📚 IGCSE WJEC History: Formulas and Theorems Quick Reference Handbook | IGCSE WJEC

Revision in IGCSE WJEC History is often seen as memorising dates and names, but examiners are really testing whether candidates can build arguments, weigh causes, evaluate sources and compare interpretations. The ‘formulas’ in this handbook are not mathematical equations but analytical frameworks that turn knowledge into marks. They are designed to help you structure answers under time pressure and meet the WJEC assessment objectives with precision.

1. The Core Argument Formula |

Every high-level answer in WJEC History is built from the same fundamental pattern: a claim must be supported by evidence and then explained with reasoning. Examiners reward answers that go beyond description by linking ‘what happened’ to ‘why it matters’.

Argument = Claim + Evidence + Reasoning (A = C + E + R)

Example: In an essay on the Weimar Republic, avoid writing ‘The Treaty of Versailles caused problems.’ Instead write: ‘The Treaty of Versailles weakened the Weimar Republic because Article 231 forced Germany to accept full war guilt, which nationalist parties used to attack the new democracy.’

  • Claim: a clear judgement that answers the question, not a fact.
  • Evidence: specific names, dates, clauses, statistics.
  • Reasoning: a ‘because’ or ‘therefore’ link that shows consequence.

2. Causation Theorem |

WJEC questions often ask ‘Why did an event happen?’ The strongest answers do not list causes randomly; they classify causes by type and then weigh their importance. The causation theorem helps you produce a structured analytical response.

Cause = Trigger + Preconditions + Catalyst

Multiple Causation = Long-term + Short-term + Trigger Event

Example: The rise of the Nazi Party can be explained through long-term humiliation after the Treaty of Versailles, medium-term economic instability from 1923, the short-term crisis of the 1929 Great Depression, and the trigger of Hitler’s appointment as Chancellor in January 1933.

Long-term / 长期 Underlying conditions over decades / 持续数十年的根本条件 German resentment after 1919 / 1919 年后德国的怨恨
Short-term / 短期 Immediate pressures in months or years before / 事件发生前数月或数年的直接压力 Wall Street Crash 1929 / 1929 年华尔街股灾
Trigger / 触发 The spark that sets off change / 引发变化的导火索 Hindenburg appoints Hitler / 兴登堡任命希特勒

3. Change and Continuity Formula |

History is not only about change; it is also about what stayed the same. WJEC questions may ask ‘How much did X change?’ or ‘To what extent did society stay the same?’ Use this formula to cover both sides of the question.

Historical Change = Pace + Direction + Scale + Continuity

Example: During the Industrial Revolution, production methods changed rapidly, work locations shifted from home to factory, and urban populations grew. However, social hierarchy continued, with large gaps between owners and workers, and many rural customs persisted for decades.

  • Pace: was change fast or gradual?
  • Direction: did things improve or worsen for different groups?
  • Scale: was change widespread or limited?
  • Continuity: what stayed the same and why?

4. Significance Formula |

Significance is a common WJEC command word. It does not simply mean ‘what happened next’; it means impact, depth, duration and later memory. The formula below turns a vague judgement into a measurable one.

Significance = Impact × Duration × Depth × Remembered

Example: The 1832 Reform Act was significant because it gave the vote to more middle-class men in Britain, set a precedent for future reform, reduced some rotten boroughs, and was remembered as a turning point in parliamentary democracy. However, its immediate impact was limited because most working men still could not vote.

How many people or nations were affected?
Did it last weeks, years or generations?
Did it change politics, society, economy or culture?
Is it still studied or commemorated today?

5. Source Evaluation Theorem |

Source questions in WJEC require more than saying a source is ‘biased’. You must show how the nature, origin and purpose shape its value and limitations for a specific enquiry. This theorem provides a repeatable method.

Source Value = Nature + Origin + Purpose − Limitations

Example: A Nazi propaganda poster from 1936 is useful as evidence of the regime’s messages and methods, but it is limited as evidence of what ordinary Germans actually believed. The nature (poster), origin (Nazi Ministry of Propaganda) and purpose (to persuade) must all be connected to the question.

NOP Questions to Ask /
What type of source is it: diary, speech, photo, cartoon?
Who made it, when and where?
Why was it produced and for which audience?

6. Interpretations Analysis Formula |

WJEC tests your ability to explain why historians disagree. An interpretation is not simply right or wrong; it is shaped by the author’s context, the evidence chosen, and what is emphasised or omitted.

Interpretation = Author Context + Evidence Used + Emphasis/Omission

Example: On the origins of the Cold War, traditional historians often emphasised Soviet expansion and the need for containment, while revisionist historians stressed American economic interests and the fear of communist revolution. Both used different evidence and gave different weight to the same events.

  • Author context: when and where did the historian write?
  • Evidence used: which sources or facts were selected?
  • Emphasis/Omission: what is highlighted and what is left out?

7. Essay Structure Formula |

A WJEC essay is not a memory dump. Use this structure to show analysis, balance and judgement. Each body paragraph should follow PEEL: Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link.

Essay = Introduction + PEEL × 3 + Judgement

Example question: ‘How far was the Treaty of Versailles the main cause of the Second World War?’

  • Introduction: define key terms, state your line of argument.
  • P1: Treaty of Versailles created resentment and economic strain.
  • P2: Great Depression of 1929 destabilised Weimar democracy.
  • P3: Appeasement and Hitler’s aggression enabled war.
  • Judgement: Versailles was important but not sufficient alone; depression and policy choices were also necessary conditions.

8. Chronology Theorem |

Dates are not just for memorising; they create context and reveal turning points. WJEC examiners want you to place events in sequence and explain how one event created the conditions for the next.

Chronology = Sequence + Context + Turning Points

Example: Germany 1918-1933 can be understood through key turning points: the 1918 revolution ended the monarchy, the 1919 Treaty of Versailles imposed humiliation, the 1923 hyperinflation destroyed savings, the
