result at 30 m breaks the trend.”

Always link patterns back to geographical processes, such as attrition reducing pebble size, hydraulic action widening a channel, or urbanisation increasing pedestrian flow.

9. Reaching Conclusions and Evaluating Limitations |

A conclusion must directly answer the aim or accept/reject the hypothesis. Avoid vague statements; say whether the data support the hypothesis and quote example figures as evidence.
