📚 IGCSE WJEC Media: Case Study Analysis in Action | IGCSE WJEC

Case study analysis is the core skill in IGCSE WJEC Media Studies. Examiners do not simply want you to recall theories or describe a text; they want you to use a case study as evidence to support a critical argument. This article walks through a practical, exam-focused method for analysing media products, from deconstructing media language to evaluating representation, audience and institution. You will also see two worked examples and a model paragraph.

1. Why Case Study Analysis Matters |

In WJEC Media Studies, a strong answer always moves from description to analysis. A case study is not an add-on; it is the evidence base for every point you make. If you write that a magazine cover ‘targets teenage girls’, you must prove it by referring to specific choices such as colour palette, typography, cover lines and the celebrity image. Examiners reward answers that connect intention, technique and effect.

Case studies also help you think synoptically. One media product can be discussed through representation, audience pleasure, genre conventions and regulatory issues. That is why revision should not be organised by theory alone; you should organise it around real texts you can use flexibly in different exam questions.

2. Start with the Brief: What Are You Being Asked? |

Before choosing or applying a case study, underline the command word and key concepts. ‘Analyse’ means break down how meaning is made. ‘Evaluate’ means weigh strengths, weaknesses or the usefulness of a theory. ‘Compare’ means identify significant similarities and differences. If the question asks about representation, do not drift into a long history of the product.

A useful habit is to turn the question into a mini-thesis. For example, ‘How are gender roles represented in this film poster?’ becomes ‘The poster constructs a conventional masculine hero through low-angle framing, dark costume and action props, while the female figure is placed as a helper through composition and lighting.’ This sharpens your case study evidence.

3. Media Language: The Building Blocks |

Media language includes camera, editing, sound, mise-en-scène and for print, layout and typography. Use accurate terms: close-up, low-angle shot, jump cut, diegetic sound, low-key lighting, sans-serif font. Never just list techniques. For each one, state what it shows and why that choice matters.

  • Camera: framing, angle, movement /
  • Editing: pace, transitions, continuity /
  • Sound: diegetic, non-diegetic, sound bridge /
  • Mise-en-scène: setting, costume, lighting, props /
  • Print: layout, typography, colour, image /

In an exam, selecting three or four precise observations is far better than listing ten techniques with no meaning attached. Quality of analysis always outweighs quantity of terminology.

4. Representation: Who, How and Why? |

Representation is not the same as reality. It is a construction made by selecting and combining signs. When analysing a case study, ask three questions: who or what is represented? How are they represented through media language? Why has this representation been constructed, and what values does it reinforce or challenge?

Look for stereotypes, countertypes and absent groups. A teen drama may represent young people as rebellious through costume and soundtrack, or it may challenge that stereotype by making them academically driven. Ideology often hides in ‘common sense’ images, so question what seems natural.

5. Audience: Targeting, Positioning and Response |

WJEC questions often ask how a text targets or positions its audience. Define the target audience using demographic factors such as age, gender and income, and psychographic factors such as values, interests and lifestyle. Then explain how technical and symbolic codes encourage a preferred reading.
