IGCSE WJEC Media Studies: Exam Technique and Mark Schemes | IGCSE WJEC

📚 IGCSE WJEC Media Studies: Exam Technique and Mark Schemes | IGCSE WJEC

Success in WJEC Media Studies depends on more than memorising set products; examiners reward precise use of media terminology, clear application of theoretical frameworks, and confident evaluation. This guide explains how to interpret command words, hit every assessment objective, and structure responses that reach the top mark band.

1. Know Your Exam Components |

The WJEC Media Studies qualification is usually divided into three components: a written exam on exploring the media, a written exam on understanding media forms and products, and a non-exam assessment (NEA) where you create a media product. Check your specification for the exact weighting, because marks are distributed unevenly across analysis and production.

Before you begin revising, make a one-page summary of each component, including time allowed, total marks, question styles, and which set products appear. This prevents last-minute confusion and helps you target the right skills.

2. Assessment Objectives and Weightings |

WJEC Media Studies uses four assessment objectives. AO1 asks you to recall knowledge and understanding of media language, representation, audience, and industry. AO2 rewards applying this knowledge to close study products. AO3 requires analysis and evaluation, and AO4 covers practical production skills in the NEA.

Use the table below as a revision map. If a question is worth 10 marks, more than half of those marks may be for analysis and evaluation, not description. Therefore, every paragraph must do more than say what is on screen.

Assessment Objective What it means Typical marks
AO1 Recall and show knowledge Low-medium
AO2 Apply knowledge to set products Medium
AO3 Analyse and evaluate High
AO4 Create media products NEA only

Note: AO4 is only assessed in the production component, so written exam answers should focus on AO1-AO3. Do not waste exam time describing how you would make a product unless the question specifically asks for production planning.

3. Command Words: What They Want |

Command words tell you the level of thinking required. ‘Identify’ and ‘name’ need only a short, accurate answer. ‘Explain’ requires reasons, ‘analyse’ requires breaking down how meaning is made, and ‘evaluate’ requires a judgement that weighs strengths, weaknesses, or different views.

A common mistake is to treat ‘analyse’ as ‘describe’. For example, saying ‘the poster uses red’ is description. Saying ‘the poster uses red to connote danger, which positions the audience to feel urgency’ is analysis because it links a technique to meaning and effect.

Before writing, underline the command word and the focus of the question. If the question says ‘evaluate’, plan at least one counterpoint or alternative interpretation to show critical judgement.

4. Building a Top-Band Paragraph |

High-scoring paragraphs tend to follow a clear structure: point, evidence, terminology, analysis, and link back to the question. You can remember this as PEAL or PETAL: Point, Evidence, Technique/Terminology, Analysis, Link.

Start with a point that directly answers the question: ‘The front cover constructs a rebellious youth identity through visual codes.’ Then add precise evidence from the set product, such as camera angle, colour palette, or typography.

Finish by explaining the effect on the audience and linking back to the question focus. This final step is where many candidates lose marks, so always ask yourself: ‘So what? How does this answer the question?’

5. Using Media Language Terminology |

Examiners expect precise media language: ‘low-angle shot’ rather than ‘camera from below’, ‘sans-serif typography’ rather than ‘plain writing’, and ‘diegetic sound’ rather than ‘background noise’. Accurate terminology signals AO1 knowledge and gives your analysis credibility.

Build a terminology bank under the five key areas: media language, representation, audience, industry, and context. For each term, write a definition and one example from a set product. This turns passive recognition into active use.

Do not use a term if you are unsure of its meaning. A precise description is better than a misused technical word, and examiners are trained to spot ‘terminology dumping’ that does not advance the answer.

6. Representation: Move from Description to Evaluation |

Representation questions ask how media products portray people, places, events, or ideas. Strong answers do not just list what is shown; they explain how choices in media language construct a particular version of reality, and they consider whether this reinforces or challenges stereotypes.
